newspaper reporter "Scoop" Smith came up with an idea for a feature on
a day in the life of a typical American teenager.
(My Girl Pearl#8/9) - Scoop approached his boss (presumably editor) about his idea, who readily approved it. Unsure where to find such a typical teenager, Scoop randomly chose a name from the phone book: Pearl Dimly (whose simple-minded and literal interpretations often led to comedic confusion). Scoop went to Pearl's address and met her clever sister Shirl, who didn't intervene with the journalist's questions. Pearl muddled the answers and kept mispronouncing Scoop's name. Scoop politely shifted the conversation to include her boyfriend. They caught the bus, where Scoop saw Pearl's confusion cause mayhem with the bus driver. The pair soon arrived and met her beau Flash Grogan. Scoop tried get a handle on their behavior, but Pearl and Flash's simple-mindedness matched each other, bewildering and agitating Scoop further. Flustered, the journalist stormed off, declaring they should be comic book characters.
