History:

(Astonishing I#10/4 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Leon Drago pursued research and experiments on reanimating the dead but felt derided by his peers for his efforts. He continued his work in secret in his home laboratory, initially on animals. However, other scientists were concerned about his direction because of its implications and expelled him from their science group to dissuade him.

(Astonishing I#10/4) - Drago set up an explosive device at his lab to destroy his work should anything go wrong. Success with animals led to his first human subject, a corpse dead for 30 days. Drago used rhythm (to stimulate the dead heart), heat and blood transfusion (and presumably some other secret process). Excited at his successful revivification of the corpse, he called his former colleagues to his home to showcase the "living-dead man," seeking their validation. But they were instead aghast, highlighting that the brain deteriorated quickly at death, and that Drago had made a mindless, shambling "walking dead." Further, the scientists warned that many would want their lost ones returned and the walking dead would increase in numbers to meet demand. Realizing the horror of what he had created but that he had also achieved his discovery, Drago led his walking dead man back to his lab and, to prevent his research secret escaping, detonated his lab, killing his subjects and himself.

Comments: Created by uncredited writer & Al Eadeh.

Drago's mindless "walking dead" was effectively a basic zombie, but lacked hunger and any sense of being directed to undertake a task usually associated with Marvel zombies.

It's not revealed exactly when or where the story takes place. It seems clear to be America or Europe, with the (exclusively) male scientists dressed in clothes circa 1900.
