History:
(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/6 (fb) - BTS) <1757> - Charles was driven insane by a demonic figure he saw (see comments).

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/6) <1757> - Having believed he had seen a demon (although it had just been an ape in a mask) at a Hellfire Club meeting, Charles Grey stabbed a knife into his own chest. Though his body fell to the ground, dead, his spirit remained, though he could not interact with others.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/6 (fb) - BTS) - Charles' descendant Malkin was abusive to his wife, Eleanor, particularly while he was drinking alcohol.

(Marvel Frontier Comics Unlimited#1/6) <1857> - One hundred years later to the night after Charles' death, Malkin mocked his priest and brother-in-law "Matthew" when he returned from a missionary trip from China and spoke of Buddhism and reincarnation (specifically of people being reborn as animals). Malkin further commented that Eleanor was already a mouse and that he was surprised that she liked cats and surprised that one of her cats hadn't eaten her already.

Eleanor asked Malkin to stop as his behavior was not seemly, but he replied that "seemly" was a piss poor word, which was just right for "Miss Mousey." He then slapped her in the face, knocking her to the ground, and asked her why she didn't go find some cheese.

grey_malkin-1857-catgrey_malkin-1857-catvase    "Matthew" tried to stand up for his sister and replied, "Sir, enough I say!" but Malkin hurled his liquor glass at him, called him a sniveling weasel and told him to get out. As he rushed Matthew out the door, he told him that she was his wife and that he would treat her as she saw fit.

Malkin then took off his coat and prepared to batter Eleanor to learn to obey her master. However, Charles' spirit then forced Malkin to stab himself in the chest, after which Charles possessed his body, reanimating it. Malkin watched helplessly as Eleanor helped Charles in his body to his feet, wondering why he was still there.

The following afternoon, Malkin spoke to Charles, telling him that he recognized him as his ancestor, and Charles confirmed this, noting that even he didn't know how he did it. Charles then noted that he was expecting "Matthew" soon to exorcise him.

When Eleanor brought in a stillborn kitten, Malkin's spirit took up residence within the kitten, reanimating it. In the kitten, Malkin became a close companion to Eleanor for a year.

Seeing his chance when Charles eventually attempted to kill Eleanor with a poker, Malkin used his cat-body to knock a vase onto Charles head, killing him. Malkin then caused the cat to jump out a window and impale himself on the spiked fence.

However, by the time he returned to reanimate his own body, Eleanor had already beaten its brain to a pulp with a poker, leaving nothing for either Charles or Malkin to possess.

Comments: Created by Nicholas Vince and D'Israeli.

This story was to be a prologue of a series called "The Fallen," which I don't believe was ever published. These stories were part of Marvel UK's Frontier Comics, kind of like the Marvel Knights or something...a little darker and edgier.

I'm not sure quite what the deal was with the circumstances under which the spirits could take a host. The host body apparently had to be dead, but it still had to be functionally intact. For instance, a stab wound to the heart was workable. A pulped head was not workable. It would seem that being impaled on a large enough object was not workable either.
    Odd little nine page story.

Malkin previously had a sub-profile in the Charles Grey profile originally published 12/18/2005.

This profile was completed 01/01/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
