Powers/Abilities: Unit has extensive powers, only some of which have been revealed.
He can release various pheromones, influencing the behavior and emotions of those exposed to them.
He can subliminally command more
sentient beings (even telepaths) to follow his wishes, forcing them to
use his powers as he directed and/or causing them to abruptly fall
asleep.
He can modulated light patterns for various effects.
His artificial outer mind allowing
him to resist telepathic control (as others focus on the outside mind,
rather than his true, inner mind),
He can control nearby technology,
immediately accessing and manipulating the systems of even sentient
robots, such as Danger. While such beings might retain their own mind,
they were powerless to resist his commands.
Even when contained within a force field cell with anti-subliminal fields, he could still manipulate technology and/or other beings.
Apparently mechanoid, he does not
need air, food or water, and he is presumably highly resistant to
temperature extremes. Even a powerful force blast from Cyclops only
jarred him briefly, although he immediately took measures to prevent
additional such blasts.
Unit believes that his creator's mission rests entirely with him. He further believes that if he succeeds, that would mean that his creators were right, that the ends justified the means and that everyone living would live happily ever after. Conversely, if he failed, he believes that would mean that his creators were monsters on par with the worst of tyrants: If the end is not achieved, the means were just...mean.
To achieve that success, he would do anything. To avoid failures, he takes his time.
Unit is typically dissembling, feigning weakness
and limits to his abilities below his true capacities. He seeks to make
himself indispensable to those around him, especially those in
positions of power so that he can influence their actions and be
informed of anything of significance.
From his billions of years of experiences, he is
extensively knowledgeable.
Unit enjoys and is highly proficient at the game of
chess.

I#3 (fb) - BTS) <A few billion years ago> - The technology of the
beings who would create Unit secured an oasis of calm in
the chaos of existence. As they were immortal, their heaven would
continue in perpetuity; however, a great member of this race noted that
while they had heaven, the rest of the universe had hell. So they
offered charity to those who would accept it; however, those who did
not accept it came to hurt those who did. Unit's creators realized they
could not make Heaven stick without washing away those who would undo it.
(S.W.O.R.D. I#3 (fb) - BTS) - Unit's creators took some "sad, necessary steps," typically dropping off a Unit like him on a planet and retreating. The Unit talked to the inhabitants and, one way or another, by the time the creators returned, that race would be pacified.
For a few hundred thousand years, this plan went well for Unit's creators, but then setbacks occurred. They faced a coalition of "the selfish, the monstrous and the noble-yet-misguided who rejected the vision's majesty." Unit's creators were defeated, and their empire for peace was destroyed.
The Unit that would come to Earth was the sole remaining artifact, and he felt that his creator's mission rests entirely with him. He further believes that if he succeeds, that would mean that his creators were right, that the ends justified the means and that everyone living would live happily ever after. Conversely, if he failed, he believes that would mean that his creators were monsters on par with the worst of tyrants: If the end is not achieved, the means were just...mean.
(Uncanny X-Men II#13 (fb)) - Unit observed a supernatural world in which the demon princeling led the working of a rite to halt evolution. Eventually a messiah emerged, found five acolytes, and together they summoned the Phoenix, which shattered the princeling's incantation, and the demon lords of stasis were swept away.

I#5 (fb) - BTS) - <Some years ago> - "One of those tiresome
cosmic bullies managed to assemble an artifact which gave him total
control of reality. Aware of his own skill in manipulating
ego-befuddled minds, Unit considered that he would have a good, perhaps
50% chance of snatching the artifact away from that being. However,
considering that failure would mean his annihilation, he chose not to
risk the legacy of his people on those odds.
this seems likely to refer to Thanos and the Infinity
Gauntlet, but it could certainly be someone else

I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Unit was imprisoned in the Brig, the prison of the
S.W.O.R.D.'s Peak, in a chamber featuring a subliminal dampening field.
(S.W.O.R.D. I#3) - Unit considered his time there a "little thinking break." It did not matter to him who was in charge, just that he proved himself indispensable.

