History:
(New X-Men II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Giancarlo Betto, a famous mutant landscaper, was hired by the Xavier's Institute to create a giant hedge maze.

(New X-Men II#1 - BTS) - Xavier Institute's headmasters Cyclops and Emma Frost gave a tour of the school to a group of new students consisting of Callie Betto, Maxwell Jordan, Jay Guthrie, Noriko Ashida, a helmeted mutant and a gelatin-like mutant. During the tour they came across the hedge maze and Emma Frost revealed Giancarlo had created it.

(New X-Men II#3 - BTS / New X-Men II#4 - BTS) - During the school's first Field Day headmaster Cyclops pitted the Hellions against the New Mutants squad, tasked to locate a hidden object on campus. The object was X-Men ally Lockheed who was hiding in Betto's hedge maze. During the Field Day, part of the hedge was destroyed by the New Mutant Wither who used his death-touch to destroy part of the hedge to gain entrance. Once the Hellions had won, Cyclops deemed the property damage on the hedge maze a major issue to be dealt with.

Comments: Created by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir (writers).

Giancarlo Betto has never been seen on panel, he would probably have returned to the Institute to restore the hedge after the incident with Wither. Giancarlo Betto would most likely have been depowered on M-Day.

Some online sources claim Giancarlo's daughter is Callie Betto, also known as the Corsairs' Dryad. Although it seems likely they are indeed related it's never been revealed in any official form, so as of yet it's just speculation. Both Giancarlo and Callie have the mutant ability to control plant life and vegetation. I do, however, think it's rather strange that Emma Frost tells about Giancarlo to a group of new students including Callie, wouldn't she have known if she was his daughter? Although at the time so many students were enrolled at the Institute it would be hard to keep track of every single detail.
