ANESTHESIA

Real Name: Ana (apparently, see comments; surname, if any, unrevealed)

Identity/Class: Extradimensional (Mindscape dimension/Mindspawn race) psychic energy manipulator

Occupation: Agent of Monica Rappaccini;
    former occupation unrevealed (The Sleepwalkers have long made it their purpose to patrol the Mindscape and guard defenseless minds everywhere from evil creatures who would invade other beings consciousness in order to feed upon their mental energies; whether Ana performed such a role is unrevealed).

Group Membership: AIM, Sleepwalkers

Affiliations: Black Fox (cat burglar), Monica Rappaccini

Enemies: Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady), Reptil (Humberto Lopez), Striker (Brandon Sharpe), Wasp (Hank Pym)

Known Relatives: Unidentified mother (sleepwalker), unidentified father (possibly deceased; see comments)

Aliases: "Anna" (probably a spelling error, but Monica Rappaccini called her that once in Ant-Man & Wasp#2)

Base of Operations: Last seen on Earth-9939;
    formerly an AIM ship over Marken, the Netherlands;
    presumably born and/or raised in, and frequently traveled through the Mindscape.

First Appearance: Ant-Man & Wasp#1 (January, 2011)

Powers/Abilities: Like other Sleepwalkers, Anesthesia could use her "gaze" (ocular warp-beams) to break the mental control of foreign entities on a human brain. These beams can also reshape physical matter.

    Anesthesia can levitate and seems to prefer floating over standing or walking, but the extent of her abilities in this regard are undefined.

    She can transport between Mindscape and Earth via a human mind.

    She was strong enough to carry the (at least) unconscious body of her father (probably at least 180-200 lbs.) in her arms. Whether she possesses enhanced strength comparable to Sleepwalker's is unrevealed (see comments).

    Anesthesia seems to enjoy singing lullaby-type songs while she works.

Height: Unrevealed; approximately 5'6" (though she is so often levitating that it's hard to compare her to anyone unless you can see her feet on the floor)
Weight: Unrevealed; (extrapolating purely on the weight of the 7' tall Sleepwalker, she might weigh as much as 169 lbs.)
Eyes: Variable; generally solid yellow or red (no visible sclera or pupil)
Hair: None (she sometimes wears a black wig)

History:
(Ant-Man & Wasp#1 (fb) - BTS) - Ana is the daughter of a female Sleepwalker (who could warp any material to her will with a glance) and a human male.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#1 (fb) - BTS) - Ana inherited her mother's warp beam powers.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 (fb) - BTS) - Ana grew up in another world (the Mindscape?), a child of the Mindspawn. There were no lies amongst her people, no deception, only the imagination and the sincerity of dreams.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 (fb) - BTS) - Ana had some experience (or at least training) with Soul Slugs, which could bond to and mentally control (human) brains.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 (fb) - BTS) - Whether rightly or wrongly, Ana blamed herself when her father ended up sleeping a dreamless sleep and unable to awaken.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 (fb) - BTS) - AIM Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini vowed to help Ana's father in exchange for Ana aided Monica's cause (science, power, etc.)

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 (fb) - BTS) - Ana, who became known as Anesthesia, experienced some of the deepest, darkest nightmares a mind could imagine.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 (fb) - BTS) - Over time, Ana came to appreciate that humans are motivated to help others only for reward. She began to suspect that Rappaccini was using her and had no real ability to cure her father.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#1 - BTS) - To allow Anesthesia to locate and inhabit the mind of Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady), the Black Fox met with Eric O'Grady (aka Ant-Man; as the two were casual friends and occasional partners in some degree of crime), offering Eric a chance to get in the good graces with Hank Pym, whose costume O'Grady had stolen and used for less than honorable purposes before seeking to become a true hero. The Black Fox warned Eric that AIM intended to steal a special item from Hank Pym, repeatedly uttering the word "Fnord" in the process.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#1 - BTS) - Using the term "Fnord," a nonsensical term first described in the Principia Discordia as an interjection with hypnotic effect that settled into the subconscious, the Black Fox marked O'Grady's mind, allowing Anesthesia to find it.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#1 - BTS) - Using the term "Fnord," a nonsensical term first described in the Principia Discordia as an interjection with hypnotic effect that settled into the subconscious, the Black Fox marked O'Grady's mind, allowing Anesthesia to find it.Ant-Man traveled to Avengers Infinite Mansion to meet with Pym; however, in the midst of working with Reed Richards to prevent their reality from being overwritten by that of Earth-9939's and not trusting or taking Ant-Man seriously, Pym put Ant-Man off, initially.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#1) - Drinking all the "Gamma Bomb" malt liquor he had brought to share with Pym, Ant-Man was an easy target for Anesthesia, who eased him into a deep sleep (or he just passed out), allowing Anesthesia to exit his unconscious mind, which she used as a doorway to the mansion. Though the mansions' sensors reported her presence to Pym, she used her matter rearranging warp beams to neutralize security drones, as well as to warp some metal, causing it to surround Pym and remain in a state of molecular flux (preventing him from escaping it by shrinking or growing). She swiftly identified the halo device AIM wanted, stole it, and then escaped through a hole she warped in the ground and then closed as Tigra, Mettle, and Reptil rushed to confront her. Suspecting Ant-Man's involvement in the security breach, Striker rushed to confront him where he had last seen Ant-Man, but arrived only in time to see Anesthesia emerge though a hole in the ground she had created, blow Striker a kiss, and then vanish back into Ant-Man's mind and escape back to the AIM front in Marken, the Netherlands, via her father's mind. She delivered the halo to the AIM agents standing by (who neutralized the tracer Pym had placed on the device), then kissed her comatose father's head before returning to her quarters.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#2) - Seeking to track Anesthesia, Pym transported himself and O'Grady to the Mindscape; they were forced to sheath themselves in the contents of their subconscious thoughts to allow their physical forms to enter the realm.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#2 - BTS) - Pym tracked the Pym Particle trail from Anesthesia (who had been carrying Pym's iHeaven halo) to a mindscape singularity, a gateway to a single sentient mind. They emerged from Ana's father's mind, and Pym swiftly recognized the man as being brain dead, but kept alive by machines; he further speculated they were using the man as a doorway for "the Sleepwalker girl." When a group of AIM agents rushed in, O'Grady distracted them by threatening to kill the old man.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#2) - Anesthesia met with AIM Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini (who was viewing Pym and O'Grady's progress, as she secretly had arranged the plot, at least in part, to try to convince Pym to join AIM. Acknowledging that she felt AIM was doing everything they could for her father, she nonetheless feared he was getting worse. Monica explained that her father's condition was unusual, and that they did not understand how her father's vegetative state (see comments) affected her ability to remain on Earth; further claiming to consider Ana like the daughter she never had (see comments), she told Ana she didn't want to endanger her. Even when Ana recognized an overhead request for Sector 118, where her father was kept, Monica convinced her to stay away and allow some lowly grunt/MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) graduates to handle it.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#2 - BTS) - When Pym and O'Grady took out a number of AIM grunts and located the halo, Monica teleported in and injected O'Grady with a neurotoxin.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#2) - As O'Grady stunned Rappaccini with his cybernetic limbs, Ana rushed in, worried that Monica was hurt. Recovering, Monica instructed Ana to find Pym.