I#1 - BTS) - After Death's Head abducted Abigail Brand's half-brother
Lothi from the Peak and SWORD's staff lost track of Death's Head's
ship, Brand had her team mobilized and the Falchion ship prepped while
noting that she had to "go and talk to the robot."
Prior to bringing her boyfriend, the Beast (Hank McCoy), into Unit's cell, Brand advised him to let her take the lead and not to say anything, no matter what.
(S.W.O.R.D. I#1) - As they entered the chamber, Unit greeted them both by name, complimenting them on their relationship. Nonetheless, he realized that it was never just a friendly visit and asked what he could help her with. Upon her query, he replied that he believed he had a way to pierce Death's Head's stealth field, at least temporarily. Noting that he would forward the data through the informational quarantine, he further advised them that when Death's Head realized that they had found him, he would shift frequencies and that they would get aboard and disable it swiftly.
As they departed, he wished Brand good luck on getting her half-brother back.

I#2 (fb) - BTS) - While Brand was away, Henry Gyrich instituted a coup.
Unit apparently provided a number of pheromone formulas -- as well as a psyche profile on Noh-Varr, aka Marvel Boy -- to facilitate subduing numerous extraterrestrials then based on Earth.

I#2) - Gyrich met with Unit, noting the success of his pheromone
formulae, and Unit noted that it had been his pleasure to share his
extensive experience. While noting that a more sensitive machine may
have its feelings bruised for remaining in captivity while others
remained on the loose, Unit provided further information to capture the
Technarch Warlock and the Warbound..
Upon her return, Brand (alongside Beast and Lothi) met with Unit, who revealed that Lothi was holding an artifact that he claimed not to have in a bespoke smuggling cavity in his abdomen. Lothi accused Unit of lying, but Brand noted that while Unit was "a machine created solely for the purpose of lying," she still trusted Unit more than Lothi.

I#3) - Beast met with Unit, noting both that he had provided
information to Gyrich to facilitate the mass imprisonment of the aliens
(including Brand) and that Unit had wanted him to figure it out.
Relating the history of his people and his motivations, Unit noted that
for one whose existence was immortal and reach was universal must take
the long and wide view.
Beast asked Unit why he would share his loyalties, as Gyrich was in a stronger position, but Unit noted that Beast was formidable and that he would not bet against him yet. Unit then offered to continue this conversation over a game of chess, which he loved, and they started a verbal game of chess; Unit predicted "mate in 18."

(S.W.O.R.D. I#5 (fb) - BTS) - Not wishing the Drenx to destroy Earth and enjoying the limited autonomy as well as the ability to influence the head of SWORD, Unit plotted the Drenx's downfall. He resolved the means to allow the Drenx to take the Peak with minimal casualties while planning to guide Brand and her associates in taking back the Peak. (S.W.O.R.D.
I#4) - Unit then linked into the
computer network and had an image of agent Cecilia communicate
with
Brand, pretending to prepare for her return. (S.W.O.R.D.
I#5 (fb) - BTS) - Unit sent a message embedded in that
communication to
Brand, loaded with chess lingo, to guide Brand, Beast and Death's
Head
in retaking the Peak. (S.W.O.R.D.
I#5 (fb) - BTS) - Unit sent a hidden message along with (S.W.O.R.D.
I#4 - BTS) - At Unit's guidance, Drenx torpedoes paralyzed
peripheral
sector life support and Peak external communications. After Unit
provided a human-tailored pheromone sedative to the air flow,
Drenx
boarding parties easily overwhelmed the few agents remaining
aboard the
Peak, including Gyrich. Unit additionally altered warbound
strikeforce
orders, moving them to disadvantageous positions. (S.W.O.R.D.
I#4) - When the Drenx prepared to
mutilate and then execute their captives, Unit advised them to
keep the
hostages and focus on returning Brand and her associates. Unit
further
advised that they turn off the subliminal dampening fields and let
him
back on the communicators, but the Drenx wisely informed him that
they
would be long gone before removing those shackles. Noting that
they
couldn't blame him for trying, Unit advised them to allow Brand's
craft
to land and then EMP cannons to incapacitate Death's Head and open
fire
with all of their weapons on Brand and Beast. (S.W.O.R.D.
I#5 - BTS) - Forewarned of the Drenx activities by Unit's message,
Brand, Beast and Death's Head left their ship and then ambushed
the
Drenx via the Peak's hull/gate, after which they freed the
extraterrestrial prisoners, who helped them force the Drenx to
surrender. (S.W.O.R.D. I#5) - When the Drenx leader approached Unit and asked him to reverse their misfortune, Unit indicated that the dire nature of the situation would require that he turn off the anti-subliminal fields. As soon as he had done so, however, Unit incapacitated him while allowing the arriving Beast to reinstate the fields. Beast asked why he facilitated the Drenx's defeat when they were going to free him, and Unit noted that he could not risk the legacy of his people on fair odds, that he did not want to allow Earth to be ravaged without a good reason and that he had both freedom and the influence of Brand in his certain location. Beast noted that Unit may not reveal his true motivations until he was killing him (Beast), and Unit agreed. |

