Aliases: None
Base of Operations: A private suite
in a building in presumably midtown Manhattan, New York.
First Appearance: Iron Man
2020#1 (August, 1994)
Powers/Abilities: A genius technologist, Tony Stark
designed and wore numerous models of the Iron Man armor in the past.
As of 2020 A.D., he appeared to
contain himself to a hover-chair that granted him advanced scanning
abilities and presumably a number of offensive and defensive weapons.
He may have used the hover-chair
due to orthopedic and/or neurologic deficits that limited his ability
to stand, or he may just have been a little older, preferred not to
stand and had the technology to facilitate this.
Advanced technology and scanners via
his hover-chair.
He still possessed at least a copy of
his Iron Man armor (at least what was Model 13 on Earth-616)
Height: Unrevealed (approximately 6'; heroic age
Tony was likely 6'1" like his Reality-616 counterpart, but many people
lose a little height with age; however, as Howard, he was not shown to
be standing, and he may or may not be able to stand)
Weight: Unrevealed (approximately )
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Gray (formerly black)
History:
(Machine Man II#1 (fb) - BTS / Official
Handbook of
the Marvel Universe: Alternate Universes 2005: 2020 entry) - In
the
reality of Earth-8410, the Heroic Age ended in the 1980s. Many
heroes mysteriously disappeared, after which the world was taken over
by megacorporations.
(Iron Man 2020#1 (fb) - BTS) -
Tony Stark apparently went into hiding and was believed to be dead. By
2020 A.D., Stark adopted the identity of Howard (after his own father)
and rode in a levitating chair, perhaps indicating some orthopedic
and/or neurologic limitations in his legs. He became the bodyguard and
personal assistant of Wellington Marcus, the third richest man in the
world and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Marcus Amalgamated.
Although Howard believed Marcus
deserved to pay heavily for his crimes, he continued to serve Marcus
loyally, and Marcus trusted him implicitly, considering Howard to be a
practical extension of himself.
(Iron Man 2020#1 (fb) - BTS) - Marcus
designed a computer virus, with which he intended to virtually destroy
computer networks worldwide in seconds, and its antidote, which he
intended to use to accumulate massive wealth and ensure that his
systems became the new worldwide standard.
After Marcus' daughter,
Melodi, stole a copy of the virus and the antidote and was captured and
ransomed by the Irkutsk Liberation Front, Howard accompanied Marcus to
a meeting with Iron Man (Arno Stark, his own nephew) to discuss
retrieving her (specifically so Marcus could recover the copy of the
virus and its antidote). Marcus ordered that the top three levels of
the building be cleared.
(Iron Man 2020#1) - After
their helicopter landed on Stark International headquarters in
Manhattan, New York, Marcus checked with Howard, who confirmed that
Stark was powered up (as Iron Man) but that all weapon systems were in
neutral and that his sensors indicated no other lifeforms on the top
three floors as requested.
Howard remained silent as he accompanied Marcus and
Stark inside to his office to discuss, declining when a floating robot
offered him a drink. He continued to remain silent as Marcus' warriors
attacked the building to test Iron Man's capabilities, and as Iron Man
defeated the attackers. When Iron Man asked who was the man present
during what he thought would be a private meeting, Marcus introduced
Howard as his personal assistant and bodyguard, "practically
speaking, he is an extension of myself."
Howard observed as Marcus subsequently asked Stark to
retrieve his daughter.
(Iron Man 2020#1 - BTS) - Iron
Man subsequently recovered Melodi,
who told him about Marcus' computer virus and plans.
(Iron
Man 2020#1) - Howard reported to Marcus as Stark's plane entered Marcus
Amalgamated's airspace, further noting that Stark had Melodi with him
and was circling and had stated that he and Marcus needed to talk.
Marcus then instructed Howard to engage
auto-tracking of the unidentified craft (Stark's plane), signal the
gunners to action stations and to open a comlink to the plane.
After Stark informed Marcus that he wanted to cut a
new deal to ensure Melodi's safety, Marcus ordered Stark's plane to be
shot down. When Iron Man jettisoned the escape pod containing himself
and Melodi, Marcus was pleased that he would have a chance to try out
their prototype after all. Howard assured him that the suit was
completely powered up with all systems operational, and the pleased
Marcus ordered him to stand by the monitors, as he would be ready in
moments.
(Iron Man 2020#1 - BTS) - Marcus
subsequently attacked Iron Man in his giant armor, threatening to slay
him and Melodi, but Iron Man infected his own armor with the virus and
then injected it into Marcus' suit, and the out of control Marcus was
eventually shot down by his own automated security.
(Iron Man 2020#1) - In the
aftermath, Howard informed Melodi that she now owned the controlling
shares of Marcus Amalgamated, and she and Arno arranged a date to
discuss a merger of sorts.
A few hours later, Howard returned to his private
suite in Midtown Manhattan, where he considered that Marcus had "at
long last received his just deserts," that he expected that Stark
Enterprises (it was called International earlier, but they are
presumably synonymous) would eventually merge with Marcus Amalgamated
and become stronger than before, and that Micky would help Arno to at
last become the man he was destined to be: "A
man who no longer measured life by the length of a dollar but who knew
what it was to help people for their own sake."
Having opened a door that concealed his old Iron Man
armor, Howard further speculated that perhaps Arno would finally know
the thrill he once felt when he was a golden Avenger, a man who would
be proud to be the Iron Man of 2020.
Noting it to have been a good day, Howard further
thought that maybe he would be able to make a few suggestions about
improving his armor when he rebuilt it.
(Official
Handbook
of
the Marvel Universe: Alternate Universes 2005: 2020 entry) - Melodi married Arno, and Howard came to work for Arno, although
still without Arno's knowledge of his true identity.
With Howard and Melodi’s assistance, Arno decided to
pursue more noble goals.
Comments: Created
by Walter Simonson, Bob
Wiacek and William Rosado.
The owner of Marcus Amalgamated was referred
inconsistently as Wellington Marcus and Marcus Wellington.
- Howard
called him Mr .Wellington, a terrorist calls him Marcus Wellington,
and Arno Stark's file on him called him Marcus Wellington.
- Familiar assistants often call their
employer by their first name, with
a respectful "mister" or "master" in front of it; just ask
Batman's
Alfred Pennysworth
- However,
the
man most convincingly refers to himself as Wellington Marcus, and
Arno Stark identified him repeatedly as Wellington Marcus.
- The
general
tone seems to be that Arno called him "Wellington" in the
occasional casual/familiar references but more consistently "Marcus"
in
more formal/objective references.
- The
Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe's 2020 entries identify him
as Wellington Marcus.
- Barring
a ruling from Walt Simonson, Wellington Marcus has the weight of
evidence
Tony Stark is
presumably in his early 30's in the modern era, so in Reality-8410's
2020 A.D. he is likely around 70 years-old.
We don't know exactly how much of Tony Stark-8410's
history, familial relationships, etc. were identical to Tony Stark-616,
so only things that are confirmed for Tony-8410 are included here. Iron
Man 2020's OHotMU entry confirmed Tony to be short for Anthony, and his
parents were confirmed as Howard and Maria Stark.
