Membership: Three unidentified girls

Identity/Class: Magically mutated humans (possibly Asgardian gods)

Known Relatives: Unidentified mother and father

Aliases: Children, tykes

Affiliations: Audumbla, Karnilla, Loki Laufeyson, Mister Horse, More (Managarmr), Valkyrie (Jane Foster), Valkyrie (Runa)
they didn't really have much of a relationship with Hela; she scared them, and they blasted her, after which Hela fought to save all of Hel

Enemies: Fafnir of Nastrond, skeletal demon creatures of Nastrond

Base of Operations: Manhattan, New York, USA;
formerly the Cradle of Life, Hel, Asgardian cosmos

First Appearance: The Mighty Valkyries#1 (June, 2021)

Powers/Abilities: The magical energies to which the children were exposed granted them god-like properties, if not transforming them into actual Asgardian gods.

They could magically generate butterfly-like energy creatures and project energy blasts sufficient to knock beings and powerful as Hela and Loki off of their feet.

They rapidly aged from a slightly premature birth to perhaps the equivalent of 3-4 years-old over the course of a little over two weeks.

It is unrevealed whether they will continue to rapidly age up to the point of adulthood or otherwise.

History:
(
The Mighty Valkyries#4 (fb) - BTS / myth legend) - Legend states that the Wolf Gods Hati hunted the sun and Skoll hunted the moon. At Ragnarök, they finally caught their prey, devoured them both, and left Midgard (Earth) in cold darkness.

(The Mighty Valkyries#2 (fb) - BTS) - As a pup, Managarmr was imprisoned in a cave in Hel's long barren "Cradle of Life" with a chain on mystic/unbreakable gleipnir around their neck. Although Managarmr had not done anything, right or wrong, this early in life, the gods had feared the prophecy of what Managarmr would do.triplets-valkyries-mv1-sleep

(The Mighty Valkyries#2 (fb) - BTS) - The Asgardian goddess and sorceress Karnilla sought to create life in Hel, specifically as part of her plot to give herself children who would love her as well as to create new gods for what was to come. While her wife, Hela, was away, Karnilla bargained with the Wolf God(s) Managarmr (a dual being apparently comprised of Hati and Skoll) for their release of the Waters of Urdarbrunnr.

Managarmr presumably insisted on their (Managarmr's) freedom in exchange, and Karnilla departed to consider the matter.

(The Mighty Valkyries#3 (fb) - BTS) - Karnilla made a deal with Loki, she would provide gleipnir and the Waters of Fate in exchange for Valkyrie hair (or perhaps specifically the Valkyrie Jane Foster's hair).

(The Mighty Valkyries#2 (fb)) <A few weeks before the main story> - Karnilla returned to the cave containing Managarmr, which also apparently held Audumbla, and agreed to Managarmr's terms. At Managarmr's insistence, Karnilla first used her key to undo the lock around their neck, after which Managarmr apparently hacked up some sort of spike they had previously swallowed, which Managarmr then drove into the walls of the cave, causing the Waters of Urdarbrunnr to pour out. The waters revived the land it touched, with the effect spreading throughout the Cradle of Life.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb) - BTS) <Two weeks before the main story> - Karnilla magically pulled a set of triplets from their mother's womb.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb)) - Departing Midgard and traveling to the Asgardian dimension into the realm of Hel; it was a painless journey, although it got a bit windy over the River Gjoll.

.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb) - BTS) - In Hel, their first hunger, deep and desperate, was sated by milk from the great cow Audumbla, believed to be an aspect of the Elder Earth Goddess Gaea. The first milk gave them strength and power, making them akin to gods.triplets-valkyries-mv1-karnilla

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb)) - Before long they slept, unaware of the effect their departure would have on their mother.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb) - BTS) - On Earth, their mother was emotionally devastated by the impossible absence of her children within her.

(The Mighty Valkyries#3 (fb) - BTS) - The mother was told that she must have had a phantom thing...hysterical pregnancy, but as she had been 36 weeks pregnant and had felt the children within her and then known when they left, she could not accept this.

(The Mighty Valkyries#4 (fb) - BTS) - Karnilla washed the children in the Waters of Urdarbrunnr.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb) - BTS) <Three days before the main story> - Having recently returned to Hel, Hela learned of Managarmr's escape and Karnilla's absence. She resolved to obtain a hunter to recover Managarmr and ordered her servants to locate her wife.

(Mighty Valkyries#1 (fb) - BTS) - Loki obtained a few strands of the Valkyrie Jane Foster's hair. Presumably aware of the potential future importance of the children and of Karnilla's plans, Loki slipped in a strand of his own hair to bind himself to their destiny.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1 - BTS) - Having been a mother for two blissful weeks, she Karnilla was pleased to have finally gotten the triplets to sleep, and when a servant called to her, she silenced him, threatening to "strangle him with a milk-covered rag and feed his body, piece by piece to the slithering spawn of Nidhoggr!" triplets-valkyries-mv3-befly

The servant quietly told Karnilla that Hela had returned and was requesting her presence at court but that she did not know where Karnilla was.