    After Pym sent O'Grady into the iHeaven halo, Rappaccini (with Anesthesia floating by her side) trapped Pym in an atom-sized fiber trap. Announcing her plans to send Ana to find O'Grady, Rappaccini formally invited Pym to join AIM.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3) - Anesthesia awakened O'Grady from the immense neurotoxin-induced pain he was feeling, noting that, even with her experience, his pain was beyond anything she could imagine. Noting a small portion of her history, she offered to heal O'Grady and end his agony, but only if he would leave immediately; Ana did not want to see Rappaccini hurt, and she wanted O'Grady to take her father somewhere far away from this fight. Clarifying that this would mean he would have to leave Pym behind, she asked him if she could trust him to hold his end of the bargain. Reminding her she had walked his mind and seen him, he told that abandoning people was his special skill and that Pym meant nothing to him.
    Via her gaze, she broke the neurotoxin's influence. After a grateful hug, O'Grady told her she was "totally amazing! And really, really, hot," which made him feel really bad when he released an electrical shock that rendered her unconscious; however, when her wig fell off and he saw she was bald, he felt a lot less bad about it.

    Later, after O'Grady had helped Pym escape Rappaccini's trap, Pym realized that Rappaccini's ship was going to crash down on Marken due to an electromagnetic disruption caused by Rappaccini's having used a timequake associated with Reality-9939 ("Earth-Charnel"). As Ana exited the ship carrying her father, Pym was forced to prevent the crash by transporting the ship to Reality-9939's year 2020 AD. As Ana struggled, refusing to leave her father behind, O'Grady tried to convince her to let him help her. Refusing to trust him, she furiously fired an eyeblast, which O'Grady (and his Avengers Academy now-allies, Striker and Reptil, who had come there to observe the other Avengers Pym had summoned) dodged; as she cursed him as a soulless coward, however, she yelled, "Nooo!" as she recognized the energies of the ship being transported.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3 - BTS) - Rappaccini's ship crashed on Earth-9939's barren land.

(Ant-Man & Wasp#3) - Still carrying her father across the barren terrain, Ana asked Rappaccini where she had sent them; as Monica explained their new dystopian home, they were observed by a group of that world's Avengers (Daredevil, Punisher, Rhino, Spider-Woman).

    Vegetative state. While this is usually used incorrectly -- it refers to someone with permanent brain damage and no hope for healing/recovery, and often needing life support to breathe -- it seems like it may be appropriate for Ana's father.
    Further, given he was kept alive by machinery (such as a ventilator inflating his lungs via a tracheostomy (or possibly through his cricoid), when Ana disconnected him from this machinery to carry him out, you'd have to think he would have died within minutes, and she just didn't realize it or was in denial...but that's not confirmed.

    Monica Rappaccini's daughter...Scorpion

    "<My> father sleeps, and he never wakes up. He doesn't even dream because of me."

    It's not clear to me whether her name amongst the Sleepwalkers/Mindspawn is Anesthesia, and her father just called her Ana...or whether he called her Ana, and she eventually became known as Anesthesia.

    Sleepwalker (the host of Rick Sheridan) demonstrated numerous abilities that Anesthesia did not demonstrate in her relatively few appearances. Check out the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Vol. 10: Sleepwalker entry for details on his abilities. Regardless of his abilities, we can only confirm Anesthesia's abilities as what she specifically demonstrated. She may possess diminished, varied, and/or unique abilities due to her hybrid nature.

     Rappaccini claimed to consider Ana like the daughter she never had; I guess since Rappaccini has not maintained a relationship with her actual daughter, Scorpion (Carmilla Black), that's not entirely a lie.
