Emotionally disturbed from taunts she received in her youth and resentful from bad relationships, she came to hate men and drew them into romantic situations before ambushing and killing them with a knife.
She committed her murders during her
menstrual period, and she targeted lonely, overweight men.

Swearing that such boys would regret making her life hell, she used exercise, plastic surgery, liposuction, cosmetology, etc. to make herself more beautiful, and she changed her name to Monique Spenser (at least professionally, if not legally). When she was in front of the camera, she imagined the boys apologizing for their treatment of her, and she figured that men would treat her better. She had a number of bad relationships, and she came to feel like men were all bad. (Hollywood Superstars#2 (fb) - BTS) - By 1991, Monique had been an actress for 12 years and had worked in eight movies, including "Beach Party Massacre," "Murder Academy II" and "Hacker Squadron." When she saw herself in "Hacker
Squadron" with
the audience cheering as she was hacked up, this apparently gave
her
the idea of doing the same thing to men. (Hollywood Superstars#2 (fb)

BTS) - Every month for three months, when she was having her
menstrual
period, Monique hooked up with an overweight, lonely guy. (Hollywood Superstars#2 (fb) - BTS) - Apparently considering that the murders were not bloody enough, Monique covered her victims in corn syrup-based "stage blood." (Hollywood Superstars#2) -
The
next month, waiting at a bar, Monique met and flirted with a
recently
dumped guy named Artie(?), went back to his apartment, got into
bed
with him and then suddenly pulled out a knife and slew him. (Hollywood Superstars#2 - BTS) - Following the news of the fourth person slain by an unidentified female serial killer, private investigator Jerry Naylor was concerned about his overweight and lonely partner, Leo Haney. |

In the parking lot, she found
the Melody, who had
had a failed audition had additionally had all four tires from
her car
stolen. She offered to give her a lift back to her apartment, en
route
telling her that it was probably men who had done this to her. Overhearing that Melody could
not get an advance
on her salary from her boss, Monique considered that Melody was
young
and still thought that men would be there for her when she
needed them.
She subsequently told Melody that she had thought that being an
actress
would get men to treat her better, but that they still treated
her
badly, just like when she was an "ugly little kid." Melody
suggested
that maybe she was seeking out the same kind of guy without
knowing it,
but she quickly apologized after Monique gave her a harsh stare.
Still thinking that Monique
needed to meet
someone nice, she brought her to work and introduced her to Leo,
who
quickly impressed her by recognizing her and naming a few of her
movies. (Hollywood Superstars#2 - BTS) - After swearing him to secrecy, Lt. Gresham informed Jerry about both the corn syrup-based "stage blood" and the menstrual blood found at each site, further noting that the murders were almost 30 days apart and that she was about due again that night. A former stunt man familiar with the film industry, Jerry compiled a list of places that carried "stage blood" for Lt. Gresham to send his men to investigate. (Hollywood Superstars#2) -
Monique and Leo made a date for that night. (Hollywood Superstars#2 -
BTS) - Leo repeatedly told Jerry he was going out with Monique
Spenser. (Hollywood Superstars#2 - BTS) - Lt. Gresham's men checked out women who had bought stage blood, but they were unable to locate Ethel Rotblatt. (Hollywood Superstars#2) -
Monique was in the bathtub when Leo called and what she wanted
for
dinner. She told that she was dieting as she had gained 3 oz.
that
week, but she further noted that the bathtub was wonderful and
that it
was a shame to have to get out and put on clothes; she told him
to just
come over. (Hollywood Superstars#2 - BTS) - While Leo was super-excited, Jerry reminded him about the slasher he was following, but Leo assured him that Monique was an angel. As Melody had noted wanting to read up on Monique's career, Leo gave her a book he thought had some stuff on her; having not read it yet himself, he asked her to give it back to him the next day. (Hollywood Superstars#2) -
Monique got into a cocktail dress and also picked out a knife. Monique caught Leo as he headed
back down her
stairs, too nervous to ring her bell. Hugging and kissing him,
she
invited him into her apartment. After he told her he had seen
all of
her movies and that he -- and any other living man -- found her
beautiful, she told him that if he got close, he would see that
she was
not beautiful and would hate her like the rest of the men.
Regardless,
she slipped into some lingerie. (Hollywood Superstars#2 - BTS) - Meanwhile, after Melody told him that she had changed her name from Patricia, Jerry had Melody check the book Leo lent her, and she informed him that Monique's real name was Ethel Rotblatt. While Melody could not remember where she lived, Jerry called the last number used on Leo's phone and pretended to work for a director who wanted to deliver a script to her, and she told him her address. (Hollywood Superstars#2) - Having gotten Leo naked in bed and having stripped off her negligee, Monique again asked Leo if he would want her if she were fat and homely, after which she told him that he had made her become what she was. Leo started to suggest they could just go to dinner to learn more about each other, but Monique nonetheless charged him with the knife. As Leo struggled to hold her off, Jerry rushed in, knocked the knife out of her hand, wrapped her in the blanket and had Melody call Lt. Gresham. By the time the police had
arrived, Monique had
confessed to all of the murders, noting that when she saw
herself in
"Hacker Squadron" with the audience cheering as she was hacked
up, she
decided to make herself into something they could love but
wondered why
they did not love her. |

creator-owned Epic Imprint.
As a creator owned character
from Epic, it is unlikely that this story was intended to be part of
Reality-616, but there's also nothing to exclude it...the events
involved a small number of people in a localized rural area.. There's
no
reason it could not have taken place in 1991, which due to Marvel's
sliding timescale in is over 20 years and counting before the Fantastic
Four's space flight.