(The Mighty Valkyries#1) - After she had magically banished her servant, one of the triplets awakened and began crying. Cursing Loki, as he should have been back by now, Karnilla picked up and soothed the infant, considering that soon they would reign and claim their place in the universe, and that there would be a time for journeys of discovery and creation, and a time for majestic battles of fire and magic, "but now, little god, it's time for sleep."

(The Mighty Valkyries#3 (fb) - BTS) - Within the Cradle of Life, the little gods grew quickly into toddlers (perhaps physically and mentally 2-3 years old)

(The Mighty Valkyries#3) - While the other two triplets played together, the third conjured an energy form of a butterfly, which she called "befly." As Karnilla praised her cleverness, Loki showed up, asking her if she had borne these children. Karnilla explained that they would be gods for men, so they were the children of men.

triplets-valkyries-mv3-laughlokiWhen Loki questioned further, Karnilla told him to mind his own business.

As they discussed their bargain, Audumbla gave Loki a sloppy lick across his face, causing the children, who were floating in air, to laugh at him. Loki surmised that Karnilla was creating a pantheon, but Karnilla turned the discussion back to their bargain, and he delivered the hair of Jane Foster (without revealing that he had added his own hair, and Karnilla either did not sense this or silently allowed it). When Loki queried whether Karnilla felt that Hela would not approve of her new family, Karnilla admitted to uncertainty but replied that they would need protection in any case.triplets-valkyries-mv3-blastloki

Karnilla wove Jane's hair into the Norn's thread for the triplets, binding their fates: Their lives would find their way into hers, and Jane would be bound to protect them.

Asking the triplets if they liked magic, Loki conjured a small creature (or an image thereof). One replied that she didn't like it, the second considered it cool, and the third said to let her try, and she generated a mystic blast that dropped Loki to the floor.

As the triplets laughed at Loki, he asked Karnilla if she was sure that the "little darlings" needed protection. Karnilla replied, "Yes. They need a Valkyrie. They need Jane Foster."

As Karnilla completed the enchantment, Jane had a vision of children and butterflies, causing her to briefly black out and fall off of her steed, Mr. Horse.

(The Mighty Valkyries#3 - BTS) - Having been thus far unable to locate Karnilla, one of Hela's servants showed her the energy butterflies they had caught in the desert of Nastrond.

.

triplets-valkyries-mv4-karnsing(The Mighty Valkyries#3 (fb) - BTS) - Meanwhile, on Earth, the triplets' mother showed up at the McCarthy Medical Institute, noting the loss of her triplets. She went to the pathology department and began looking through the freezers for her babies' bodies.

Hospital administrator Regina Hagen was going to call the police, but medical examiner Dr. Rudy Gillespie assured her that Jane Foster would be able to handle it.

(The Mighty Valkyries#3 - BTS) - When Jane arrived, the mother asked if she had seen her triplets and then explained her progression to nearly full-term before the triplets had suddenly vanished from within her. She asked if they were dead or otherwise in the hospital? "No one believes me, but I know they were real." Both Jane and Dr. Gillespie believed that she was telling the truth.

(The Mighty Valkyries#4) - Karnilla sang the triplets to sleep.

(The Mighty Valkyries#4 - BTS) - After having been brought home to her apartment, the mother continued to weep, alongside the father.

.

triplets-valkyries-mv4-blasthela(The Mighty Valkyries#4 - BTS) - Wandering Hel, Hela felt that it no longer bent to her will, and she wondered when this had happened and what secrets her queen was keeping from her.

(The Mighty Valkyries#4 - BTS) - Feeling an unexplained connection to the children she had never met, Jane Foster (in her Valkyrie form and with More) looked in on their parents, observing them through their apartment window from across the street. The mother's pain was so massive that the father felt the need to hide his, and he only wept when he was alone, in the showere, in the park, on the subway, etc. Jane sensed that they felt despair, loneliness, embarrassment and shame. Jane had thought that as the Valkyrie she would be able to sense more about them, but she nonetheless felt connected to them somehow...an inevitability, like she was tethered to their destiny.
triplets-valkyries-mv4-gloweyes
(The Mighty Valkyries#4) - As Hela arrived in the Cradle of Life and called for her, Karnilla told the triplets that time was up and that it was time to meet their other mama. Seeing the children, Hela asked what Karnilla had done, and when Karnilla told her, Hela proclaimed that the children were now gods, and screamed "What have you done?!"

Although Karnilla tried to calm the children, one of them hid behind her, while the other two projected energies from their hands that dropped Karnilla to the ground. Karnilla told Hela that they were children and that they did not know what they had done and asked, "You wouldn't hurt them?" Hela replied, "Who do you think I am, Karnilla?" As she felt the ground tremble and the air turn hot, Karnilla realized that she did not know the answer.

triplets-valkyries-mv4-cry .
Hela's fury seemed to be mirrored in the ground, which rumbled, and the air, which grew dark, and Karnilla begged her to stop, but Hela advised her that this was not her doing. The little gods felt terror and cried for the first time.

