Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Star Sphere is a massive spherical vessel 1 mile in diameter designed to support Galactus. The interior of the vessel include an Earth-like oxygen atmosphere. The Star Sphere is capable of faster-than-light travel through hyperspace and can shift into other dimensions, including the Fourth Dimension, the Crimson Cosmos, the Dimension of Manifestations, the Magus's pocket dimension and the nexus of dimensions. The ship's navigation computers contain interfaces so that beings other than Galactus can steer or plot a course for the star Sphere to follow. The Star Sphere is equipped with a tractor beam to draw small vessels into its docking bay; the docking bay contains additional vessels. Galactus pilots the Star Sphere in order to reserve his own energies and thereby abate his hunger; when necessary, he has drained energy from the Star Sphere to support his vitality. Galactus can also use his Power Cosmic to rebuild the Star Sphere from complete destruction within seconds.

Galactus also maintains a laboratory aboard where he keeps machines capable of repairing damage done to his heralds. The Star Sphere includes the equipment Galactus assembles to form his Elemental Converter to consume energy from planets; the Star Sphere can also emit the same energies used in the Elemental Converter so that Galactus can consume planet without exiting his vessel; it is unrevealed whether this latter form of consumption yields as much energy for Galactus as the machine itself. The Star Sphere has a variety of monitors Galactus uses for communications purposes and to probe nearby locations. Galactus also keeps a variety of extraterrestrial creatures in a zoo aboard the Star Sphere, along with a collection of weapons Galactus has salvaged from planets he visited. Galactus has also permitted quarters for his heralds to reside in. Galactus uses a number of robotic drones for defense (such as his Robot Defenders and Punisher) and maintenance tasks (such as Drone R-11 and UB-747). Weaponry aboard the Star Sphere includes an anti-proton beam and a negatively charged stream of ions. The Star Sphere includes an airlock to enable it to interact with his worldship, Taa II. Occasionally, Galactus has kept the Ultimate Nullifier aboard the Star Sphere but it usually resides aboard Taa II.

History:

(Silver Surfer I#1 (fb)) - Galactus piloted the Star Sphere to the planet Zenn-La, which he intended to consume. The Zenn-Lavians deployed their Weapon Supreme against the Star Sphere, unleashing a destructive blast of cobalt energy that wrecked much of Zenn-La, yet the Star Sphere avoided destruction by temporarily entering the Fourth Dimension, then returning to continue the process of consuming the planet. Before he could continue, the Zenn-Lavian Norrin Radd approached the Star Sphere aboared a small spacecraft and requested an audience. Galactus used the Star Sphere's tractor beam to draw the spacecraft aboard. Norrin Radd reasoned with Galactus and convinced him to accept his service as his herald, becoming the Silver Surfer in order to spare Zenn-La from its destruction.

(Shadows and Light I#3/4) - The Silver Surfer guided the Star Sphere to a planet where the warlord Kallreich had been lured to by his subordinate Skarrzz, who wanted Galactus to kill his master. The Star Sphere used an anti-proton beam to destroy Kallreich's fleet, then Galactus consumed the planet.

(Silver Surfer III#131) - In 1947, Galactus was visited by the Silver Surfer from the future and took him in his Star Sphere to Zenn-La, which was seemingly a paradise since Galactus had spared it. Galactus claimed its seeming survival was actually a sophisticated illusion he had created to trick the Surfer.

(Amazing Spider-Man I#431 (fb)) - The Silver Surfer guided the Star Sphere to a planet inhabited by symbiote beings, which Galactus consumed.

(Silver Surfer III#-1) - The Star Sphere was docked at Taa II as the Silver Surfer set out to find a new world for Galactus to consume.

(Fantastic Four I#48) - Summoned by the Silver Surfer, the Star Sphere brought Galactus to Earth as he prepared to consume the planet. The Star Sphere released a smaller craft which Galactus piloted to Manhattan, where he confronted the Fantastic Four and Uatu the Watcher.

