History:
(Girl Confessions I#18/4) - Kitty worked as a cook at the mountain training camp her father ran for boxers. One of the boxers her father represented was Marty Miller, said to be the coming heavyweight champion of the world. Marty was immediately taken with Kitty and one evening before dinner, he confronted her in the woods, suggesting they should get "better acquainted." Kitty had seen other women paying attention to Marty but he insisted that he only cared about Kitty. Marty forced Kitty into a kiss but she broke away from him, saying Marty hurt her by grabbing her and accusing him of believing he could win over any woman by showing off his muscles. Kitty wanted something "more than brute strength" in the man she loved. To herself, Kitty felt Marty was simply in love with himself and no more tender than a tiger. As she cooked dinner for the camp that night, she mused that she wouldn't be like all the other women who fell for Marty but she did wish he were different.

    The next day, Kitty watched Marty practice in the ring. She saw other women watching him and observed as they flirted with him after he left the ring. Kitty found herself feeling jealousy and went to a nearby lake, trying to sort out her feelings. Marty followed Kitty to the lake and again professed his love for her. Marty insisted he wanted to marry Kitty and started to kiss her but Kitty pulled away from him again and declared Marty just wanted to "bend everybody" to his will. Accusing him of bull strength and arrogance, Kitty stormed off back to the camp.

    On her way back through the woods, Kitty met Paul Terhune, a poet who was wandering through the woods for inspiration and was surprised to find himself at a training camp. Paul asked to stay at the camp and Kitty's father agreed, thinking it might be good to have a stranger around to ease the tension. In time, Kitty was impressed by Paul's thoughtfulness and serene nature. When she asked him if he had a home, Paul insisted he was happy to wander and see what was over the next horizon. For several days, Kitty spent her time almost constantly with Paul.

    One day, Paul took Kitty on a walk through the woods, talking about the beauty of the forest. Paul admitted he had fallen in love with Kitty and they kissed. Paul asked Kitty to marry him. Kitty warned Paul that if Marty found out about them, he'd try to harm Paul. As if on cue, Marty burst on the scene, outraged to see Kitty "making love in the woods with this-- this weakling!" Marty grabbed Paul and punched him. Incensed, Kitty told Marty she was in love with Paul and was going to marry him.

    Hearing this, Marty apologized for his behavior, saying all he ever wanted was for Kitty to be happy and if she was happier with Paul than with him, he would step aside. Kitty was surprised to discover Marty had a sensitive side after all. Marty admitted that, as a prizefighter, he had to conceal his feelings and avoid showing weakness around opponents. Kitty realized Marty really was the right man for her. Paul gave Kitty his blessing and she embraced Marty with a kiss. Paul resumed his wandering, as what he really wanted was what lay behind the horizon.

    This feels a bit odd for a romance comic-- normally the woman ends up with the sensitive, caring soul, not the boorish jock.

    Paul Terhune looks like he was modeled on actor Leslie Howard, particularly as he appeared in the 1936 movie the Petrified Forest.

Marty Miller

Marty Miller was a boxer who was said to be the coming heavyweight champion of the world. Skeets Malone served as his manager. When Skeets sent him to a training camp in the mountains, Marty was immediately taken by Skeets' daughter Kitty, who was the camp cook. Kitty repeatedly refused to accept Marty's love because she wanted someone more sensitive. After Kitty fell for Paul Terhune, Marty attacked Paul and hit him but when he realized Kitty truly loved Paul, he admitted that what he wanted most was for Kitty to be happy and offered to step aside. This was the sensitivity Kitty had always wanted to see in Marty and as a result, she chose Marty as her lover.

Paul Terhune

Paul Terhune was a poet who wandered through the wilderness to find solitude and inspiration. Skeets Malone invited him to stay at his training camp. Although Paul had always wanted to find what was over the next horizon, by spending time with Kitty he started to fall in love with her and asked her to marry him. This outraged Marty, who hit Paul. As it happened, Marty's expression of deep caring for Kitty convinced her that Marty was the man she wanted after all. Paul let Kitty go and resumed his wanderings, happy in spite of what had happened because what he really wanted would always be over the next horizon.