.

(The Mighty Valkyries#4 - BTS) - Jane Foster sensed their terror and knew she had to go to Hel. She told Managarmr that if he wanted to understand humankind to look into the minds of the miserable parents who had lost their children. More sensed that the parents' suffering was born from something so precious that it was more beautiful than anything they (More) had ever experienced.

In the Library of Asgard, Runa discovered the nature of the threat to Hel, Asgard,  and Jane Foster.

.

triplets-valkyries-mv5-audkarn(The Mighty Valkyries#4) - As Hela futilely commanded Helheim to obey her, an immense stalagmite/spike projected from the ground, skewering Karnilla.

As the triplets looked on in fear, Karnilla's blood poured into the ground, unleashing the immense skeleton of Fafnir, who had been awakened by the Waters of Urdarbrunnr and who told Hela that she had been weighed and measured and found to be wanting.

(Mighty Valkyries#5) - The terrified triplets huddled around Audumbla and the spike-impaled Karnilla -- who weakly told the girls to hold on, and that the Valkyrie would come -- as skeletons emerged from a chasm in the ground, chanting "blod!" (they wished to sacrifice the young gods, presumably to cement Fafnir's rule of Hel).

.

triplets-valkyries-mv5-blastskel

The triplets unleashed energy blasts against the approaching skeletons.

Drawing her own blood, Jane Foster drew the skeletons from them while Runa the Valkyrie put the triplets atop her steed, Mr. Horse, who flew them to safety.

(Mighty Valkyries#5 - BTS) - Ultimately, Managarmr grew to immense size, devouring Nastrond, Fafnir, Hela, Karnilla and Loki. At Jane's insistence, Managarmr subsequently disgorged Hela, Karnilla and Loki.

At Jane's query, Karnilla explained that she had wanted to "bring up new gods, gods for this time, gods for what is to come. And, I wanted someone who belonged to me. Someone who loved me."

Jane told Karnilla that the pain of losing these children was a fraction of the pain that she had caused and that this was unforgivable. Regardless, Runa assured Karnilla that the triplets were safe.

.
triplets-valkyries-mv5-mrhorse(Mighty Valkyries#5) - Mr. Horse brought the triplets back to their true mother in New York. One of them rode atop his head, calling him a cow, which he repeatedly corrected to " 'orse" (with his accent), until she said, "ooorse?" which he considered close enough.

(Mighty Valkyries#5 - BTS) - The triplets were returned to their parents. They periodically generated energy butterflies that had to be let out of the apartment.

(Mighty Valkyries#5 - BTS) - Two weeks later, Loki administered a shield charm over the triplets to keep them hidden for now. After Jane Foster and Mr. Horse arrived, Jane noted how she thought that her feeling of connection to the kids was some kind of Valkyrie thing, but Loki explained how Karnilla had spun her hair into their fate threads, binding their fates together and making her destined to be in their lives forever. Initially, surprised, Jane ultimately considered it to be an honor.

(Mighty Valkyries#5) - Within their apartment, as the girls had generated more butterflies, their mother noted, "Again? Let them out, girls..." As they did so, at least one of them glimpsed those watching over them, and she proclaimed, "Hi, oooorse!"

(Mighty Valkyries#5 - BTS) - Loki explained to Jane that when he gave Karnilla her hair, he slipped in a strand of his own. When Jane asked him why, he noted it to be an impulse, as the little gods who need guidance as they grew older. As she departed, Jane replied, "Godfather Loki, now I've heard it all."

After Jane was gone, Loki quietly noted, "Well, I was thinking more...All-Father."

Comments: Created by Jason Aaron, Torunn Gronbekk and Mattia de Iulis.

There was a whole lot going on in this series! Each time I re-read it (profiling Runa, Kvasir (and everyone from Perdita and Oracle Adventures), Managarmr and now the triplets (plus an update an Audumbla), I find something new.
Definitely read the profile on Managarmr to get the full story of the Wolf God(s)' involvement.

The short version is that Karnilla was trying to create new gods in Hel and that she freed Managarmr in exchange for the waters of Urdarbrunnr. Karnilla subsequently stole a set of triplets from their mother's womb, brought them to her side in Hel (in what would become known as the Cradle of Life), fed them the milk of Audumbla and used the Waters of Urdarbrunnr to transform the young girls into goddesses...but the waters also revived the corpse of the dragon Fafnir of Nastrond, who unleashed his undead army in an attempt to usurp Hela’s reign in Hel.

It's really unfortunate that the mother and the triplets were not given names during the story.
Maybe Aaron or Gronbekk will follow up with them some day?

The art from this series, especially the Jane Foster and Asgard parts, was really great. Although, I don't know what was up with Karnilla's gigantic hair. That was never a thing before...

This profile was completed 11/16/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.

Note: I would have given the mother her own profile, but as she was not identified, I wouldn't know what to call her. Mother of the triplets...or something.

It is not specifically stated that the mother and father, who lived together, were married, so I haven't called them husband and wife...but it's likely that they were married.