(Fantastic Four I#49) - When the Fantastic Four interfered with the construction of his Elemental Converter, Galactus summoned his Punisher robot from the Star Sphere to deal with them.

(Alpha Flight I#100 (fb)) - After the Fantastic Four had driven Galactus away from Earth, members of the Quwrll saw the Star Sphere leave Earth's orbit.

(Thor I#306 (fb)) - When the Star Sphere passed near Xandarian space, Galactus teleported the Xandarian commander Gabriel Lan aboard the Star Sphere, then took off in hyperspace. Galactus made Gabriel into his new herald, the Air-Walker. Later, Air-Walker was killed by the Ovoids. Galactus brought the Air-Walker's remains aboard the Star Sphere and fashioned an android replica of him to continue as his herald.

(Thor I#225) - Galactus began piloting the Star Sphere back to Earth, where he'd already sent his herald Firelord.

(Thor I#226) - Galactus piloted the Star Sphere to Earth, then disembarked aboard a spacecraft to request assistance from Thor. Galactus brought Thor and Hercules back to the Star Sphere and, with Firelord, set off to confront Ego, the Living Planet. When they approached Ego, he transformed the interior walls of the Star Sphere into humanoid beings to attack the four people inside but Firelord destroyed the humanoids.

(Silver Surfer II#1 (fb)) - Galactus piloted the Star Sphere back to Zenn-La and partially consumed the planet as punishment for the Silver Surfer's disloyalty.

(Dazzler I#10) - Aboard the Star Sphere, Galactus and his Drone R-11 reviewed what they knew about the mutant heroine Dazzler, whom Galactus wanted to deploy against his disloyal herald Terrax. Galactus flew the Star Sphere to Earth and, at Project: Pegasus, captured Dazzler in a tractor beam. Quasar (Wendell Vaughn) attempted to siphon the tractor beam's energy but the ship's defenses jolted Quasar. Quasar proved unable to pierce the Star Sphere as it left Earth. Aboard the Star Sphere, Drone R-11 showed Dazzler the ship's zoo and collection of weapons, then took her to meet Galactus. Galactus explained that Terrax was hiding within a black hole and theorized that Dazzler's powers would assist her within the black hole. Galactus placed Dazzler within a chamber in the Star Sphere and granted her cosmic power so she could survive within the black hole, then sent her to retrieve Terrax with a life-line to tether her to the Star Sphere. However, when Dazzler confronted Terrax, he severed the life-line.

(Dazzler I#11) - Within the Star Sphere, Drone R-11 conferred with Galactus about Dazzler's life-line being severed. Galactus wanted to abandon Dazzler but Drone R-11 continued to monitor her and informed Galactus when Terrax was defeated. Galactus finally permitted Drone R-11 to pilot the Star Sphere back to the black hole and retrieve Dazzler and Terrax. Galactus ultimately removed the power he'd granted to Dazzler and teleported her back to Earth.

(Fantastic Four I#242) - When Terrax attempted to eliminate Galactus by leading him into a conflict with the Fantastic Four, the Star Sphere followed Terrax to Earth.

(Fantastic Four I#243) - Terrax raised the island of Manhattan and threatened to hurl it against the Star Sphere unless the Fantastic Four dealt with Galactus. When they finally agreed, Galactus drained energy from the Star Sphere to increase his dwindling strength so he could battle them. When the Fantastic Four tried to reason with Galactus, Terrax angrily tore through the hull of the Star Sphere, demanding they attack Galactus. Galactus returned Manhattan to Earth then teleported to Earth from the Star Sphere.

(Fantastic Four I#256) - Galactus was aboard the Star Sphere as his herald Nova informed him she'd found a new world for him to consume - the Skrull homeworld.

(X-Men II#89) - Galactus piloted the Star Sphere to the Skrull homeworld.

(Uncanny X-Men I#370) - A Skrull armada engaged the Star Sphere in battle but were destroyed.

(Fantastic Four I#257) - As Galactus neared the Skrull homeworld, he was visited by the cosmic entity Death aboard the Star Sphere as Death encouraged him to destroy the planet. Galactus went on to consume the planet; afterward, Nova took his slumbering form back to the Star Sphere.

