History:
(Misty#1 (fb) - BTS) - As with many of the teen-aged girls
at Shady Hollow High School, Shirelle Brown had prepared a performance
to win the Ms. Heaventeen Talent Contest to be held at the school.
(Misty#1) - Shirelle met her friends Spike and Misty, and
compared ideas for the contest. Shirelle and Spike watched as Misty's
rival Darlene dismissed Misty's warning that she was leaning on wet
paint. That night, Shirelle performed a dance number from The
Wiz musical; however, it was Misty who won for her Shakespeare
soliloquy.
(Misty#2/1) - Shirelle noted to Spike that Misty had been
busy with the TV show acting role that was part of the Ms. Heaventeen
contest prize. Spike grumpily wondered if Misty thought the TV show was
more important than her friends, but Shirelle saw Misty more positively.
However, Misty's rival Darlene deliberately misled the friends, steering
them away from Misty. Misty missed lunch with her pals and an evening
phone chat (as she was helping troubled new student Jane
Rosen). Shirelle tried to calm Spike and the next day the pair saw
Jane thank Misty, and the misunderstanding was quietly resolved.
(Misty#2/2) - Alongside Misty, Shirelle volunteered to
help the Shady Hollow Library with their Halloween afternoon program for
children. Later that night, Shirelle (dressed as a planet), Misty, Spike
and the other students enjoyed a costume party at the school gym up to
midnight. Shirelle wondered where Darlene was (the rival actually
waylaid from a prank against Misty that backfired).
(Misty#2/3) - Confusion over modern slang terms allowed
Misty to secretly criticize Darlene's overly dramatic performance during
auditions for roles in a school production of West
Side Story.
(Misty#3/2) - After a chatty school-night get-together
before Christmas at Misty's, Spike and Shirelle walked home but
deliberately took a longer route to avoid a would-be haunted house where
the elderly Amelia Calhoun lived. But on Saturday, an incorrectly
delivered envelope saw Misty take responsibility to hand deliver the
letter. Despite her two friends emphasizing the place's supposed haunted
nature, Misty went ahead and found the door open. Calhoun lay on the
floor unconscious so the girls took her to her bedroom and nursed her
back to health. Calhoun admitted she also thought the house was haunted,
but the girls discovered it was only a small family of raccoons. The
letter was from Calhoun's grandson who soon arrived, and Misty's family,
friends and newfound friends enjoyed a Christmas gathering.
(Misty#5/1) - In the school gym change-room, Shirelle
witnesses intense bickering between Misty and Darlene that Darlene also
fired at Shirelle, but she shrugged it off. Shirelle noted an article in
Heaventeen Magazine on anorexia, which inadvertently contributed to
confusion when Misty mixed up gym shorts with Darlene. Shirelle was in
the locker room the next week but didn't see the rivals swap to their
rightful shorts.
(Misty#5/2) - Misty's Aunt Millie, a former model, gave
away a few old fashionable clothes from her old modeling days to a
thrift shop. Unaware, Misty, Spike and Shirelle excitedly bought several
of them the next day.
(Misty#5/3) - Misty, Spike and Shirelle went to the new
pizzeria at the mall. The girls chose to play arcade games first and got
hooked on a shopping game. They bumped into Darlene, who challenged
Misty to a long sci-fi shooter game. After the long evening, they went
home without having eaten any pizza.
(Misty#6/2) - In June, Misty, Spike and Shirelle were again clothes shopping and came across an apparently new shop "Boutique Magique"; they all tried on cheaply priced clothes but it was only Misty who bought a bold superhero-style outfit with two lightning bolt logos on it. She chose to wear the clothing home and the friends parted ways. Misty discovered that her new tunic gave her super powers but washing had caused it to fade and the powers disappear. Misty asked Shirelle to accompany her as they rushed to the mall to the clothes shop, but it had also vanished, apparently replaced with a cake shop.
Comments: Created by Trina Robbins.
The town of Shady Hollows was described as a 2-hour
drive from New York City.
As with the classic "Millie the Model" and similar comics,
the issues included full pages of paper dolls that could be cut out and
preprinted clothes attached; the themed clothing designs were usually
submissions (really in Misty's case, in case you were skeptical like me)
and featured all the major characters. Creator Trina Robbins had much
admiration for the original "Millie the Model" comics.
Shirelle did not appear in a story in issue #4, but was on the cover and had a paper doll cutout.

but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th
anniversary's celebratory event to represent Misty.
