THE SEA OF MIST

Classification: Extradimensional (Asgardian) body of water

Creator: Presumably Odin, Vili and Ve

User/Possessors: Loki (Loki Laufeyson), Thor (Thor Odinson)

First Appearance: Avengers I#1 (September, 1963)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Sea of Mist is a typical sea fit for sailing. In its muddy, more shallow section, the Sea of Mist contains tangle roots that expand and grow to trap most anyone attempting to row through that area and the Isle of Silence, which is used primarily for the exile of Asgardian criminals, sits within the Sea of Mist.

History:
(Avengers I#1) - From the Isle of Silence in the Sea of Mist, Asgardian god Loki plotted revenge against his half-brother Thor and as events unfolded regarding the monstrous Hulk, Thor began to suspect Loki's involvement and asked permission from the All-Father Odin to visit Loki. Odin granted Thor's request and Thor soon set out across the Sea of Mist via boat.

(Avengers: The Origin#3) - Shortly after entering the Sea of Mist, Thor admitted that he could already feel Loki's presence there.

(Avengers I#1 / Avengers: The Origin#3) - Fighting his way through tangle roots seemingly planted in the Sea, Thor soon made his way to the open Sea and saw the Isle of Silence in the distance. When the distant fiery mountain on the Isle of Silence began spewing volcanic gas globules capable of sapping strength, Thor was forced to dive into the Sea of Mist to avoid the globules despite tentacles emerging from all sides of his boat. While Thor's cape washed up on the shores of the Isle of Silence, Thor secretly remained underwater in the Sea, hidden beneath the remnants of his boat, and he traveled to the Isle, eventually making a dramatic arrival in front of Loki inside of a giant water spout.

Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.

The Marvel Database Wiki page lists the Sea of Mist as appearing in a recap in Avengers I#150. Avengers I#150 does recap the events of Avengers I#1 but it does not actually show the Sea of Mist. It shows one panel of Thor fighting Loki on the Isle of Silence and sure, the Isle of Silence is IN the Sea of Mist but the actual Sea is nowhere to be seen or mentioned in that issue that I could see. Therefore, I won't be including that issue as an appearance of the Sea of Mist. Similarly, one would think the Sea of Mist would appear more often whenever the Isle of Silence is seen but in most of the Isle's appearances, we only see the landmass of the island and not the body of water around it. Sure, one could say that the Sea of Mist is at least BTS in every Isle of Silence appearance but for the purposes of this profile, I am only covering the actual appearances or mentions of the Sea itself, especially since there is already a profile of the Isle of Silence itself, as linked above.

Avengers I#1 refers to the area as "the Sea of Mist" but Avengers: The Origin#3 refers to it as "the Sea of Mists" plural...I suppose the names could be interchangeable.