(Silver Surfer III#9) - Galactus and the Star Sphere were assaulted by the Elders of the Universe, who wielded the powers of the six Soul Gems to confine Galactus. When Nova turned a nearby sun into a black hole, Galactus consumed the energies unleashed as he broke free from the Elders.

(Silver Surfer III#10) - Standing upon the Star Sphere, Galactus consumed the Elders he'd defeated. Later, while standing upon the Star Sphere, Galactus cast himself into the Dimension of Manifestations to speak with Eternity.

(Silver Surfer Annual I#1/2) - Nova found Galactus collapsed inside the Star Sphere, suffering from having consumed the Elders of the Universe. Galactus ordered Nova to bring him the Silver Surfer for aid.

(Silver Surfer III#15) - The Silver Surfer came to Galactus' aid, alongside the Invisible Woman, Mister Fantastic and Franklin Richards, who docked their spacecraft inside the Star Sphere. Nova and Franklin remained aboard the Star Sphere with Galactus while the others went in search of the Soul Gems, which had been blown into black hole Nova had made.

(Silver Surfer III#17) - When the In-Betweener, Possessor, Astronomer and Trader came to attack the Star Sphere, Nova sent a Punisher robot to fight them, but the In-Betweener destroyed the Punisher. Boarding the Star Sphere, the Trader knocked out Nova and the In-Betweener attempted to kill Galactus. When the In-Betweener decided to hurl Galactus into the black hole the three Elders objected, wanting to save their comrades who'd been consumed. Refusing, the In-Betweener summoned Death and used its cosmic power to kill the Elders. Commandeering the Star Sphere, the In-Betweener piloted it inside the black hole; Franklin used his powers to protect himself and Nova, while the Silver Surfer, Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman returned to the vessel.

(Silver Surfer III#18) - While Galactus and the In-Betweener fought, Franklin tried to steal the Ultimate Nullifier from inside of the Star Sphere to threaten Galactus but the Invisible Woman rendered the device invisible to prevent him from finding it.

(Excalibur I#24) - The Star Sphere brought Galactus to Earth as he sought a confrontation with the Phoenix (Rachel Summers).

(Power Pack I#56) - Galactus dispatched Nova from the Star Sphere to find another world for him to consume.

(Silver Surfer III#51) - Preparing to confront Thanos, who wielded the Infinity Gauntlet, Galactus ordered Nova to find him a planet to consume. Nova reluctantly guided the Star Sphere to a suitable world, which Galactus consumed by deploying his Elemental Converter from the Star Sphere.

(Infinity Gauntlet I#2) - Aboard the Star Sphere, Galactus witnessed a planet's destruction as an effect of Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet.

(Infinity War I#1) - Galactus journeyed into the Dimension of Manifestations, where he saw Eternity had been rendered catatonic by the Magus. To free Eternity, Galactus set off to Earth to find Doctor Strange.

(Silver Surfer III#67) - As Galactus was transporting Doctor Strange aboard the Star Sphere, the Silver Surfer interfered, thinking Galactus meant harm to his friend. Nova and the Surfer fought aboar the Star Sphere until Dr. Strange explained he was willingly assisting Galactus. The Star Sphere departed Earth with the Surfer accompanying them.

(Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme I#43) - Agamotto drew the Star Sphere into his realm to complain to Doctor Strange about sharing his artifacts with Galactus. Galactus forced Agamotto to permit them to continue on their journey, noting its cosmic importance.

(Infinity War I#2) - The Star Sphere brought Galactus, Nova, the Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange to an energy configuration caused by the Magus. They returned to the vessel to follow the energy to its source.

(Silver Surfer III#68) - With Doctor Strange connected to the Star Sphere's computers, Galactus directed him to track the energies wielded by the Magus back to their source, taking the vessel into the nexus between dimensions. The Silver Surfer visited Nova in her quarters on the Star Sphere and Nova confessed it was becoming harder for her to witness Galactus consume planets. Suddenly, the Star Sphere was assaulted by Khoon and his Wolfpack. The Silver Surfer and Nova exited the Star Sphere to fend off Khoon's attack.

