History:

(Excalibur I#98 (fb) - BTS) - Jane Hampshire was born and raised in London, her family still lived there.

(Excalibur I#96 (fb) - BTS) - Under unrevealed circumstances, Jane Hamsphire was recruited into the London branch of the Hellfire Club. She became known as Scribe, able to record and recall everything that was said in her presence.

(X-Man I#23 (fb) - BTS) - Serving with the London division of the Hellfire Club earned Hampshire the position of Red Rook.

(Excalibur I#96 (fb) - BTS) - At an undetermined point in time, Scribe was body-jacked by Mountjoy, a villain from Earth-1191's future.

(Excalibur I#100 (fb) - BTS) - Possibly influenced by Mountjoy, Scribe entered into a secret partnership with Emma Steed, thee Inner Circle's ambitious, power hungry Black Queen.

(Excalibur I#96) - Scribe was present at the London Hellfire Club's meeting and quietly recorded an argument between the Black and Red King about their involvement with Black Air's botched alien experimentation scheme at the Dream Nails facility. Their argument was about to turn violent but the arrival of the Red Queen prevented an altercation. Scribe assured the Red King she had recorded everything that was said, including the next phase of the Club's complex plan to control a powerful demon recently discovered under London.

(Excalibur I#96 - BTS) - Concerned about the lack of oversight over the Hellfire Club's London operation, Black King Shinobi Shaw contacted Brian Braddock and asked him to join the Hellfire Club. Shaw told him of several murders and shady dealings surrounding the club, including the fact Mountjoy had replaced one of the Inner Circle members.

(Excalibur I#98 (fb) - BTS) - Scribe was present when Brian Braddock officially joined the Hellfire Club as their new Black Bishop.

(Excalibur I#98) - Scribe visited Brian Braddock in his hotel room after the swearing in ceremony to discreetly ask for his help. She told him of the Red King and Queen's plan to use magic to wreak havoc: starting in London but soon expanding to the entire country. With her family living in London, Scribe wanted to prevent their scheme from coming to pass. As if on cue, the skies turned bright red as the rising ritual of the demon began.

(Excalibur I#99) - Scribe and Brian Braddock watched a giant column of fire appear outside the hotel and quickly fade away. She told him this was just the first test of the Red King and Queen's newfound power source, urging Braddock to take action before leaving to return to the Hellfire Club. Scribe joined the rest of the Inner Circle when they ventured to Blackwall, the local headquarters of Black Air where they were met by the heads of the organization Threadgold and Sciclua. They led the group to the Necromanteion that had been set up for the Red Queen. Once inside, the Red King announced that they had found a more efficient physical link to the wellspring of demonic power: the severed head of the techno-organic hero Douglock which was capable of high-speed data processing.

(Excalibur I#99 - BTS) - The Red Queen carried out the plan and awoke the demon under London town, however she was unable to keep it reigned in and was quickly overtaken by its tremendous power. As the beast made it to the surface, the city burned.

(Excalibur I#100 - BTS) - Because of the demon's corrupting influence, London's population began exhibiting violent, murderous impulses. Brian Braddock found that the forcefield in his Captain Britain costume protected him from the effects. He returned to the Hellfire Club to investigate, only to find that the Black Queen had just killed the Black King who had succumbed to the demon's evil.

(Excalibur I#100) - When the Black Queen revealed that her mutant powers protected her from the demon, Captain Britain assumed she was the Inner Circle member possessed by Mountjoy, only to be attacked by Scribe who revealed herself to be the bodyhopping villain from Earth-1191. Mountjoy planned to abandon Scribe and take up residence in Braddock, but was unable to penetrate the hero's forcefield before he was forced to retreat.

(X-Man I#23 (fb) - BTS) - After the London debacle, Scribe was arrested and sent to prison. However, Sebastian Shaw saw potential in her and arranged for Jane Hampshire's release. He planned to have the Red Rook join his new Inner Circle in the United States.

(X-Man I#23) - Sebastian Shaw and Tessa held auditions for new members of the Inner Circle on Manhattan's Liberty Island. Selene and her consort Trevor Fitzroy wanted to join up again and brought their underling Madelyne Pryor (actually Earth-9575's Jean Grey). Scribe had to fight Madelyne for the Rook position. At first, Pryor seemed perplexed by her opponent's phasing abilities, but she quickly gained the upper hand when she sensed Mountjoy's presence. Madelyne effortlessly yanked out the villain from Jane Hampshire's body, which caused both of her opponents to faint. Shaw had seen enough and awarded the Black Rook position to Madelyne Pryor.

Comments: Created by Warren Ellis, Carlos Pacheco and Bob Wiacek.

It feels like Scribe was intended to be the London Hellfire Club's version of Sage: a living computer who records and analyses everything she encounters. In her first appearance, Scribe is seen using an alien looking floating device during Hellfire Club meetings that she seemingly manipulates with her powers.

Interestingly enough, we've probably never seen how the real Jane Hampshire acts and thinks. So far she's only appeared as a pawn of Mountjoy. He usually burns through his host bodies faster than Proteus on a juice cleanse, yet Scribe was able to sustain him for extended periods of time and wasn't even lost in the process. Maybe her phasing powers offered some unknown measure of protection, preventing Mountjoy from fully taking her over.

When the Red Queen ripped Mountjoy out of her body, it looked like Jane was still in there and able to regain control. Her status in the Hellfire Club and fate of her mutant abilities following M-Day remains unrevealed. The fact she didn't show up during either the 198 days or the Krakoan era probably means she got... heh... phased out.
