History: (Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord
podcast episode "Chapter 3: Blood Farmer" (fb)) - Red Crotter grew up
in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a city which as a child he experienced
being hit by a tornado. As he grew up, he came to work at an
agricultural firm, married Angie and had a daughter, Megan.
On what would become known as the
V-Day, Red took his 4-year old daughter Megan with him to work. While
on a country road, she spotted two figured battling in the sky. Red
recognized one as Iron Man (Tony Stark) from the news, while the other
wore a red cape and had a devil-ish appearance. Red switched on the
radio and heard news of attacks and heroes going down all over the
country. Red immediately took Megan back home and followed survival
protocols. Later that afternoon, the nearby Chamberlin nuclear reactor
went into a catastrophic meltdown.
By the time the fighting had settled down, the familiar heroes and security institutions were gone, and what was once the United States had been carved up by the villains who had emerged victorious. What used to be the Midwest and the Great Plains became the Wastelands, ruled by Doom from Doomwood. Over the following years, Red Crotter lost both Angie and Megan to radiation-induced cancer. He continued to maintain and expand his farmland through drought, blight, and ever-increasing taxes. By the time 30 years had passed since the V-Day, Red had secretly joined the Second Dawn, an underground resistance against Doom's rule.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 2: The Wastelands" (fb)) - On a tax day, Red Crotter made a trip to Outpost 13 to pay his due of what he owed to Doom. However, on his way there Red was robbed by Ghost Riders who took everything he had. Unable to pay his taxes, Crotter went to a bar where he drank in solitude on a tab until a newcomer started speaking out against Doom. Red dragged the man -- who introduced himself as Star-Lord (Peter Quill) -- away from the crowd to prevent him from attracting attention. The two men drank together and reminisced about the past until Quill made fun of the patron known as Rattlesnake Pete. This led to a fight, which Quill and Crotter lost, ending up in the local jail. They were broken out by Quill's associates Rocket Racoon and Cora, a Rigellian Recorder. Both Peter Quill and Red Crotter were declared wanted fugitives, accused of failure to file taxes, destruction of property and general disturbance.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 2: The Wastelands") - Red Crotter took Star-Lord, Rocket, and Cora back to his farm in his pickup truck. Fearing pursuit, Crotter refused to stop for any reason, and Cora used her seismographic sensors to determine that they were indeed pursued, but not by the men Crotter feared. The horse-riding Ghost Riders have caught up with them, and Crotter tried yelling to them that they had robbed him already. Rocket Raccoon wasted no time and opened fire, prompting a return volley of arrows on fire in return. One flaming arrow hit the truck, and Crotter drove away, while Rocket shot back at their pursuers until they retreated.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 3: Blood Farmer") - The group reached Red Crotter's farm by nightfall, and Quill explained that he and Rocket had to get to Doomwood. The group spent the night in a tense wait, expecting an attack, though Red was confident that their pursuers would wait until dawn. At first light, Rocket wanted to leave, but Quill insisted on shoring up Crotter's defenses first. Red took Cora aside and, trusting that she could recall in case Quill forgot, told her that in Doomwood they needed to find his contact, Sebastian Warn. Cora's seismographic sensors indicated horses approaching, and everyone barricaded inside the farmhouse. A posse of five, led by Rattlesnake Pete, approached and demanded Red pay the taxes he owed. Red instead fired a "warning" shot which hit Pete in the leg. A firefight ensued and, unprepared for Rocket Raccoon's ferocity with firearms, the five assailants were all wounded and fled on foot. Star-Lord, Rocket, and Cora took their horses, which Crotter noted had been badly mistreated. Red gifted Quill his grandfather's pistols and warned him to stay away from Kraven while out in the Wastelands before Quill, Rocket, and Cora headed to Doomwood on horseback.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 8: Buried" (fb)) - As Crotter had expected, scaring off Pete did not end his troubles. An armed posse of bounty hunters raided his farm at night, and though Red fired at them until his arms went numb, he was eventually overwhelmed. He was stripped, tied down, and forced to watch as the bandits burned down his farm and everything he owned. However, the bounty hunters themselves were in turn ambushed by the Ghost Riders, who emerged from the darkness on horseback and drove them off. They untied Red and asked if he wanted to join them. Crotter not only agreed, but also persuaded the Ghost Riders to ally with the Second Dawn, significantly boosting the ranks of the rebellion.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 8: Buried") - Days later, Red Crotter again ran into Star-Lord, Rocket, and Cora, who by now were also working with the Second Dawn through Joanna Forge and the White Queen. After catching up with them, Red joined the Ghost Riders in a diversion attack meant to draw the Doombots away from Doom's palace so that a reprogrammed unit could be remotely piloted inside. They hit their target right on time and successfully accomplished their mission.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 9: Kraven's Hunt") - Star-Lord and Rocket were captured by Kraven, who forced them to race him to the Chamberlin reactor, the location of the cosmic artifact known as the Black Vortex. The White Queen addressed her entire rebellion and stressed the need for Quill and Rocket to reach the reactor before Kraven. The Ghost Riders were tasked with riding into the radioactive zone and intercepting Kraven at any cost. Cora noted that the radiation from the reactor would likely bring on deathly cancer, but Red and the others accepted the mission nonetheless.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 10: Dawn and Doom") - The horse-mounted Ghost Riders easily caught up to Kraven but did not find him an easy prey. Kraven lunged himself at Red Crotter from a tree, throwing Red out of the saddle and breaking several of his bones. Kraven began cutting Red with a Bowie knife, torturing him for information about the rebellion. Crotter remained defiant, and Kraven casually cut out his eye, the entire scene streamed to the public by video drones flying overhead.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 10: Dawn and Doom" - BTS) - Kraven killed Rocket and reached the Black Vortex before Quill but was obliterated by its power. The people of Doomwood rose up and stormed Doom's stronghold. They found "Doom," but beneath the mask was not Victor von Doom but his press secretary Brandon Best, whom the mob lynched outside.
(Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord podcast episode "Chapter 10: Dawn and Doom") - Despite his severe injuries, Red Crotter was found alive, though nowhere near good health. He joined Star-Lord and the Second Dawn in the victory celebration party held at the Heaven and Hellfire club in Doomwood. Quill toasted for Red Crotter, saying that it was he who inspired both him and so many others to fight for freedom.
Comments: Created by Benjamin Percy.Red Crotter is a character in the Marvel's Wastelanders: Star Lord serial drama podcast, portrayed by the legendary actor Danny Glover. The podcast was adapted into the Wastelanders: Star-Lord novel, which maintains virtually the same story and dialog and for that reason is not considered a separate reality.
For lack of any visual depiction whatsoever, Glover's own appearance has been approximated for Red Crotter's characteristics, despite the role being voice-only.
To clarify, "Doom" that ruled the Wastelands from Doomwood was in fact his press secretary Brandon Best the entire time, though nobody suspected it until he was unmasked. The true Victor von Doom was elsewhere ever since the V-Day 30 years ago; his fate would be revealed in the sequel podcast Marvel's Wastelanders: Doom.
This profile was completed 08/17/2026, but its publication was
