History:

(Marvel Mystery Comics I#2/5) - In World War I, Queen Ursula led her nation Castile d'Or into the conflict on the side of Germany. Losing the war, Castile d'Or was stripped of its colonies by their neighbor Attainia and Queen Ursula was banished to a lonely islet in the Atlantic.

    From her island exile, Queen Ursula maintained a reputation as a beautiful, captivating woman and remained involved with events in Castile d'Or through agents who kept her appraised of what was going on. Eventually, her allies built up an army and liberated her from the island, taking her to the capital of Castile d'Or and restoring her to power.

    Summoning her aide Josef, Queen Ursula declared her first act would be to wage war with Attainia and regain their lost colonies. When Josef observed they had no excuse to declare war, Queen Ursula ordered him to assassinate their minister in Attainia so that it would seem Attainia had him killed. Josef had an agent carry out the assassination and Castile d'Or threatened Attainia with war in retaliation; after their 24-hour deadline had passed, Queen Ursula delivered a speech in which she declared war to avenge the dignity of Castile d'Or. The war began as Castile d'Or's planes bombed Attainia.

(Marvel Mystery Comics I#3/5) - From her castle, Queen Ursula mused that eventually she would conquer the entire world. When Josef objected that it sounded like madness, Queen Ursula reminded him to keep a civil tongue in his head. She ordered Josef to put up posters declaring: "Repress the Oppressor! Fight!"

(Amazing Mystery Funnies I#24/7) - Queen Ursula heard of the pilot "Lt. Lank" (Perry Webb) but told Josef she doubted a lone man could upset her plans. Later, one of Queen Ursula's officials told her Lt. Lank had destroyed one of their factories. Queen Ursula was annoyed and said that instead of coming to her the official should have taken care of Lt. Lank by himself. Finally, Lt. Lank invaded Queen Ursula's castle so he could see her face-to-face. Suddenly, Queen Ursula lunged at Lt. Lank and kissed him. This annoyed Lt. Lank, who grabbed her by the throat, saying he ought to break her neck. Instead, Lt. Lank placed Queen Ursula over his knee and spanked her, then exited the castle, promising he would continue to oppose her unjust war.

    The American Ace's first appearance was originally published in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly, which wasn't distributed; it was reprinted in full in Marvel Mystery Comics I#2. Martin Goodman didn't like Paul Lauretta's work, thinking it was "too complex," so the serialized adventure ended in Marvel Mystery Comics I#3, incomplete. Lauretta continued the story at Centaur, changing the American Ace's name to Lt. Lank. I've included Amazing Funnies I#24/7 in italics; the story continued in the Arrow I#2/6, but Queen Ursula wasn't in that issue - although the conflict with Castile d'Or was still going on by the end of that story. So even at Centaur, the story was incomplete.

    Paul Lauretta was clearly a big fan of Roy Crane - all of his American Ace/Lieutenant Lank stories feature layouts that look like they were traced directly from Roy Crane's Captain Easy comic strips.

    This profile was completed on 02/23/2026 but its publication was delayed, as it was intended for the Appendix's 25th anniversary celebratory event.