(Silver Surfer III#69) - Khoon defeated the Silver Surfer and Nova and forced his way aboard the Star Sphere, demanding Galactus surrender the vessel to him. This threat only amused Galactus and he ultimately forcibly absorbed Khoon into the Star Sphere's computers so he could use Khoon's knowledge of the nexus space to guide his vessel.

(Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme I#44) - The Star Sphere entered the Crimson Cosmos dimension of Cyttorak, who eventually permitted them to continue their voyage.

(Infinity War I#3/Silver Sable and the Wild Pack I#4) - The Star Sphere continued to follow the Magus' energy trail. Feeling they were coming too close to him, the Magus destroyed the Star Sphere with an astral disruption wave.

(Infinity War I#4/Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme I#45/Silver Sable and the Wild Pack I#5/Fantastic Four I#369/Wonder Man II#14) - Galactus rebuilt the Star Sphere within seconds. Galactus eyed the Ultimate Nullifier and considered using it against the Magus. As they drew closer to the Magus, they came across a number of Earth's heroes who were engaged in combat with Thanos, thinking he was responsible for their recent troubles. Galactus brought all of them aboard the Star Sphere and they conferred about the present crisis; learning the Magus' "doppelgangers" were fighting the heroes' friends on Earth, Galactus emitted a negatively charged stream of ions back to Earth to disrupt the doppelgangers. Galactus teleported Thor (Eric Masterson) back to Earth so that his instruments could follow the energy wavelengths from his hammer. After monitoring the results, Galactus convened a meeting with the Living Tribunal and departed to the Dimension of Manifestations with Gamora, leaving the others aboard the Star Sphere. Thanos determined from the Star Sphere's instruments that the Magus was fashioning a duplicate reality that he would control; Thanos took the Ultimate Nullifier and offered it to Quasar, suggesting he should wield it against the Magus.

(Quasar I#39) - Qusar teleported off the Star Sphere to investigate the Ultimate Nullifier at the University of Rus, then returned to the Star Sphere.

(Infinity War I#5/Fantastic Four I#369) - Nova interfaced Professor X, Psylocke, Jean Grey and Moondragon with the Star Sphere's psychic enhancement transmitter so they could attempt to telepathically prevent the Magus' new reality from coming into existence. After the Magus seemingly gained control over the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos sent most of the heroes off the Star Sphere to engage the Magus' doppelgangers in battle while he left to face the Magus himself.

(Quasar I#40) - After Quasar was nullified by the Ultimate Nullifier, Thanos informed the heroes aboard the Star Sphere.

(Infinity War I#6/Fantastic Four I#370) - Galactus returned to the Star Sphere with Gamora. He and the assembled heroes were briefly transported away by the Magus but after the Magus realized he didn't possess the Reality Gem he started a fight with Adam Warlock that began to dissolve the dimension he'd been using as his base; Galactus teleported himself and heroes of Earth aboard the Star Sphere and they were narrowly able to escape back into normal space before the reality imploded.

(Silver Surfer III#75) - When the Silver Surfer came into conflict with Galactus' new herald Morg he deployed fellow ex-heralds Firelord, Air-Walker, Nova and Terrax against Morg while the Surfer entered the Star Sphere to confront Galactus. After a brief fight, the Surfer convinced Galactus that Morg's presence would only invite additional enemies. Ultimately, Morg slew Nova then was himself slain by Terrax. Firelord and Air-Walker returned to Galactus' service and departed with him in the Star Sphere.

(Silver Surfer III#76) - Firelord and Air-Walker engaged in a sparring session aboard the Staar Sphere while elsewhere on the ship, Galactus was resuscitating Morg.

(Silver Surfer III#77) - Firelord and Air-Walker noticed Galactus was spending a lot of time aboard the Star Sphere behind locked doors. Morg's recuperation was completed and Galactus released him.

