His street-earned toughness and
fighting spirit greatly enhance his effectiveness in combat. Max moves deliberately, not
wasting any energy and doing exactly what he intended, both in
the ring and during his daily life. Max fought by the rules and
sometimes took hits for his honorable nature, but his tough
nature allowed him to handle them. While boxing, Max wore a pair
of XL-7 gloves striking with "five hundred pounds" (per square
inch?) of force, which greatly enhanced the force of his
punches. He also wore a helmet and a chest harness, which dripped "syntho-drenalin" into his system to increase his natural strength and speed. Max occasionally smoked
cigarettes and drank alcohol heavily. Weight: 220 lbs.; (equipped) 297 lbs. Eyes: Brown Hair: Brown |

History: (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers (fb) - BTS) - Growing up in the underground, Max
barely had time to learn to read and had no knowledge of
fictional stories, like "Through the Looking Glass" (the story
of Alice in Wonderland). (Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super Boxers (fb) - BTS) - Max -- who did not use his surname -- became the heavyweight champion boxer of the Underground, fighting out of the Arena in illegal competitions using powered gloves. He was idolized by the poorer people who watched the fights. Max had two hundred knock-outs,
eight technical knock-outs, and two draws. The Corporations became
concerned about the success of this venue, and they had
Corporate Security Police (CSP; cyborgs or robots ) on the
lookout for such events. His manager, Strap, had to cut the syndicate in for protection money, but he did not fear the syndicate as there was not much they could do without Max. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super Boxers (fb) - BTS) <The year before the main story> - Max knocked out Glinzer in the first round. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers (fb) - BTS) - Although he did not know him, Max
noticed Rolf Brunning -- the lawyer of Marilyn
Hart, the chairman and president of Delcosmetics -- in the crowd at some of his fights. Although Rolf wore
"scuz-rags" like the others, Max appreciated that he didn't look
right. |
|
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers) - Max made his way into the Underground and met
with Strap, whom he teased about his consistent antagonist
relationship with the syndicate. After being suited up, Max met
and defeated his challenger before a cheering crowd. Later, at a bar, he enjoyed the attentions of multiple women and stayed out until 4 AM drinking before heading home. On his way home, he was greeted by a young fan before Strap warned him of the CSP who had busted up a match on the other side of town that night: the corps would crush him when they learned about him. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers - BTS) - The CSP confronted the youth who had
spoken to Max, asking the location of the illegal fight. The boy
fled, but the CSP tracked him. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers - BTS) - With her boxer having lost to the
corporate champion, Ben Clair Oil's Roman Alexis, Marilyn Hart
was desperate to retain control of her business. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers) - When the CSP raided the Arena during one of
Max's fights the next day, Max fled along with the crowd. Rolf
met with Max and convinced him to go somewhere and talk. At a
local bar, Rolf told Max he was what his boss was looking for.
When the syndicate boss and his men showed up, reminding Max
that they owned him, Max departed with Rolf, and the syndicate
-- recognizing Rolf as "corpy" and not wishing trouble from the
powerful mega-corps -- let them go. Max accompanied Rolf to Marilyn Hart's desert roost where wearing fancy clothes he considered a "monkey suit," met with Marilyn, who was impressed with the way he moved and held himself, appreciating the power and cunning in his eyes. Marilyn offered Max the chance to challenge Roman Alexis for the corporate heavyweight championship if he proved himself worthy. Max noted that being a fight fan seemed unusual for a "corp dame -- especially a classy number like you," and Marilyn explained her business interest as well showing him her testing cells, fight androids, and the XL-10 gloves (compared to the XL-7's used in combat) her techs were developing. |
Max agreed to demonstrate his skills for Marilyn, noting that he had not gotten to finish the evening's fight before and that he could use some exercise to wind down. He was silently impressed with the state of the art equipment before he swiftly spotted an opening and dropped the android. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers (fb) - BTS) - Max agreed to the corporate bout. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers - BTS) - Marilyn met with her board of directors,
asking them to wait so she could prove they had not trusted her
in vain. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers) - Max spent the next three months training
vigorously with all of Marilyn's high-tech equipment, which
scanned him, judging his moods and physical condition, knowing
when he was fatigued and knowing when to push and when to let
him coast; as well as when to let him let loose on his own, with
the super-gloves and syntho-drenalin; and when he needed to be
knocked out to have the wind thumped out of his sails. Wanting to return home so
everyone knew he was still alive and wanting to see a new
fighter, Max convinced Marilyn to accompany him to an
Underground fight. When his fans greeted him with excitement,
Max assured them that he had not "gone corpy Max was impressed with the new
fighter, but he and Marilyn were forced to flee when they were
raided by CSP. Finding Strap having been beaten by the CSP, Max
took him and Marilyn back to his place. (Marvel Graphic Novel#8:
Super Boxers - BTS) - Agents of Gary Madison, president of Ben
Clair Oil, reported that Marilyn had found herself a champion,
likely an illegal since his agents could not turn up any
information on him, which would make him difficult to influence.
