History:

(Excalibur III#3 (fb) - BTS) - The island nation of Genosha had come under attack by Cassandra Nova's Sentinels, slaughtering millions of Genoshan citizens. After the onslaught the mysterious Chimère found three survivors; the telepathic Hack, the strongman Purge and the teleporting Hub.

(Excalibur III#2 - BTS) - Following Chimère's orders, Hub infiltrated Unus' gang, who were also present on Genosha.

(Excalibur III#3 - BTS) - Hack telepathically picked up the imminent arrival of an Omega Sentinel (Karima Shapandar, trapped in a stasis pod and a prisoner of the Magistrates along with the telekinetic Shola Inkosi). Hub teleported herself and Hack to Chimère's base, hoping to get advice from their enigmatic leader. With Chimère unavailable, Hack and Hub got Purge to help out. Hub teleported them to the cargo hold of the plane where they checked out the two stasis pods.

(Excalibur III#4 - BTS) - Hub and Purge fought the Magistrates who carried the two stasis pods, they were joined by Unus and his gang who believed the battalion of Magistrates attacking Genosha were trying to regain control of the island. During the fight Hack appeared before Hub to announce their leader Chimère had ordered them to retreat and stick to her plan. After which Hub teleported herself and Purge back to Chimère's base.

(Excalibur III#6 - BTS) - Possibly on Chimère's orders Hub checked on the Xavier compound where Charles, Magneto and his allies had been captured by the looter Stripmine and his Asgardian trolls. She was keeping an eye on the young Freakshow who was hunted by two of the trolls when they suddenly noticed her as well. Afraid to get caught Hub quickly teleported herself back to Chimère's base. Hub felt they should help free them, but Hack and Purge felt they should obey Chimère's orders and not get involved.

(Excalibur III#9 - BTS) - While Magneto was off taking care of his daughter the Scarlet With he asked Karima Shapandar the Omega Sentinel to go and find Xavier. To retrieve Xavier much faster she decided to go and ask Hub for help. Karima appeared before Unus and Hub asking for her help, Hub, however, stuck out her tongue and teleported away. Thinking she had eluded Karima by teleporting back to Chimère's base to see Purge and Hack. However, the Omega Sentinel had locked on to Hub's bio-signature and simply sent an interactive hologram to Hub's location, startling all three young mutants. Karima once again asked Hub to retrieve Xavier and Callisto for her, otherwise she would follow her all day. Afraid Karima would learn of her involvement with Chimère she complied.

Comments: Created by Chris Claremont (writer).

Thus far the mysterious Chimère has not been seen on panel but she appeared to be some kinda scheming, enigmatic and big brained person acting behind the scenes. She used her underlings Hub, Hack and Purge to keep tabs on Unus and Xavier, two people actively trying to gain control over Genosha. Chimère's troops kept talking about "the plan" but Chris Claremont never got around to addressing any of its details, let alone who Chimère was and if she was a force for good or ill (or both) on Genosha.

Though, when you know Chimère (or "Chimera" in Latin) means a monster made up of different animal parts, it's not that big a stretch to assume she was up to no good. Given Claremont's tendencies, Chimère might as well have turned out to be Masque (active as a woman then). She would be using the chaos on Genosha to recruit fighters for the circuit of gladiator arenas Storm and Callisto would ultimately find themselves in. And, of course, Masque is known for turning people into monsters (or, chimeras if you will).
