PORSCHE 904
(S.H.I.E.L.D. Model)
Classification: Terrestrial technology
Creator: Tony Stark
User/Possessors: An unidentified S.H.I.E.L.D. agent
First Appearance: Strange Tales I#135 (August, 1965)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: This modified Porsche 904 has all the standard equipment of this make of automobile but was altered to include weaponry and flight functions with VTOL. The dashboard of the car includes a variety of control panels above the steering wheel, permitting the driver to use weapons and other functions while in flight. Each of the car's four wheels can be shifted into flight mode by rotating 90 degrees; the wheels emit vortex beams which permit anti-gravity flight. The rear of the Porsche 904 can release heat-seeking sidewinder missiles. There are presumably other weapons installed in the car. The car is built from flameproof materials.
History:
(Strange Tales I#135/Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. I#4) - When Colonel Nick Fury of the C.I.A. was chosen to become the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D., an agent escorted him to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier to meet S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Executive Council. En route, Fury and the agent were attacked by several Hydra agents. As they relocated to the agent's modified Porsche 904, a Hydra jet passed overhead and dropped napalm fire bombs ahead of them, but the napalm had no effect on the car's flameproof exterior. The agent activated the car's rear sidewinder missiles and hit the Hydra plane, destroying it. Converting the Porsche 904 into flight mode, the agent piloted it through the air, then docked upon the Helicarrier.
(Strange Tales I#140) - Later, while S.H.I.E.L.D. was engaged in battle with Hydra to stop their Betatron Bomb, the same agent transported Tony Stark to the Helicarrier aboard his Porsche 904 so Stark could deploy his Brainosaur in an effort to disarm the bomb.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.
This was the first S.H.I.E.L.D. Flying Car ever seen; I'm assuming it was used only by the unidentified agent who first brought Nick Fury to the Helicarrier in Strange Tales I#135, since he was still the agent using it in Strange Tales I#140. However, since at the time S.H.I.E.L.D. only seemed to possess one flying car, it might be the same car Nick Fury drove in Strange Tales I#144-145, then lost in #153 when it was destroyed by Hydra (pointedly, Nick asked Sidney Levine to build him a new car, which was his Ferrari - suggesting there weren't other flying cars he could be issued).
Profile by Prime Eternal.
CLARIFICATIONS:
The Porsche 904 should not be confused with:

This unidentified S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was the man responsible for safely escorting Nick Fury to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier where Fury was offered the position of director of the agency. The agent operated a Porsche 904 which had been modified into a S.H.I.E.L.D. flying car and he fought off several attacks by Hydra agents while tending to Fury's wellbeing. Later, this same agent brought Tony Stark to the Helicarrier to stop Hydra's Betatron Bomb.
