History:
(Daredevil I#294) - Kingpin, and his aid Typhoid Mary, ordered Maltese to temporarily cripple the daughter of anchorman Peter Scott.

(Daredevil I#295) - Kingpin had Maltese deliver news to Scott that would keep the man under Kingpin's control.

(Daredevil I#296) - Jerry "The Whale" Sabini informed Kingpin about a Hand takeover attempt, and Kingpin wanted Maltese to investigate. When Sabini insulted Kingpin, Maltese gouged out Sabini's eye cruelly.

(Daredevil I#297) - Maltese provided intel to Kingpin's commanders about the rates of crime throughout the city. Minutes later, Kingpin told Maltese to watch for Daredevil leaving the building.

(Daredevil I#298) - At Tavern on the Green, Maltese was reporting to Kingpin about Typhoid Mary's disappearance. When the waiter, Genova, insulted Kingpin by offering him a bill, Kingpin ordered Maltese to follow the waiter home and maim his hand. Later, Maltese heard Kingpin discussing the threat of Hydra seeking to take over his media empire. When Hydra messenger Molare entered, Maltese seized him, but Kingpin wanted to hear what Molare had to say. Molare gave a business proposition from Hydra, then Kingpin beat Molare to death with his cane.

(Daredevil I#299) - Kingpin sent Molare to Dallas to apprehend Lt. Garrote, the man who'd been posing as Col. Strang. Maltese hit Garrote with a wrench to knock him out, then sent him in a crate back to Kingpin. Back in New York, Maltese saw Kingpin unpack Garrote and confront him.

(Daredevil I#300) - After Hydra destroyed all of Kingpin's holdings, Maltese reviewed the damages with a furious Fisk. Ms. O'Neill warned Maltese and Fisk that a federal force was arriving, and Kathy Malper, district attorney, delivered a search warrant, side-stepping Maltese's efforts to placate her. While Fisk faced the grand jury, Maltese made arrangements with a senator to help Fisk, if Fisk helped solve the murder of a cab driver named Jon Gold. Emboldened before Kingpin and Maltese, Tavern on the Green demanded payment from Fisk for all past orders.

Maltese presumably took his name out of some sort of fascination with the film, the Maltese Falcon. Or maybe he's from Malta.
