History:
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) - BTS) - The Australian born
mutant known only as Buckland found his mutation made it impossible to
safely live among humans.
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Buckland found his way to a group of
visibly different mutants that formed their own community in the
Outback. Calling this remote settlement Never Never, it was concealed
from humanity by Mirror Seer's mirage generating powers. There, he met
and fell in love with Bushranger, the group's leader.
(X-Men: Outback I#4 (fb) - King Basallo and his forces
penetrated the refuge from below and abducted Buckland and the other
residents. The Lava Men intended to harvest and refine their mutant
genes and use them to strengthen their own kind. Bushranger managed to
escape and went looking for help.
(X-Men: Outback I#4) - Bushranger remained free and recruited the X-Men to rescue her people. After the X-Men and Bushranger forced Basallo to release his prisoners, Buckland returned to Never Never. He greeted Bushranger affectionately, and she introduced him to Havok and Madelyne Pryor as her long-time companion. This led to some confusion with Pryor who felt Bushranger was actually coming on to her own love interest Havok. However, seeing the visually very different Buckland treated as a lust object He was present as Bushranger thanked Pryor and the X-Men and promised that her people would protect the secret of the X-Men's survival.
Comments: Created by Steve Orlando, Roi Mercado.
X-Men: Outback I#4 is set during the X-Men's time
in Australia, before the events of Inferno. It's hard to tell if
Buckland or any of the other Australian Morlocks are still around after
all this time, especially given the myriad M-Day style extinction events
that have occurred since then. If he did wind up depowered, you wonder
what he would look like. Presumably, a lot more conventional than his
mutant form which appears to be part frog, part man with some
hand-mouths for talking, eating and kissing... Quite a look. You wonder
what Bushranger ever saw in him, it's almost enough to make you believe
he can mentally sway or dominate people to fall for him (then again, if
he had that kind of ability, he never would have had to go live in Never
Never).
