History: (Gunhawks#2 (fb) - BTS) - Colonel Johnson was an officer during the American Civil War, and moved out west after the war's end to run a plantation. He paid top dollar for black people who he illegally put to work as slaves. The Dawson Gang sold Rachel Brown to him as a maid, and he appreciated her, even having a portrait of her painted to hang in his house, but Rachel was stolen from him by a Cheyenne raiding party.

(Gunhawks#2) - After Kid Cassidy brought Reno Jones to prison in River City, some of Johnson's men invited him to join the plantation, and Johnson was impressed with Cassidy, especially as they were both ex-Confederates. When he heard about Reno, he had Cassidy led his men back to River City and break him out so that he could put Reno to work as a slave on the plantation. While the Colonel was having dinner with Cassidy, Reno broke out with the other slaves and led an uprising against the Colonel's staff, while Cassidy held his gun on the Colonel. Cassidy had the Colonel tell him all about what had happened to Rachel.

Cassidy brought the Colonel before his ex-slaves, and the Colonel tried to reason with them, calling them his friends and reminding them how good he had treated them, but they were not swayed, and one of the slaves shot him dead.

Comments: Created by Gary Friedrich, Syd Shores and Jack Abel.

The American Civil War ended in 1865, and Gunhawks#1 opened one year later, so the events of the Gunhawks series would be set in 1866-1867.