(Uncanny X-Men I#535) - Aboard the Peak, Brand sought Unit's
advice
in dealing with a problem with Breakworld. He suggested she
swallow her
pride and contact the X-Men for aid, as they had previously solved
a
Breakworld problem. Brand told Unit that she did not take ethical
pointers from a genocidal maniac, but he corrected her, noting
that he
despised genocide, although he had "merely committed the odd one
or
two." (Uncanny X-Men I#535 - BTS) - Brand contacted the X-Men for assistance. (Uncanny X-Men II#9) - Within the Peak's Brig, Unit considered the differing prisons of conventional prisoners, the Terminus spore, the Voidian, Skrulls, Dire Wraith witches, assorted symbiotes, a pirate-captain Makluan and Xemnu. Despite being contained in the highest security, Unit speculated that his only chance of freedom would be the astronomically low chance that there was some catastrophic cascade in the Peak's fuel feeds in a precise position, it could blow the Brig away from the Peak; while most of the prisoners would die from explosive decompression, some of the most resilient and dangerous alien criminals would fall to Earth. Immediately thereafter, that exact situation
occurred, and the Terminus spores and Unit, at least landed on
Earth.
Alerted of the breakout by Abigail Brand, the X-Men engaged the
developing Termini in Nevada, USA, while Unit arrived at an
unspecified
woodland location in Canada. As he greeted a hunting father and
son in
a foreign language, the father fired his rifle at him. Stopping
the
bullets with some force while he extended his hand, Unit noted
humanity
to be very egocentric for not being familiar with the Galactic
Base
language, and he further noted violence against strangers to be
awful.
Noting that some might argue that such an assault gave him the
freedom
to do whatever he had to in self defense, Unit immobilized the
father
while telling the son to turn away and cover his ears. Examining
the
rifle, he concluded that its obsolete, non-military nature
indicated
that hunting was considered an acceptable social practice in at
least
some of the planet's cultures. Drawing a scalpel blade, Unit
wondered
what else he could learn from the man. While X-Men and Avengers neutralized the
threats
of Super-Skrulls in New York City, Voidian in Peru, Dire Wraith
witches
in Mexico, the Acute Reflection in Vancouver, Canada, and Xemnu in
Las
Vegas, completed his terminal dissection of the man and then
"peacefully" slew the youth, asking him to think of a happy time
and
then incinerating him. After incinerating the father's remains,
Unit
caused the X-Men's Cerebra to recognize him as a new mutant, after
which Pixie transported Hope, Primal, Transonic and Velocidad to
investigate. Swiftly recognizing Unit as one of the Peak's
escapees,
the mutants engaged him, but Unit dropped Primal and then gave
progressive instructions for Pixie to teleport everyone except
Hope
eight miles north and then for everyone except Hope to go to
sleep. With no nearby mutants for Hope to mimic their
powers, Unit commanded Hope to lower her weapon, after which he
was
excited to encounter a very special mutant, and he noted that they
had
lots to talk about.
(Uncanny X-Men II#10) - After Sydren reported Unit's location, Cyclops had Magik transport himself, Colossus, Emma Frost, Namor and Storm to Unit's location. Magik immediately transported Hope away, but Unit swiftly overwhelmed his opposition, forcing Magneto to launch Colossus into orbit before incapacitating Magneto, weathered near-lightning strikes before forcing Storm to lose fine control over her abilities and drop the ground, and resisted Emma Frost's attempt to control his mind via his outer dummy mind and then used a generalized pheromone barrage that sent Emma and Namor into a passionate embrace. Cyclops blast knocked Unit through several trees, after which Unit commanded him to keep his eyes shut, neutralizing his powers and then forcing him to his knees. However, Danger -- summoned by Magik -- then arrived, battering Unit repeatedly before containing him in an energy field. The returning Hope noted that Unit had harmlessly stopped them from attacking him and had been nice, and Unit confirmed that all he had done was defend himself and that he had wanted to meet some mutants while he was free for a while. Although apparently having been informed of this, Danger nonetheless stated, "it needed to be pacified before the area was safe." Unit confirmed that "it" was certainly pacified, but countered that he was not an escaped prisoner but rather a prisoner whose cell had disintegrated around him. He then stated that he would be grateful if they could lock him up safely. (Uncanny X-Men II#10 - BTS) - Brand convinced Cyclops to contain
