netredi_race-aotg-undead-godsNETREDI gods

Classification: Semi-humanoid extraterrestrial  (or possibly extradimensional) race (gods)

Location/Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
    formerly either the planet Netredeen (star system and galaxy unrevealed) or some dimension associated with it

Known Members: None identified;
    there appeared to be at least 22 of them

Affiliations: Formerly the Netredi race;
    controlled by Nebula

Enemies: Asgardians of the Galaxy (Angela Odinsdotter, Brunnhilde the Valkyrie, the Destroyer (Asgardian), Anabelle Riggs, Skurge the Executioner, Throg/Simon Walterson, Thunderstrike/Kevin Masterson), Nebula, Netredi race

First Appearance: Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 (December, 2018)

Powers/Abilities: The gods apparently had enhanced longevity (extended lifespans), allowing them to survive for 10,000 years. As they slaughtered themselves at that point, it is unrevealed how much longer they would have survived; perhaps they are otherwise immortal, not aging but able to be slain by certain means. Once they sacrificed themselves, they were reborn via the power of their worshippers renewed faith.

    Shaped by their worshippers' impressions, the Netredi gods took child-like forms.

    Many of the gods have short horns, too blunt to do much damage, but some have longer, larger and/or sharper horns (which could presumably be used to gore an opponent), and at least one has curved horns, like a ram.

    One of the gods appears had two heads, with each one having a short, blunt horn off to the side and pointing away from the other head.

    At least one carried a twin-bladed spear-like weapon.

    One of the gods was a being of fire (or fiery plasma, presumably), able to project flames at least several feet from his hands

    One of the gods was surrounded by flying insects (apparently), perhaps indicating that he/she/it was rotting, or perhaps he could control these insects (that may relate to being undead...but then why did just the one have bugs around it?).

    At least some of the gods (the cyclopean one) had sharp claws that could slash the more durable flesh of Angela.

    The gods likely had superhuman strength and durability, and at least several of them had unique abilities.

Traits: The Netredi were apparently benevolent beings who sacrificed themselves for their worshippers and were reborn from their faith.

    As undead beings under Nebula's control, they were vicious, savage predators. The felt no pain and knew no fear.

Type: Bilaterally symmetric semi-humanoid bipeds
Eyes
: Two (on head; solid yellow, orange, or red color seen); at least one of the gods was cyclopean (possessing a single, central eye)
Fingers
: Three (plus opposing thumb)
Toes
: Three (their feet were very short/stubby, somewhat reminiscent of a pachyderm)
Skin color: Gray or green (these colors may have only represented the undead Netredi)
Average height: Approximately 3'-4' (a few are another 1-2' taller)?
Other distinguishing features: Many variations are discussed under abilities, but the Netredi gods are child-like in size and form (with relatively large head to body size). They long skinny arms and short, stocky legs. They have no visible external nasal or auditory structures.

History:

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 (fb) - BTS) - The Netredi worshipped gods who offered sacrifices to their worshippers: Every 10,000 years, the gods of the Netredi slaughtered each other in honor of those who loved them. Blood rained down from the Heavens, and the Netredi cast aside their garments and danced naked in the downpour.

    Aside from the bloody rain, the Netredi rarely saw evidence of their gods' presence, but with their great sacrifice, the gods proved their existence, and the renewed faith of the followers birthed them once more.

    Because of the endless cycle of death and rebirth, the Netredi had youthful interpretations of their gods. netredi_race-aotg-gods-confront-aotg

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 (fb) - BTS) - Nebula, the alleged granddaughter of Thanos, obtained the Naglfar Beacon, a horn forged by the Dwarves of Nidavellir under the direction of Loki Laufeyson that would allow one to summon and control the dead gods from past incarnations of each pantheon (as most pantheons had creation and rebirth myths).

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 (fb) - BTS) - Nebula used the Naglfar Beacon to summon undead past incarnations of the gods of the Netredi.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2) - The Netredi's morning prayer was interrupted by the arrival of the undead Netredi gods.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 (fb) - BTS) - The undead Netredi gods slaughtered the Netredi.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 - BTS) - The Asgardians of the Galaxy (Angela Odinsdotter, Brunnhilde the Valkyrie, the Destroyer, Anabelle Riggs, Skurge the Executioner, Throg/Simon Walterson, Thunderstrike/Kevin Masterson) traveled to Netredeen in search of the Naglfar Beacon.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2) - The Asgardians of the Galaxy found the slaughtered Netredi, and the only one still alive warned of nightmares before perishing.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#2 - BTS) - The undead gods of the Netredi then appeared and confronted the Asgardians of the Galaxy. The undead Netredi gods fought fiercely, delivering some injuries and strikes against the Asgardians team, including the one with the curved, ram-like horns swallowing Throg and the cyclopean god slashing Angela's side), but they were otherwise torn apart by the Asgardians team.

(Asgardians of the Galaxy#3 - BTS) - Throg burst free from the head of the undead Netredi god who had consumed him, after which the Asgardians of the Galaxy took out the rest of the undead gods.

Comments: Created by Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli.

    Presumably the Netredi gods have a name, like Olympians or Asgardians, named for the native realm, or something else...

    I could do sub-profiles on each of the more unique-looking Netredi gods, but they weren't identified enough, so I'm just including a bunch of images here. If someone wants to make sub-profiles for each of the more unique ones (cyclopean, fiery, ram-horns, buggy, two-headed guy, they can go for it).

    Since Nebula was animating/controlling past generations of gods who had died/slaughtered themselves, it stands to reason that there is likely still a race of living Netredi gods. We haven't actually seen the living/current incarnation of gods, but they would likely be similar to the past incarnations.

    It also seems likely that the Netredi gods may have only slaughtered one village/society rather than every being on the planet. If that's the case, if the Netredi people could regain their faith, their cycle of rebirth might continue.
