Base of Operations: Somewhere in the American northwest

First Appearance: Strange Tales I#74 (April, 1960)

Powers/Abilities: The Totem was made of wood, rendering it immune to harm, and possessed superhuman strength. It could "walk" by tilting its body back and forth, and could wield its "wings" as crude instruments for tearing through buildings.

History: (Strange Tales I#74/4) - When the convicts Bull Drago and Hunk came to a native reservation to hide out and started pushing the natives around, their chief recreated an ancient potion which brought one of their totem poles to life. The Totem chased Drago and Hunk all the way back to their cells, and (not stopping there) smashed into the cell...

(Strange Tales I#75/2) - The Totem fled when guards arrived, and returned to the reservation, only to run amok, destroying the reservation itself. The chief tried to warn the mayor of the nearby city, but he didn't listen-- until the Totem attacked his house and tore it apart. The Totem then attacked a group picnickers, but was confronted by the chief, who had created a potion which would undo the effects of the first. He allowed the Totem to grab him, then threw it into its mouth. The Totem became inert, and fell from a cliff, into a river. It was carried out to sea by the river.

Comments: Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

The Totem's appearances were reprinted in Monster Menace#2 and 4 and Weird Wonder Tales#10 and 13.

BULL DRAGO and HUNK

Bull Drago and Hunk were a pair of criminals who escaped from prison together and attempted to hide out on a native reservation, bullying the natives into giving them food and water. The native chief brought the Totem to life to drive them back to their cell, but the Totem followed them there as well. The two prisoners were left in a state of shock.

unnamed chief

The chief of the reservation possessed the knowledge to create the ancient potion which would bring the Totem to life. He used the potion to revive the Totem in order to drive off Bull Drago and Hunk, but when the Totem proved to be unstable, he created another potion which would render it inanimate, and threw the potion into the Totem's mouth. The chief was fatally injured during his scuffle with the Totem, but died happy, knowing that the Totem was gone.
