NICK FURY's FERRARI 330/P4 BERLINETTA

Classification: Terrestrial technology

Creator: Sidney E. Levine

Users/Possessors: Nick Fury

First Appearance: Strange Tales I#162/1 (November, 1967)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: Nick's custom-built Ferrari 330/P4 Berlinetta was constructed from clear fiberglass (frame and engine), rendering it invisible in normal circumstances. It was driven by a V-12 4.4 liter engine, fired by twin Marlli distributors, and had a five-speed gearbox, all enabling it to travel at 200 MPH. It was also outfitted with a color-changing rheostat that allowed it to change color at the touch of a button. It could be driven by remote control. The Ferrari could fly using vortex beams built into its wheels, was armed with machine guns, nova shells and hydrolic-mounted cannons, and it could drive at night using infra-red headlights.

History: (Strange Tales I#159/1 - BTS) - When he first met Sidney E. Levine, Nick Fury challenged him to come up with a replacement vehicle for him, as his Porsche 904 had been destroyed by Hydra. Levine said he would think something up.

(Strange Tales I#162/1) - Levine showed off the finished car to Nick Fury and Captain America. Fury was impressed, causing Levine to remark "Wait'll that guy Bond gets a load'a that baby!" Fury used his new car to drive Valentina De Fontaine to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new ESP Division location. Later, he used the car to trail agents of the Yellow Claw (actually a robot built by Dr. Doom).

(Strange Tales I#164/2) - In order to track one of the Yellow Claw robot's agents, Fury used his car in its purely transparent mode, utilizing a Spectre Suit to render himself as invisible as the car. He tracked the agent until some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents could cause an accident, enabling him to sneak into the agent's car.

(Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. I#5) - Fury drove the Ferrari to a trouble spot the ESP division had alerted him to. It led to a confrontation with Scorpio (Jake Fury), who knocked over barrels of gasoline at the car, but Fury went into flight mode to evade the resulting explosion. He fired the car's machine guns, nova shells and hydrolic-mounted cannons at Scorpio, then finally tried to run him down when that didn't work, but the car was smashed into pieces when it struck the force-field Scorpio had made with his Zodiac Key.

Comments: Created by Jim Steranko and Frank Giacoia.

The Ferrari 330/P4 Berlinetta was a prototype of which only four were manufactured. More information on them at Wikipedia.
