History:
(Strange Stories of Suspense I#6/5 (fb)) - Johnny Evans was once a sailor. He went to explore a lake near his hometown, which was supposedly "bottomless." Using a diving bell, Johnny intended to descend to the bottom of the lake. As he prepared to use the diving bell, his crew member Ray tried to express his concern about the trip but Johnny cut him off curtly, telling Ray to follow his orders. The diving bell descended until he was unable to see anything through the glass. However, when he reached what seemed to be the floor of the lake, he realized the pressure had equalized and there was no water outside the diving bell.

    Stepping out of the diving bell, Johnny found himself in an immense cavern. Feeling drawn to investigate, Johnny stepped forward with a flashlight to guide his path until he found himself facing a band of men who had three arms. The Three-Armed Men introduced themselves as "the bad ones of the Earth," doomed to dwell deep underground, laboring forever to pay for their crimes against mankind. They claimed Johnny had committed crimes against mankind and must pay. Johnny admitted that he pushed people around but said he refused to change. The Three-Armed Men answered that he must stay with them and that, in time, he'd grow a third arm like them. Breaking free of them, Johnny fled through the cavern and back to the diving bell. One of the Three-Armed Men tried to catch him but he punched the man away. The man dropped a glove off his third arm and Johnny took it with him as he entered the diving bell and radioed Ray to raise him back to the surface.

    When Johnny returned to the surface, Ray opened the diving bell and found Johnny raving about the Three-Armed Men. Johnny's hair had turned snow white. Ray took Johnny to a doctor, who diagnosed Johnny as suffering from shock. Two weeks after the incident, Johnny was mobile again but still haunted by his memories. He still had the glove he'd brought back. He wished he could throw the glove away but something kept him from doing so. One night, he heard someone snooping around his house and fled to the attic to hide. In the morning, he found the glove was missing. After this, Johnny went on the run, afraid the Three-Armed Men would catch him.

(Strange Stories of Suspense I#6/5) - Now a homeless man living among hobos at a "hobo jungle," Johnny met a man named Mac Sutter. Mac suggested that every man has a secret hidden deep inside. Johnny admitted he had a secret but he was reluctant to share it. Mac insisted he should share his story, promising he wouldn't laugh. Johnny agreed to tell his story but insisted they move away from the other hobos. Once they were in a secluded space, Johnny started telling Mac the story of how he encountered the Three-Armed Men.

    Johnny finished the account and remarked Mac wouldn't believe him but Mac replied that he did believe him. Johnny wished he still had the glove, thinking it would at least have been proof, as it was like no other glove he'd seen. At that moment, Mac opened his coat to reveal he had a third arm with a glove on his hand. "That missing glove, Johnny... was it anything like this one?"

Mac Sutter

Mac Sutter was one of the Three-Armed Men but in order to trap Johnny Evans, he disguised his extra appendage and posed as a human hobo. Mac tracked down Johnny and drew him out by suggesting every man had a story to share. Johnny told Mac all about his encounter with the Three-Armed Men. Once the story was done, Mac revealed his third arm.

The Three-Armed Men

The Three-Armed Men were a civilization of men with three arms growing out of their bodies. They claimed they had been "doomed" to labor underground because of their crimes against mankind. When Johnny Evans happened upon them while using his diving bell, the Three-Armed Men claimed that Johnny belonged with them because of his bad behavior. They claimed that by working with them, Johnny would grow his own third arm. Johnny escaped from them and fled to the surface with a glove from one of the Three-Armed Men's third hand but they later sent one of their agents to his home and retrieved the glove. Johnny went on the run, becoming a homeless hobo. One of the Three-Armed Men posed as Mac Sutter, a hobo, and confronted Johnny Evans at a hobo camp, tricking him into sharing his story then revealing his true nature.
