History:
(
Captain America Comics#4/6 (fb) - BTS) - The Hairy Ones assaulted the city of Crete, torturing and/or killing many of the guards and inhabitants.

The Hairy Ones rounded up King Amir and his subjects in the city's courtyard, holding them at spearpoint.hairy_ones-tuk-leader

(Captain America Comics#4/6 - BTS) - Hoping that King Amir could help them locate the kingdom of Atlantis, Tuk the Caveboy and his companion, Tanir the Cro-Magnon Man, stopped at the city of Crete.

(Captain America Comics#4/6) - Tuk and Tanir discovered the fate of King Amir and his subjects.

Tuk feared that the Hairy Ones would kill them, and Tanir started by shooting the Hairy Ones' leader with the arrow.

As both Tuk and Tanir assaulted the Hairy Ones with a series of punches, King Amir urged his people to fight and aid the man and boy who had come as their delivers.

After Tanir slew one of the last of the Hairy Ones, the others scattered in fright. hairy_ones-tuk-vtuk&tanir

(Captain America Comics#4/6 - BTS) - King Amir gratefully showed Tuk and Tanir the way to Atlantis.

Comments: Created by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby (see further discussion below).

Much of the information copied from MarvelousLuke's profile on King Amir (originally posted 05/31/2014), in which the Hairy Ones previously had a sub-profile).

According to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe HC#14: Circa 50,000 BC, early humanity existed as the thick-haired Shaggy Ones, the apish Hairy Ones, the brain-eating Goreks, and the Hairless Ones, progenitors of the Cro-Magnons.

Here's how the Golden Age Captain America Omnibus HC credits the Tuk stories in Cap Comics #1-5 (information courtesy of Jeph York):

#1 - by Jack Kirby
#2 - art by Al Gabriele* & unknown
#3 - art by Mac Raboy*
#4 - art by unknown with Al Gabriele*
#5 - title page pencils by Jack Kirby, title page inks by Joe Simon, pencils by Al Avison*, inks by Al Gabriele*

* It was not industry standard in the Golden Age of comics to provide detailed credits for each strip. The artists worked with an ever-changing studio of assistants and secondary artists, while writers often did not sign their name to their work. The stories in this volume were produced by the Simon & Kirby studio and may have included varying levels of work by the creators cited as well as others:

Al Avison, Fred Bell, Martin Burstein, Reed Crandall, Howard Ferguson, Harry Fisk, Al Gabriele, Fred Guardineer, Ernie Hart, Chu Hing, William Clayton King, Bernard Klein, Mort Meskin, George Roussos, Gustav Schrotter, Syd Shores & C.A. Winter

It is not revealed why the Hairy Ones attacked the people of Crete. Luc speculated that it was due to fear of being replaced by being higher on the evolutionary ladder, but they may have just wanted their city and/or their women, or maybe they were hungry?

Quality images were in short supply for the single page in which the Hairy Men appeared. I have included all four panels on which they appeared.

This profile was completed 02/06/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event.
