(Underworld#1 (fb) - BTS) - Mr. Dio, the father of Jackie and Vincent Dio, had a professional relationship with Joseph Silvermane, who kept slipping more and more into dealing with super humans against Dio's advice.
(Underworld#5 (fb) - BTS) - When Mr. Dio thought his job as a mob leader was threatened due to the influx of super humans, Mr. Dio tried out a powered costume himself, but he was mortally wounded in battle with other super-powered criminals.
(Underworld#5 (fb)) - Jackie and Vincent rushed to their dad's bedside as he passed on and Jackie promised to always take care of Vincent.
(All-New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Update#2) - Jackie became one of Silvermane's top men and proved skilled at his work, though Vincent was less proficient and able to succeed.
(Civil War: War Crimes#1 (fb) - BTS) - During a rivalry with Hammerhead's gang, Jackie's best friend, Joey D., was severely wounded. Hammerhead put a screwdriver in Joey's eye for failed payment of two thousand dollars.
(Underworld#3 (fb) - BTS) - Dio got Vincent a job working as a bartender in one of Silvermane's clubs. When the Punisher attacked, several of the men were killed, including Nicky and Skaggs.
(Underworld#3 (fb)) - Dio and Silvermane watched as Sal died from a Punisher wound. Dio was furious when Vincent stated they should get super-powered help, and shocked when Silvermane agreed.
(Underworld#4 (fb)) - Dio was attacked by Hydra agents, but he killed them after learning that Vince had sent them.
(Underworld#1 (fb)) - Dio nearly killed Vincent, but let him live as long as he stayed out of New York.
(Underworld#2 (fb)) - Dio showed up for a meeting with Silvermane and was surrounded by the police before he realized it was a set-up. He managed to turn the gunfire back on the cops, taking them all down, then he saw Vincent in the cop car and realized he'd been betrayed. He moved to kill Vincent, but Spider-Man (Peter Parker) swung by and webbed Dio, leaving him an easy arrest for the police.
(Underworld#1 (fb) - BTS) - Dio spent nearly ten years in the Cage, a secluded prison on an island with heavy guards. He developed a reputation for being the toughest convict there, busting the heads of many super-villains and arranging deals with others, such as Electro (Max Dillon). At some point, Dio saw Silvermane in prison and caught up with him.
(Underworld#1) - His release only three days away, Dio defended himself against Aryan and the Skulls, making Aryan promise to buy him new shirts and cigarettes for the inconvenience, and was put into solitary. While there, another inmate, laughingly called the Hippo, told Dio about the Consultant, a man on the outside who could equip others with super powers, but Dio said he had no interest. Dio was soon released and he struggled to integrate into society, with inflated prices and DVDs. Seeking a job, Dio visited Silvermane and was shocked at how sick Silvermane was. Silvermane directed him to the Owl (Leland Owlsley) as the Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) was out of business. Owl was skeptical as Dio had no enhancements or powers, but offered Dio a position. Owl ordered Mr. Pain to come in and show Dio around, and Dio was shocked to see that Vincent was Mr. Pain.
(Underworld#2) - Pain beat Dio around for a bit, bragging about his powers, but Dio refused to yield. Pain decided to give Dio the chance that Dio had once given him, a chance to escape death but to get out of New York. Dio woke up in the hospital, where a nurse was planning on giving him an enema. He got dressed as another patient talked about how dangerous Mr. Pain was and how Dio should see the Consultant. Dio refused and left. Having been tipped off on one of the Owl's operations on the docks, he armed himself and killed all of Owl's operatives, but one of his bullets struck a gas tank full of SS2 and was knocked out.
(Underworld#3) - Weakened, Dio drug himself to known super-villain hangout, Satan's Circus, passing Rhino on his way in. He asked about a doctor who'd keep things off the record, not wanting to see the Consultant, and he noted all the criminals around him that he'd defeated before and feared for his life. After seeing that no one was around him, he got the address of a doctor and soon arrived, a clown showing him where the doctor was at. The doctor fired a gun at Dio and Dio barely evaded it. He learned that the gas he'd been exposed to was a derivative of the Super-Soldier Serum called SS2 and that he'd been granted enhanced strength, speed, and agility. The doctor sneakily gave Dio a shot that cleared up his dizziness, but a side effect blurred Dio's vision, so the doctor gave Dio some enhanced sunglasses that improved Dio's vision. He also subtly gave a hint to the Owl's operations at the Extra Points strip club. Dio hit several of the Owl's operations over the next few days, finally breaking his way into the strip club and opening fire. He was attacked by Boomerang and the Grizzly, who'd been enhanced by the Consultant. Dio avoided their initial attacks and broke several of the Grizzly's teeth before being thrown through a window. Needing new weapons, he went to the Mechanic, whose card the doctor had slipped into his pocket. Dio was caught in restraints by the security system.
(Underworld#4 (fb)) - The Mechanic accused Dio of being a cop before letting him down. The Mechanic showed Dio how to use his glasses and equipped him with special guns and Adamantium bullets. After leaving a check for the Mechanic, Dio tracked down Boomerang and Grizzly, and took down the latter with several Adamantium shots. He then blew up one of Boomerang's explosive boomerang with a shot and the resulting explosion took off Boomerang's arm. He was ready to kill the duo, but he was hit in the head with a shot fired by the Punisher. The bullet managed to hit the indestructible glasses, saving Dio's life.
(Underworld#4) - Dio and the Punisher traded several blows until the cops opened fire on them and Dio was hit. He woke up in a prison hospital near death. The doctor there injected him with a healing factor as criminals surrounded the building.
(Underworld#5) - Dio soon noticed that his scars and wounds were healing and found a note from the Mechanic, who'd left him a Titanium-weave coat and who expected payment still. Dio went out to confront the assembled villains and fired on an oxygen tank, blowing up the hospital. He was pitched free, but the coat and healing factor let him leave. Jackie went to accept a job from the Owl, but Mr. Pain attacked and knocked Owl out before destroying Jackie's guns. Pain tried crushing Dio, but he was able to get an edge by kicking Pain in his one vulnerable place, between his legs. Dio shot Pain through the window and, despite Vincent's pleading, killed his brother with a shot to the head. He asked for his dad's forgiveness as he did so. He then got a message from the Consultant, who said Dio owed him. The Consultant explained that he had posed as the Hippo, the Mechanic, the prison doctor, and the bandaged man all in order to manipulate Dio into becoming a client and killing Pain. He told Dio he expected payment soon and urged him to use the codename Underworld. Dio conceded and began operating as Underworld in New York City.
(Civil War: War Crimes#1 (fb) - BTS) - Dio agreed to take a job for the Kingpin, who was still incarcerated, reasoning that he could get on the ground floor with the man who'd eventually rule New York again. As assigned, he posed as an enforcer for Hammerhead, who was gathering a super villain army.
(Civil War: War Crimes#1) - Underworld shot and killed Slyde (Jalome Beacher) when the villain disagreed with Hammerhead. As the Trapster walked out, enforcers Vito and Petey cleaned up the body. Later, Dio set up Hammerhead by revealing the location of their meeting to SHIELD, who soon attacked with Iron Man (Tony Stark). Dio shot Hammerhead down before leaving, letting Hammerhead be apprehended. Dio later visited Hammerhead in the hospital and shot him in the head.
(Dark Reign Files) - Quasimodo researched Underworld for Norman Osborn.
