PSYCHOTRON

Classification: Terrestrial brainwashing device

Creator: Dr. Yen

Users/Possessors: Hate-Monger, Colonel Ling, Dr. Yen

First Appearance: Avengers I#41 (June, 1967)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Psychotron was a chamber which could generate mental images to frighten and torment those subjected to it. Among the images it called forth was that of the Hydra, a creature from Greek mythology.

History: (Avengers I#41) - When the Black Widow attempted to infiltrate the Chinese officials she had formerly worked for, Colonel Ling and Dr. Yen subjected her to the Psychotron, hoping to break her will. The Black Widow was overcome by nightmarish visions.

(Avengers I#42) - Colonel Ling and Dr. Yen turned off the machine, and the Black Widow pretended to be so afraid of what she had seen that she could not speak.

(Avengers I#43) - When Hawkeye and Hercules invaded Colonel Ling's facility, the Red Guardian lured Hercules into the Psychotron and turned it on, occupying him with a hallucination of the Hydra.

(Avengers I#44) - Colonel Ling showed Hercules to his ally Yuri Brushov, and explained his plan to use the Psychotron in order to conquer the Earth, generating images so horrible that entire nations would collapse at the sight of them. Hercules remained trapped by the Psychotron until the other Avengers arrived, and the device was damaged by the Black Widow. Hercules broke out of the Psychotron, and it was destroyed with the rest of the facility thanks to a fire started by a stray shot of Colonel Ling's.

(Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. I#9) - The Hate-Monger obtained the plans to the Psychotron, and developed an experimental copy. When Nick Fury led a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to the Hate-Monger's island, the Hate-Monger had Jimmy Woo, Gabe Jones and Dum-Dum Dugan exposed to the Psychotron, intending to torture them until they took their own lives. However, the Hate-Monger's aide Dr. Kaupfman turned against him and destroyed the Psychotron, setting the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents free.
