History: (Tales
to Astonish I#30/3 (fb)) - While exploring space, an alien's spacecraft
was caught in a space/time warp. This caused the alien's ship to crash
on Earth, where it became stuck in a bog.
(Tales to Astonish I#30/3) - A vacationing human
named Mary Brown came across the alien, and was frightened by its
appearance. It spoke to her mentally, and explained its situation. Mary
agreed to help it try to free the ship from the swamp. As Mary worked
the controls of the ship, the alien used its strength to lift the ship
out of the muck. Freed, it thanked Mary for her help, and promised to
reward her. After the spacecraft vanished into the sky, Mary returned
to her cruise ship, where she realized the thing had transformed her
from a plain-looking woman to a beautiful one.
Comments:
Created by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.
I honestly can't tell the difference
between "plain" Mary and "pretty" Mary. They look exactly alike, except
"pretty" Mary's eyes are wider.
The creature was never actually
named, "Thing from the Hidden Swamp" was only used for the title.
Clarifications:
The Thing from the Hidden Swamp has no known connections to
A plain-looking woman, Mary was frustrated by her
lack of a social or romantic life. She hoped to get away from it by
taking a Caribbean cruise. While on the islands, she rented a boat and
began exploring a swamp. There, she encountered a giant alien that asked
for her aid in helping it free its ship. She did, and after the
creature left, it turned her from a plain-looking woman into a
beautiful one.