(Silver Surfer III#78) - Galactus informed the revived Morg that his axe was in the possession of Terrax; Morg exited the Star Sphere to retrieve his axe from Terrax.

(Silver Surfer III#81) - When Morg fell into the clutches of his enemy Tyrant, Galactus left Firelord and Air-Walker behind in the Star Sphere while he went to confront Tyrant.

(Silver Surfer III#107) - Tyrant came to the Star Sphere aboard a ship he'd taken from Morg so he could confront Galactus; the two began a conversation.

(Silver Surfer III#108) - When Tyrant started a fight with Galactus, Galactus confined him within the Star Sphere's energy converter but Tyrant escaped his bonds and continued their fight.

(Silver Surfer III#109) - Morg brought the Ultimate Nullifier from Taa II to the Star Sphere and used it to threaten Tyrant away from Galactus.

(Galactus the Devourer I#1) - Galactus brought his Star Sphere to another planet and consumed its energies, then ordered his newest herald Red Shift to find a new planet for him.

(Galactus the Devourer I#5) - Galactus exited the Star Sphere aboard another transport and set off to the Shi'ar homeworld to consume it.

(Galactus the Devourer I#6) - While Galactus engaged with the Shi'ar defenders, the Silver Surfer came to break into the Star Sphere. Robot drones imbued with the power cosmic ("Robot Defenders") attacked the Silver Surfer but he successfully unleashed a virus that began to break down the Star Sphere and eventually unleash the same energies used in the Elemental Converter against Galactus himself; these energies struck Galactus, killing him as the Star Sphere exploded.

(Thanos I#3 (fb)) - Alive again and his Star Sphere rebuilt, Galactus found energy readings that matched those he consumed from living planets. Unknown to him, he was being manipulated by the cosmic parasite Hunger.

(Thanos I#2) - From his Star Sphere, Galactus oversaw the consumption of Rigel-18's sun.

(Thanos I#3) - From the Star Sphere, Galactus completed his consumption of Rigel-18' sun, which he used to draw the remains of Rune from Reality-93060 and claim his Infinity Gem.

(Thanos I#4) - Galactus examined the Inifinity Gem aboard the Star Sphere, believing that if he assembled all six gems he could eliminate his hunger.

(Thanos I#5) - As Galactus attempted to wield the Infinity Gems to cure his hunger he was confronted by Thanos, who tried to warn him he was being manipulated. The two fought inside the Star Sphere but failed to prevent the manifestation of Hunger, who destroyed the Star Sphere.

(Thanos I#11) - The Star Sphere having been again rebuilt, it hovered nearby as Galactus consumed another planet.

(Thanos I#12) - While Galactus' feeding process was still incomplete, the Star Sphere was breached by his former herald the Fallen One, who attempted to gain revenge on Galactus but was bested by Thanos.

(Fantastic Four III#520) - Galactus made the Human Torch his herald and brought him to the Star Sphere. The Torch made a brief examination of the Star Sphere's interior before being sent out to confront Karrragan the Unforgiving, one of his enemies.

(Fantastic Four III#521) - Galactus piloted the Star Sphere into the Brum Nebula to consume a planet there. After the Human Torch was bested by the planet's defenders, Galactus teleported him back into the Star Sphere.

(Fantastic Four III#522) - The rest of the Fantastic Four and Quasar attacked the Star Sphere and caused Galactus to (temporarily) revert to his mortal form as Galan.

(Fantastic Four III#545) - Galactus piloted his Star Sphere to find Epoch, whom he intended to consume, but was barred by the Fantastic Four and Gravity (Greg Willis).

(Chaos War I#4) - While battling Mikaboshi's forces, Galactus summoned a Punisher from the Star Sphere to defend him while he attempted to capture Mikaboshi in an artificial wormhole.

(Fantastic Four III#585) - Galactus piloted the Star Sphere to Earth to question Mister Fantastic about the recent discovery of his own corpse, caused by interaction with a future timeline on the "Nu-World" planet. Wanting to learn more about Nu-World, Galactus brought Mister Fantastic aboard the Star Sphere then transported him to Taa II.