Madison pushed Roman to train harder than ever. |
Madison subsequently exposed Hart's
fighter as being Underground, which was illegal. Although Marilyn
countered that Max had no criminal record and that she had registered
him with the fight authority, Madison reminded her that corporate
fighters, by law, must be corporate property and that her fighter could
not fight without having signed the necessary lifetime contract.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super
Boxers) - Knowing that with no fight, she would lose the funding she was
using to fend off Madison's takeover bid, Marilyn brought Max to a party
and then back to her private office. Cutting short a kiss, she told him
there was important corporate business to take care of, and she gave him
the form to sign, without which he could not fight Roman; she neglected
to tell him that he was signing himself over as her property. Trusting
Marilyn, he signed the form and then asked him to promise that he would
always love her. They
presumably...fortified...their relationship...
The next day at a press conference,
Roman considered that Max looked like a piece of granite, rough but
scraped raw, while Max considered Roman to look tough and strong, but
soft. Thereafter, Madison and his lawyer revealed to Max that he had
signed himself over as corporate property and that if Delco went under,
ownership of him would pass to its receiver. Furious, Max called Marilyn
a scheming, lying, bitch; Roman restrained him, telling him it was the
law, but Max departed telling him to take his law and shove it.
Max returned to the Underground and drank heavily at a dive bar. Strap found him after almost two days and told him how Marilyn had been working to break down the corporate rules, giving workers some freedom to decide how they wanted to live; which was why Madison and other corporations were trying to take her down. He told Max that he was Marilyn's last chance and the last chance for the whole Underground.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super Boxers (fb) - BTS) - Max returned to Delcos' compound and agreed to go forward with the fight, although he refused to speak to Marilyn.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super Boxers - BTS) - Madison sent a fight android into Marilyn's compound where it punched down Rolf and...
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super
Boxers (fb) - BTS) - ...stole the XL-10 glove technology, which which
Roman was then outfitted.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super
Boxers) - Undergrounders were allowed to attend the fight. Secretly
wearing greatly-enhanced technology, Roman dodged Max's blows and
battered him repeatedly. Through the pain, Max began to realize that he
was not facing XL-7 gloves, that he would lose, and that he could
crippled and/or brain damaged.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super
Boxers - BTS) - After Madison gloated about the situation, Strap ripped
out the wires to box transmitting the power to the boxers' equipment,
electrocuting himself in the process.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#8: Super
Boxers) - In the minutes before the emergency
powers systems kicked in, Max convinced Roman to shed the dead weight of
their equipment and to fight it out man to man. Despite Roman's greater
size and strength, Max's fighting skills and toughness allowed him to
win, and he was proclaimed the new champion.
The next day, Max visited Strap, who
noted that he had fought for Marilyn 40 years ago and that she had been
a good boss, after which he died.
After seeing his young fan (who had
apparently escaped the CSP), Max met with Marilyn who had come to see
him, and he shared what Strap had told him about her. She apologized for
using him to save her company and herself, and he acknowledged that they
had a lot of time to talk about things.

Published in 1983, this story took
place "in the future. The not too distant future."
Max's manager, Strap, got into the business back in
'95, and he notes that he fought under Marilyn 40 years ago, so
presumably the story took place around 53 years in the future...possibly
more or less...
Earth-83139 Alternate near future; world largely ruled by mega-corporations. Underground Super-Boxer Max Turner defeated Corporate champion Roman Alexis. Marvel Graphic Novel #8: Super-Boxers (1983)
I'm not sure what was up with the three-fingered boxing gloves the corporate super boxers used...I guess they had two fingers inside one of the glove fingers, or it was like a regular boxing glove/mit on the inside, but just contoured to look like three fingers on the outside.
