History:
(Mystical Tales#2 (fb) - BTS) - Rigel II
possessed an atmosphere that was almost pure ammonia. Ambient cosmic
radiation swiftly and permanently adapted beings to survive this
atmosphere comfortably. A peaceful race presumably developed on this
world.
(Mystical Tales#2 - BTS) - When
the Terran starship Star I approached Rigel II, Tundra, the mayor of a
village, apparently appreciated that its inhabitant(s) would already
have been permanently changed by the cosmic rays, and he contacted the
ship. Tundra told the pilot, Perry Lane, not to attempt to return to
his world or he would die. Tundra's agents beamed him signals that he
followed to land near their village.
(Mystical Tales#2) - Lane
emerged from his rocket in his spacesuit, but Tundra told him that he
did not need it. Removing the spacesuit, Lane was pleased to find the
air to be sweet and fresh.
Lane spent days there, concluding that he had never known so beautiful and peaceful of a world.
When Lane planned to return to
Earth to tell his people about this world, Tundra explained how the
cosmic radiation had adapted his body chemistry and that he would not
be able to survive on Earth anymore.
Lane resolved to stay on Rigel II.
(Mystical Tales#2 - BTS) - As he was unable to contact Earth, the space administration assumed that he had perished.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee and Joe Orlando.
Obviously these people don't have much in common with Reality-616's Rigellians.
Most of the people involved in the
space program on Earth-56835 did not belief there was life elsewhere in
the galaxy. As Rigel II seemed to disprove this, it would seem that it
was in the Milky Way Galaxy.
Perry Lane and the people of Earth-56835 can get their own profile someday, but they don't belong as sub-profiles under an alien race.
Perry Lane reminds me of the
Beatles' song "Penny Lane." Although this story predates that song by
like 11 years, the road/thoroughfare to which the song is reference was
named somewhere around 1890 A.D.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Rigel II has no known connections to
They were a peaceful society, and
they had the technology to identify and communicate with an approaching
alien starship as well as to provide beams to guide a starship to land
on their world. They presumably had some sort of
translator technology, as they were immediately understood by the
arriving human Perry Lane. (Mystical Tales#2 (fb) - BTS) - Rigel II possessed an atmosphere that was almost pure ammonia. Ambient cosmic radiation swiftly and permanently adapted beings to survive this atmosphere comfortably. A peaceful race presumably developed on this world.
Lane was afraid not to
comply, as he thought the instruction was a threat that they would
destroy him if he disobeyed. (Mystical Tales#2) - Lane emerged from his rocket in his spacesuit, but Tundra told him that he did not need it. Removing the spacesuit, Lane was pleased to find the air to be sweet and fresh. He explained his concerns about a threat of destroying him, but Tundra assured him that they were a peaceful people. Tundra welcomed Lane to Rigel II and introduced him to his daughter, Drina. Lane spent days there,
concluding that he had never known so beautiful and peaceful of a world
nor such wonderful people. He felt loved. Tundra and his wife were like
parents to him, while Drina was a romantic interest. When Lane planned to return to Earth to tell his
people about this world, Drina sent him to talk to her father, and Tundra explained how the cosmic radiation had
adapted his body chemistry and that he would not be able to survive on
Earth anymore. Tundra clarified that that is what he had meant about dying if he tried to return home. Having no friends or family on Earth, Lane was happy to remain on Rigel II. Note: They could be Rigellians, but they could be something else altogether. Humans, aka Terrans and Earthlings, aren't named for our sun. |

![]() ![]() It was Tundra who first contacted Perry Lane in the approaching starship and who welcomed him to Rigel II. It was also Tundra who explained to Perry that the cosmic radiation had permanently changed him to survive on Rigel II and rendering him unable to survive on Earth anymore. --Mystical Tales#2 Note: Some one with brown hair is seen mostly off-panel in two of the group images, but that person is not obviously female. Similarly, someone with darker hair is seen in one panel, but it's also not clearly female...so I don't know if we actually ever saw Tundra's wife, but we definitely didn't get a name for her. More of an upper body image of Tundra is seen in the "People of Rigel II" sub-profile. |
