History:
(World of Fantasy I#2/6) - For thirty years, Pete Cooper toiled aboard space freighters. He found himself growing resentful of his many years of space travel with so little to show for his labor and when they returned to Earth he would be retired. When his ship visited the planet Antares and he saw the luxurious lifestyle of the natives he grew increasingly agitated, especially as the Antarians did not permit outsiders to settle on their world. As he walked through an Antarian city he bumped into an Antarean. The Antarian apologized for bumping into him but Pete had worked himself into a furor and angrily lashed out at the Antarian, striking him in the face.
Pete was arrested by Antarian authorities and quickly brough to trial. The court on Antares sentenced him to death as they employed the death penalty for all violent crimes. Pete was held in confinement in an opulent room and informed that he would have whatever he desired until the following day, when he would be executed. Pete ran to a window and saw some of his fellow travelers below then shouted at them to get the captain, alerting them to his status as a prisoner. Captain Larson came to visit Pete in the room the Antarians had given him. Larson asked whether Pete wouldn't rather remain on Antares considering how he had complained about having nothing waiting for him back on Earth, but Pete insisted he be released.
Larson conferred with the Antarian authorities and they agreed to let Pete free as they did not want to injure relations between Antares and the Earth. An hour after Pete's release, their freighter took off back to Earth and Pete rejoiced at his rescue. Captain Larson asked to speak with Pete in his quarters. Larson wondered why Pete didn't want to spend a night in luxury on Antares, considering all of his regrets about his wasted life. Pete answered that he wouldn't throw away his life for a moment's pleasure. At that, Larson suddenly realized that Pete was ignorant of how often Antares circled its sun. He explained that on Antares, one of their days lasted 93 years. Pete could have easily spent the rest of his life in luxury.

The Antarians are the human-like residents of the planet Antares. Their civilization is highly-developed and they have great wealth but they do not permit outsiders to settle on their planet. All violent crimes on Antares are punished with the death penalty, but the condemned is granted whatever he desires for one night; since Antares revolves around its sun much slower than the Earth does its sun, consequently 93 Earth years pass in one day on Antares.
When Pete cooper assaulted an Antarian who bumped into him he was condemned to death. Pete had his Captain Larson arrange his release, which the Antarians were willing to do as they did not wish to harm relations with the planet Earth. It was only after his rescue that Pete learned he could have enjoyed as many as 93 years on Antares.

Captain Larson was in command of the Earth freighter which Pete Cooper served aboard. When Pete was condemned to death on Antares, Captain Larson interceded on Pete's behalf. Larson was aware that one night on Antares would last for 93 Earth years, so when Pete insisted that Larson release him he was puzzled by his behavior. Larson was able to secure Pete's release as the Antarians did not want to injure relations with the Earth. After they left Antares, Larson asked Pete why he chose to leave. When it became clear that Pete did not understand how long a night on Antares was, Larson explained to him the great opportunity he had refused.