(Fantastic Four III#586) - Galactus departed Taa II aboard the Star Sphere so he could examine Nu-World. Galactus determined he would prevent his future death by consuming Nu-World.

(Silver Surfer VI#2) - After stealing the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic, the High Evolutionary used it to summon the Star Sphere to Earth, causing it to crash in Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert. As the High Evolutionary began to examine the Star Sphere he caused it to begin applying its Elemental Converter process on the Earth, causing it to reverse its normal function and instead begin terraforming the desert into a forest.

(Silver Surfer VI#3) - The Star Sphere continued to convert the Chihuahuan Desert.

(Silver Surfer VI#4) - The Future Foundation halted the Star Sphere's effects upon the Chihuahuan Desert, so the High Evolutionary relocated the Star Sphere to Earth's moon and began terraforming it.

(Silver Surfer VI#5) - Sensing what the High Evolutionary had done, Galactus confronted him but ultimately permitted him to keep the Star Sphere and set off into space to find uses for it.

(Unbeatable Squirrel Girl I#2) - Having apparently constructed a replacement Star Sphere, Galactus began piloting it back to Earth.

(Unbeatable Squirrel Girl I#3) - Squirrel Girl and her companion Tippy-Toe journeyed to the moon and summoned Galactus to exit the Star Sphere and face them.

(Unbeatable Squirrel Girl I#4 (fb)) - Squirrel Girl and Tippy-Toe snuck aboard the Star Sphere and hacked Galactus' computer, then located a planet full of nuts to satisfy his hunger.

    As the history above bears out, the Star Sphere appears and disappears from stories as needed; Galactus sometimes teleports (as he did in Fantastic Four I#50 to exit Earth) so the Star Sphere isn't always shown. It's also become common in some stories for Galactus to travel aboard Taa II instead of the Star Sphere (there's also some confusion in that the Star Sphere is sometimes called a "world-ship," which is more properly applied to Taa II).

    In the Ultimate Nullifier's first appearance, it was aboard Taa II and usually in stories resides there when seen; suddenly in Silver Surfer III#18, it was aboard the Star Sphere - the Invisible Woman even remarked it was in the same place as before, despite the vessel's destruction in Secret Wars I#9 - which is totally wrong, Galactus consumed Taa II in that story, not the Star Sphere. Consequently, since that story, the Ultimate Nullifier is sometimes on Taa II, sometimes on the Star Sphere.

    The Star Sphere was Galactus' choice of travel in his first appearance but when Kirby brought him back in Fantastic Four I#74 he had a different vessel with wings and a large tube that extended from the middle of the craft; Kirby used that vessel in all of the Galactus stories he drew from then on and that vessel has a lot of appearances of its own - to the extent that when Firelord's origin was redrawn in Uncanny Origins I#4 it used the winged vessel instead of the Star Sphere! Galactus the Devourer I#5 revealed that the winged vessel docks inside of the Star Sphere.

    The Star Sphere was featured as a Deadpool trading card in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl I#2.

    The Star Sphere was seen in the retelling of Fantastic Four I#48-50 in Reckoning War: Trial of the Watcher I#1, but no new information was added.

ROBOT DEFENDERS

In addition to various models of the Punisher robot, the Star Sphere is equipped with defense drones called "Robot Defenders." These humanoid constructs were infused with the Power Cosmic by Galactus and were capable of overwhelming heralds. The Robot Defenders could phase themselves intangible to prevent injury to their forms and could emit blasts of the Power Cosmic from their chests. Five Robot Defenders assaulted the Silver Sufer when he used a probe to unleash a virus into the Star Sphere. Although initially their superior numbers enabled the Robot Defenders to fend off the Silver Surfer, he ultimately overpowered and destroyed them.

UB-747

UB-747 was a non-humanoid drone employed by Galactus aboard the Star Sphere. At one time, he directed it to place a captured Infinity Gem into a Focusing Crux he had built to harness its power.
