History:

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb) - BTS / Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#3 (fb) - BTS) - Eurth was created by the Shaper of Worlds, using input from the Four Muses (Glorian, Prester John, Stranger, Tim) as a trial world. Eternity, Infinity, and the Living Tribunal agreed that the world was acceptable and thus brought it into permanent existence.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb)) - Four and twenty years ago, a young squire named St'vaan petitioned to become a monk. Moved by his devotion, the monks gave him a potion and sent him on a quest to find the enchanted shield called Excelsior. During his quest, he came upon the Lady of Liberty, who bestowed upon him the shield and the mystic orb called the Heart of Avalon. When St'vaan awoke, he found himself bestowed with the peak of human vitality. In the years thatsmashtroll-greenskyn-eurth-acats1-glassshatter followed, he became Captain Avalon and eventually the King of Avalon. He also gathered together avatars from across Eurth and its many races to form the Champions of the Realm.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb) - BTS) - In years past, Greenskyn Smashtroll was a Champion of the Realm, and the realm owed him much for his services.

smashtroll-greenskyn-eurth-acats1-draghex(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#3 (fb) - BTS) <Thirty years before the main story> - During the Worldwar, three nations joined together as the Z'axis. Avalon and the Legion of Liberty stood against the Z'axis. After many battles, Avalon vanquished the Z'axis, led by their general Zymo. From that day forward, Zymo referred to himself as the Dreadlord and vowed revenge. Greenskyn may or may not have been involved in this conflict.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb) - BTS) - Under unrevealed circumstances, Greenskyn's service to the realm cost him the lives of his wife and their unborn child.

Smashtroll was eventually afflicted with "the demons of drink."

He descended into heavily drinking alcohol, and he came to be considered a menace by more recent Champions.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb)) - In the market square, an intoxicated Greenskyn Smashtroll became irate as a barkeep refused to serve him more Xenexian ale. Modern Champions of the Realm members Blackthorn, Swift and Witchfire tried to convince Greenskyn that he had had enough, but he swatted them aside.

When he pounded on the bar and demanded more, the barkeep gave him a pint and told him it was on the house. However, as the nearly drooling Smashtroll picked up the glass, Blackthorn shattered the glass and -- with Skorch and Merman having joined them -- told him it was closing time.

Greenskyn asked why these paladins couldn't leave him alone, insisting him that he needed no puny humans to tell him how to drink. Shattering the bar with one hand, he shouted that Smashtroll had the strongest thirst there was. None present realized that the cosmic Stranger posed as a mortal and observed this conflict.

Blackthorn futilely struck Smashtroll with multiple arrows while Swift struck Smashtroll repeated to little effect. Appreciating that it would take more than physical force to defeat this brute, Witchfire cast a hex, and Smashtroll at least perceived that he was struggling with a dragon that sat on his doorstep in his nightmares. smashtroll-greenskyn-eurth-acats1-shame

Beating his fist to the ground and shouting, "Begone!" Smashtroll presumably knocked Witchfire off-balance and disrupted her hex. As Skorch flew around Greenskyn and Merman flew down and kicked him in the head, King St'vaan commanded all present to "cease this madness!"

Noting that they were all surrounded by innocents who could have been killed or maimed by their recklessness, St'vaan asked Greenskyn where was his honor now. Shamed at his actions in the presence of his king and old ally, Smashtroll struggled to speak but ultimately collapsed to the ground, presumably overcome by his intoxication. St'vaan advised the others that Greenskyn would pose no danger to anyone for some time, although they could not leave him to mercy of the elements.

St'vaan instructed that they would have to transport him to the castle and find him the stoutest bed. As Smashtroll snored away, Swift considered that that meant they would have to carry him, which meant walking, which he hated. St'vaan further instructed the others to be gentle with him and to remember that Smashtroll, too, was once a Champion of the Realm.

As they returned to the castle, apparently with Merman, Skorch and Swift having supported the unconscious or barely conscious Greenskyn, Blackthorn argued that this was an ill-considered idea, as Smashtroll was a menace, and he pointed out the risk of his running amok inside the castle. St'vaan cut Blackthorn off, telling him that it was a risk that he was willing to take. He further advised Blackthorn that he had not known Greenskyn in his better days, but that the realm owed him much. He started to note how Greenskyn's service had cost him his wife and their unborn child, but then he stopped, noting that it was not his tale to tell.smashtroll-greenskyn-eurth-acats1-carried

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb) - BTS) - St'vaan subsequently went to the sanctum of Duke Ctranj, court magician, asking if there might be sorcerous means to drive the demons of drink from Greenskyn. Ctranj replied that it was a most difficult and vexing malady, and that despite all of his potions and spells, it was not always possible to cure a disease of the spirit. Nonetheless, Ctranj assured St'vaan that he would do his best.

Further discussions were interrupted by screams as the Black Blade slew St'vaan's wife, Sharaan, abducted his son and stole the mystic orb known as the Heart of Avalon.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#1 (fb)) - The now awakened Greenskyn was present alongside some of the Champions as St'vaan ordered for a call to be sent out to all Champions of the Realm, past and present, to assemble at the castle to recover the young prince and the Heart of Avalon. When St'vaan proclaimed that the enemies of Avalon would fall, Greenskyn and the others present cheered, "So say we all!"smashtroll-greenskyn-eurth-acats1-cheer

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#2-3 (fb) - BTS) -  Smashtroll apparently remained at Castle Avalon while the other Champions engaged the forces of Dreadlord (Z'ymo) and recovered St'vaan Jr. Captain Avalon traveled into the past to thwart Z'ymo, and both merged with their past selves, living out their previous lives.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#3) - A few years later, after Prester John completed his history lessons with young St'vaan and noted that his training must begin, Greenskyn stated that he would see to that: "The debt I owe his sire can never be repaid, but so long as I live, no harm will come to the boy. I will be his bodyguard and his teacher in the arts of war."

Greenskyn subsequently reported that young St'vaan learned quickly.

(Avataars: Covenant of the Shield#3 - BTS) - Prester John predicted that one day, young St'vaan would succeed in outmaneuvering Smashtroll and claim his father's shield, Excelsior...on that day, Captain Avalon would live again.

Comments: Created by Len Kaminski and Oscar Jimenez.

In case it's not abundantly obvious, Greenskyn Smashtroll is the counterpart of the Hulk on the world of Earth.

While the modern Champions did not know Greenskyn at his best, it is unrevealed how long ago he was a valued member of the Champions of the Realm. He may or may not have been active in the Worldwar, which was 30 years before the modern story where St'vaan Jr. started training. As St'vaan looked to be about 1-year-old in the flashback during which the majority of the story takes place and about 6-8-years-old at the end when he started training, I would think the Worldwar took place 22-24 years before the main flashback.

Eurth is stated to take place in the Earth-616 dimension in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and I'm likely the one who made that notation with editorial approval, but I think it may not be stated clearly. I think Eurth is certainly part of Reality-616, but whether it takes place in the same universe as Earth-616 as opposed to a pocket dimension/realm associated with Reality-616 is not clear to me.

Greenskyn Smashtroll previously had a sub-profile under the Eurth profile, originally published back 06/24/2004.

This profile was completed 12/10/2025, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