Unit in Utopia until the Peak could rebuild the Brig. (Uncanny X-Men II#10) - Unit called for Danger and asked her to
summon Hope and then delete all records of this request from the
security systems and her own memories. When Danger refused, Unit
then
forced her to do so, noting that he had compromised her systems
within
seconds of meeting her. When Hope arrived, he told her that "in what little time remained" he believed they could help each other enormously. |
(Uncanny X-Men II#11) - Hope visited Unit in the X-Brig, asking the
significance of her recent Phoenix-power flare-up. Although he did not
know, he told her it had been a pleasure knowing her, and he further
advised her that no matter what, she should make her own choices and
not be anyone's pawn.
After she departed, Unit told her that when Universal Utopia arrived, her sacrifice would be remembered. He then instructed Danger to make sure she got lots of readings no matter what happened to Hope. When Danger replied, "Yes," he corrected her with "Yes, sir" and further advised her that politeness was important and that she was very much his remedial student.
(Uncanny X-Men II#13 (fb) - BTS) - Prior to going off on her own,
Hope left a message with with the Lights (Pixie,
Primal, Transonic and Velocidad) telling them to ask Unit.
(Uncanny X-Men II#13) - Pixie teleported the others into the X-Brig
where Unit greeted them, noting that Hope must have told them about him
and then asked what they wanted to know about the Phoenix.
(Uncanny X-Men II#13 (fb) - BTS) - Unbeknownst to the Lights, Unit
summoned Danger to stop them.
(Uncanny X-Men II#13) - He told them as he was a creature of
science, he had a lot to learn about metaphysical things such as the
Phoenix. Per Velocidad's query, Unit explained that the Phoenix Force,
as a universal constant, was pushing back against M-Day's massive
mutant de-powering, and that if Hope was able to balance the energies
and merge with it, that that would change.
He clarified that this was just a theory of his, after which she shared the story of a messiah and her acolytes summoning the Phoenix on a supernatural world. He explained that he had not told Hope that she would need her Lights because he wished to see what happened when a Phoenix messiah did not get everything she needed. The Lights prepared to teleport to Hope on the Moon to assist her, but then Danger arrived and incapacitated Pixie, their teleporter. Unit appreciated her timely arrival as he was running low on distracting anecdotes. Stating that this was not her choice but that she was unable to resist Unit's commands, Danger progressively dropped the remaining Lights. Meanwhile, Unit apologized for this distress but noted that he had told Hope to keep her involvement with him a secret.
After erasing the Lights' recent memories and
destroying the note, Unit had Danger drop them off on a beach, where
they assumed they had arrived their while escaping their previous
captivity. Considering them good kids, he explained to Danger that he
had had no need to kill them and they would get to live in whatever
world came next, at least for as long as it lasted.
(Uncanny X-Men II#15 - BTS) - Unit presumably guided Danger to
interact with Psylocke and Magneto when they discussed the fate of the
original. She said, "The price of
getting what you want is having to
live with it. Mutants rule the world. And we now all have to live with
that." Magneto commented on how both he and Psylocke were both
surplus
to requirements for the tasks to which they were assigned, in contrast
to her still having prisoners in the brig. He asked what she had to be
