History:
(Generation X Annual 1999 (fb) - BTS) - In his younger
years, unscrupulous business man Hunter Brawn made a name for himself in
the world of high finance. He attended a New Year's Eve party with
banker Zhan Lee and his wife Jingyi; a photograph later preserved the
occasion.
(Generation X Annual 1999 (fb) - BTS) - Brawn secretly laundered large
amounts of money through Zhan Lee's bank. When Lee discovered the
transactions and threatened to contact the police, Brawn ordered Zhan
and Jingyi murdered. Their deaths were made to appear to be a traffic
accident. The following day, millions of dollars were removed from the
bank, leading the financial institution to collapse. Only the bank's
vice president Mr. Lu knew the truth, but kept his silence for years for
which Brawn compensated him handsomely.
(Generation X I#51 (fb) - BTS) - Hunter Brawn had a grandson Tristan who
he felt should ultimately succeed him. At a young age, he began
preparing the boy to one day take over both his business and criminal
enterprises.
(Generation X I#50 (fb) - BTS) - Hunter Brawn employed the services of a
man known only as LeGault. He served as Brawn's enforcer and bodyguard.
(Generation X I#51 (fb) - BTS) - At an unrevealed point in time, Hunter
Brawn acquired a talisman that could generate a large suit of
solid-energy bio-armor around its user. He wore the talisman on his body
at all times.
(Generation X I#50 (fb) - BTS) - Brawn ordered his grandson Tristan
removed from the Massachusetts Academy by private helicopter and brought
to his Brawn's sprawling horse ranch in Vermont. When Banshee followed
the aircraft and tried to infiltrate the premises, LeGault captured him.
(Generation X I#51) -
Brawn participated in the interrogation of Banshee, repeatedly demanding
information about Tristan and the school. When Sean refused to
cooperate, he angrily ordered LeGault to question their prisoner again.
Brawn then met with Tristan, who asked to return to the academy. Brawn
objected, feeling that the school was far away and that Xavier's people
might be too progressive for people like them. But he reconsidered when
he examined a letter from the headmasters, realizing there might be
mutants there.
(Generation X I#51 - BTS) - Generation X ultimately tracked their
missing headmaster down and infiltrated Brawn's ranch to free Banshee.
(Generation X I#51) -
Brawn confronted the students with his guards and LeGault. He touched
the talisman at his neck and generated a massive suit of pink
solid-energy armor. Brawn attacked M and knocked her down, then
withstood Chamber's bio-blast after his armor aligned itself to the
blast's frequency. He seized Chamber and threatened to break his neck
unless Banshee's allies stopped fighting. Brawn insisted that he was
Tristan's legal guardian, that the boy was safe and that Generation X
had endangered him by trespassing and attacking his home. Banshee agreed
to withdraw if Brawn produced Tristan and proved the boy was staying
voluntarily. Brawn had Tristan brought out, characterized the
confrontation as a misunderstanding and announced that he would permit
his grandson to return to school.
(Generation X I#51 - BTS) - Brawn saw Tristan and Generation X off.
(Generation X I#51) - Brawn later explained to LeGault why he allowed
Tristan to go back. Since he intended Tristan to inherit his
multi-billion-dollar crime empire after his death, he felt the boy had
to become strong. Training beside super-powered fighters at the would
serve that purpose magnificently.
(Generation X Annual 1999) - Brawn encountered Tristan and Husk while
riding with LeGault at his horse ranch. He sharply criticized Tristan
for allowing the less-experienced Husk to attempt a dangerous jump, then
grudgingly apologized after Tristan pointed out that the horse had
safely made the jump many times. After the students departed, Brawn told
LeGault that he disapproved of Tristan's relationship with Husk because
he believed women made men weak. He reiterated that Tristan had to
become strong and even ruthless before taking over the business.
(Generation X Annual 1999 (fb) - BTS) - Tristan and Paige
Guthrie grew close during their time at the academy. During a school
break, he invited her to join him at his grandfather's Vermont estate.
(Generation X Annual
1999) - LeGault rode with Brawn at the Vermont ranch while Tristan and
Husk exercised the horses. After the students departed, Brawn summoned
LeGault closer and confided that he disliked Tristan's relationship with
Husk, declaring that women made men weak and that Tristan needed to
become strong and even ruthless before he could ever inherit the family.
(Generation X Annual 1999 - BTS) - Jubilee had learned that Hunter Brawn
was responsible for the murder of her parents years earlier. She traced
Brawn's financial connection to her family, hitchhiking to Vermont to
confront Mr Lu who was still working for Brawn. She forced Lu to reveal
Brawn's money laundering and the murders, then entered Brawn's ranch to
confront him. Before she went in, she contacted Synch so the others knew
what she was planning. After entering the ranch, she first had to fight
LeGault who would have defeated her, if not for the timely arrival of
Banshee and several members of Generation X. They held off LeGault,
leaving Jubilee free to deal with Brawn.
(Generation X Annual 1999) - Brawn greeted her in his office and
activated his energy armor when she accused him of killing her parents.
He battered Jubilee through the building, asserted that she could not
defeat him and revealed that he had sent an operative to eliminate Lu,
the final witness against him.
(Generation X Annual 1999 - BTS) - Emma Frost and Skin kept Mr. Lu
safe while making short work of Brawn's operatives. Lu was free to
inform the authorities of what he knew about Brawn's criminal dealings.
(Generation X Annual 1999) - Jubilee repeatedly struck Brawn's armor,
then supercharged the plasma in her hands and body to a level that
terrified him. She discharged the accumulated energy and destroyed the
building, but deliberately spared Brawn's life. Brawn was arrested and
incarcerated at Vermont State Prison. He dismissed his imprisonment as
lunacy and assured Tristan that his lawyers would quickly free him.
Tristan replied that Lu had told the police everything, including
Brawn's order to murder Jubilee's parents and the millions he had
laundered through the Lees' bank. Tristan said goodbye and ended the
call despite Brawn's pleas.
Comments: Created by Jay Faerber, Gregg Schigiel,
Bob Wiacek.
Tying Hunter Brawn into the death of Jubilee's parents certainly came
out of left field. The backstory of his talisman were never explained.
The armor it generated looked too high-tech to assume it was mystical in
origin. It could also be a piece of alien tech, given the shape of the
headpiece was decidedly non-human. Brawn's fate following his
incarceration remains unrevealed.
