History:
(
X-Men Unlimited I#42 (fb) - BTS) - Kristal van Helden was heiress to the van Helden diamond empire/dynasty, established in South Africa in the 19th Century.

Kristal's father raised her to succeed him as head of the business, calling her his Ice Princess.

Her father diversified their business interests, and he established a lucrative sideline, trading exotic weaponry on the black market.

However, charges of human rights abuses by local blacks forced the van Heldens to flee their native country, and their mines were seized. The strain of these events allegedly resulted in the death of her father.

Kristal inherited the exotic weaponry business and wealth, and she engaged in any enterprise that increased her supply of diamonds.

van_helden-kristal-ef-face-cut    Kristal considered Emma Frost, who could turn into diamond form to be the ultimate fruition of both of her endeavors. She plotted to use Frost's DNA to produce suits of impenetrable exoplasmic armor, and she received advance orders from several buyers; and she intended to use her to cultivate an infinite supply of diamonds, mined and cultured from her raw genetic tissue.

Kristal had her Crystal Palace constructed in Antarctica. She instilled within it a psionic dampening field and constructed a tropical environment complete with genetically-engineered fauna.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42 (fb) - BTS) - Under unrevealed circumstances, Kristal and/or her people brought Emma Frost to her Crystal Palace.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42) - Kristal taunted the captive and virtually powerless Emma Frost, noting that those who believed mutants would inherit the Earth were wrong, and that natural selection favored winners. She further bragged about her family lineage and history and her plans for Emma.
Although she was not able to transform into diamond form, Emma Frost could still read Kristal's superficial thoughts and send images into her mind.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42 (fb) - BTS) -  Dr. Klein and his men harvested Emma's bone marrow, which they then cultured into hybrid DNA grafts that they implanted it into designated hosts. The hosts then metabolized the grafts to develop diamond epidermal constructs that Klein and his men removed via lasers.

Unbeknownst to van Helden or Klein, the diamonds cultured from her DNA focused and amplified Emma's energies, allowing her to progressively influence van Helden's mind. Emma magnified van Helden's desire for diamonds, causing her to demand increasing diamond production.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42) - Dr. Klein reported the successful generation of the epidermal constructs and noted that the suits made from them would be fully functional once they had installed the nanotech-interface operating systems were installed. However, Klein noted that in order to culture diamonds from Frost in the quantities van Helden demanded, they needed a living medium to manifest successfully, that individual human hosts were not up to it and that they needed a viable and sustainable matrix of living tissue.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42 (fb) - BTS) - Influenced by Frost, van Helden had the genetically-engineered flora and fauna implanted with Frost's DNA, creating more and more diamonds with her DNA, which in turn further amplified Frost's power and influence.

Van Helden eventually had created the Crystal Eden, filled with plants and animals covered with diamond epidermal constructs. Van Helden further apparently created a winged suit for herself. However, Frost eventually grew strong enough to deactivate Van Helden's defenses.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42) - Emma surprised Van Helden by entering and meeting with her in her Crystal Eden. Van Helden bragged about what she had accomplished, noting that she had grown up from daddy's Ice Princess to the ultimate Ice Queen. Frost demonstrated her power by causing one of the diamond-coated insects to fly by and slice her cheek, after which she explained how she had manipulated van Helden to amplify her powers.

As she rallied the diamond-creatures around her, Emma further noted that the entire diamond-producing ecology was an extension of her central nervous system. She mentally caused Klein and the rest of van Helden's men to believe themselves to be their five-year-old selves in a petting zoo, and they were slaughtered by the animals.

Van Helden was distraught as her Crystal Eden began to fall apart, and Frost explained that, like her plans, the Crystal Palace and her cultured gems were fundamentally flawed and that neither could handle the energy overload her boosted telepathy generated. Frost turned into diamond form to protect herself, the Crystal Palace collapsed due to a chain reaction, and Frost told her it was Kristalnacht <sic>.

Van Helden was impaled and presumably slain by the diamond spikes and then frozen by the surrounding frigid weather.

(X-Men Unlimited I#42 - BTS) - Frost made her way to a geological research station 20 miles northeast from the former Crystal Palace.

Comments: Created by David Conway and Keron Grant.

Kristallnacht or the Night of Broken Glass refers to a pogrom against Jews carried out by Nazis November 8-9, 1938 A.D.

It would be interesting of some portion of the diamond-producing animal population was able to survive the cultured diamonds' flaws. The Crystal Palace deserves its own profile at some point.