sour-faced about.
(Uncanny X-Men II#15) - Unit remotely instructed Danger that now would be a good time to make a joke and that by making light, she would make more friends. "Give it a try. Go on." Danger then replied to Magneto's query with, "Long working hours."
While neither Psylocke nor Magneto were amused, and they both glanced at each other, uncertain how to react to that, Unit advised Danger, "Oh, you'll learn, my little puppet. This is for your good as much as mine."
(Uncanny X-Men II#17 - BTS) - Via multiple clones of Madelyne Pryor, Sinister captured the "Phoenix Five" (Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik, Namor), plotting to transfer the Phoenix power to the Madelyne clones.
(Uncanny X-Men II#17) - As Danger joined Magneto, Psylocke and Storm
in covertly invading Sinister's subterranean base after he had captured
the , Unit remotely told her to get a closer look at Sinister's
machinery on the clones, as he did not like idea of someone like
Sinister possessing a fundamental power of the universe. Additionally,
he wanted to know how Sinister had harnessed the unharnessable.
(Uncanny X-Men II#17 - BTS) - Danger advised the others that the
technology on the clones was the key, and that she could survive an
environment hostile to humans; Psylocke had her form a suit around her,
and she provided stealth while Magneto and Storm provided a distraction
with a direct assault.
(Uncanny X-Men II#17) - Via the data provided by Danger, Unit
considered that Sinister's machine was of pure and beautiful reason,
and it was as perfect as science could be. "There
is nothing we can do. Run, now."
After Danger recovered Storm, Unit told her to keep running as the
Phoenix force itself retaliated, devastating Sinister's city and
freeing the Phoenix Five.
(Uncanny X-Men II#20 - BTS) - As Danger patrolled the X-Brig, the
Tattooed Man told her that she could not leave them there. She told
him, "I won't. Why do you think I'm
here, you foolish human."
(Uncanny X-Men II#20) - Unit subsequently told Danger, "I didn't even have to force you to lie. You are learning."
Unit then politely had Danger open the cell. When
she asked whether he was going to kill or mindwipe her, or reprogram
her into a simpering dolt who loved him and had to set him free. He
instead told her that she showed such little imagination. He continued
that he should arrange for the whole cell block to detonate to make
everyone assume he was just another corpse in the wreckage...and if he
were planning to hang around there, he probably would, but his schemes
on Earth had reached their natural conclusion. He further noted his
sentimentality toward her, and after noting her past horrors, he
advised her that she was as alive as anyone, that she was beautiful and
that she should not be anyone's prisoner.
Unit continued, informing her that he had
upgraded her security and that it was unlikely that anyone would be
able to control her ever again, "Except
me, of course." 
When she asked what would stop her from revealing what he had done and what he could do, he told her that her surfeit of pride would make her unable to admit her failings. He then told her that as he left the room, she would deactivate for five minutes, and when she woke up, she would be free, "or, rather, as free as you choose to be. Don't pursue me. It'll just get embarrassing. It's been interesting working with you, Danger. Come universal utopia, your sacrifice will be remembered."
As he headed out, she asked him what he was planning, and he replied, "To save everyone, ever, same as always. But the actual specifics? You'll never know. Isn't that a shame."
(Uncanny X-Men II#20 - BTS) - Danger then deactivated for five minutes and awakened to find Unit gone. She furiously unleashed her weapon, cursing Unit. As she departed, Danger opened the cell doors in the X-Brig and set everyone free.

bring them to Unit and then killed that agent. Unit then modified
his
facial appearance to mimic the Drenx's, and they told him that if
he
would tell them how to crush the station's defenses and help them
to
take their "red tithe" from Earth that they would free him.
