unidentified-dm2-flyingunidentified
hero

Real Name: Unrevealed;
    possibly "Gorach" (see comments)

Identity/Class: Extraterrestrial (presumably; race unidentified) being (presumably of much greater power than other natives,

Occupation: Unrevealed;
    presumed "super hero";
    at least formerly a soldier (or part of some other military)

Group Membership: None known

Affiliations: The crew of a ship he saved (and presumably many others);
    he may or may not have ever encountered Death Metal as an ally or enemy

Enemies: None identified (but presumably multiple, including those he opposed during an unspecified war);
    he may or may not have ever encountered Death Metal as an ally or enemy

Known Relatives: None

Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
    at least formerly an unidentified planetunidentified-dm2-between_ships

First Appearance: Death Metal I#2 (February, 1994)

Powers/Abilities: The hero can fly (whether under his own power or using some technology, like a jet pack, is unrevealed) through the upper atmosphere of a planet, with sufficient control to depart one ship in front of another ship that was preparing to burn up in re-entry (presumably at a speed of several hundred if not thousands of miles per hour) and to swiftly make a controlled contact with that ship.
    It is possible that he did not fly but rather leapt from one ship to the other.

    He apparently used some magnetic or other technology device to keep a grip on the ship while he programmed a keypad on the ship's exterior, and he had the knowledge to re-program it in seconds, manually triggering its escape thrusters and allowing it to fly safely back into space.

    Additionally, he could survive with his face unprotected in such atmospheric conditions, either breathing sparse air at extremely high velocity, able to hold his breath or not needing to breathe; his eyes and skin were not harmed by the cold and low atmospheric pressure.

    Powerfully built, he apparently had some degree of superhuman durability as well as superhuman strength (to hold onto a ship flying several hundred if not thousands of miles per hour).

    He also had access to his own ship, which could fly in space, or at least the upper atmosphere, and get there swiftly enough to perform an emergency rescue. It could also match another ship's speed and then depart under presumably either pre-programming or remote control.

unidentified-deathmetal-reprogramHeight: Unrevealed (approximately 6'3")
Weight: Unrevealed (approximately 285 lbs.)
Eyes: Apparently solid white (he may or may not have created a semi-opaque membrane to protect his eyes for harsh atmospheric conditions)
Hair: Blond

History:
(
Death Metal I#2 (fb) - BTS) - This unidentified man was a multiple medal war hero, and he was recognizable to the population of an unidentified world.

(Death Metal I#2 (fb) - BTS) - A ship, whose engines were malfunctioning, and its crew faced imminent destruction as it began to enter a planetary atmosphere in uncontrolled fashion. Some reporters or officials reported the ship and its crew to be "toast," as there was perhaps 6-7 seconds until the ship's outer hull melted. Whoever was reporting speculated that there was perhaps a one in a billion chance for them to survive if someone to manually trigger its escape thrusters. "Of course, that someone would have to be insane."

(Death Metal I#2) - This hero flew his own craft somewhat in front of the endangered ship. Departing his ship, the hero reached the endangered ship, used some sort of clamp (magnetic or otherwise) to hold onto it with one hand while he manually programmed the ship to trigger its escape thrusters. Both ships then took off, flying back into space and avoiding burning up in re-entry.

    Meanwhile, the person reporting said, "I can see the headline now. Multiple medal war hero dies in daredevil attempt to save crew. What a way to -- oh...damn!"

Comments: Created by Simon Furman and John Royle.

    This character appeared on a single page of what was labeled Interlude: 3.
    Interlude: 1 involved Spirit, who was involved with Death Metal in issues #3-4.
    Interlude: 2 involved Brassknuckles
, who was involved with Death Metal in issues #3-4.
    However, as far as I know, however, this character did not appear again.
    It could be speculated that, like Brassknuckles and Spirit, this hero had some sort of death wish.
    Perhaps he encountered Death Metal in some untold story...

    Earlier in 2025, Ronald Byrd asked me about this character. Later, in the same year, Loki/Stuart Vandal asked me about him, too, and it occurred to me that he would be a fitting character for Death Metal.

    Unless we get something further from Simon Furman, I like the real name "Gorach" for this guy. According to Google, it's a translation of "obscure" into Scottish Gaelic.

    Other than his war hero history, we've got pretty much nothing on this guy. He could possibly be a mutant, mutate, genetically-engineered being, Eternal, Inhuman, robot, cyborg, extraterrestrial alien (a la Wundarr/Aquarian or Superman), extradimensional alien (like some versions of Hyperion) or maybe something weird and unusual...something we've never even heard of.

    It's not clear whether the hero returned to his ship before the rescued ship took off, but there wouldn't seem to have been time to do so. Maybe?

    This one page contains every appearance/reference to this character of which I'm aware (see below right).

    This profile was completed 11/01/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
