Appearance: Gene Dogs#1 (October 1993)
Powers/Abilities: Panther possessed enhanced
agility and heightened senses. She may also have possessed a degree of
enhanced or even superhuman strength. She had a gene-chip implanted in
her cortex which further enhanced her abilities. Her powers and the chip
needed regular stabilizing using the same Gene Match Device that had
empowered her, or else she risked them failing and potentially going
insane.
Panther was a trained counter-terrorist
operative and soldier, proficient in jungle survival, the use of
multiple types of firearm and hand-to-hand combat even prior to her
enhancement.
Panther wore twin wrist gauntlets each
equipped with dual sharp blades extending like claws.
Height: 5'8" (by estimation - see comments)
Weight: 145 lbs. (by estimation)
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
History:
(Gene Dogs#1 (fb) - BTS) -
Corinne Walton was a member of Team Omega, an elite counter terrorist
squad assembled by Lars Dinkelbach, a.k.a. agent Eagle of S.T.O.R.M.
(Special Taskforce Omega Response Mandate), a Pan-European Defense and
Counter-Terrorism Organization. Eagle used them to fight a secret war
against worldwide crime and terrorism.
(Gene
Dogs#1 (fb)) - At some point (see comments)
she began dating fellow team member Tyr.
(Gene Dogs#1 (fb) -
BTS) - After an unrevealed length of time carrying out these
tasks Eagle sent Team Omega on a mission to
the African Congo to destroy a secret research base there.
Successfully bypassing the base's defenses the group set C4 explosive
charges and got out just ahead of their bombs blowing the place to
smithereens.
(Gene Dogs#1 (fb)) - However, as they raced through the jungle away from the exploding base they were attacked by a monstrous creature.
(Gene Dogs#1
(fb) - BTS) -The creature ripped the team to pieces before Tyr was
finally able to stop it. The team were treated for their injuries in
Nairobi, but the creature had carried an artificial virus that prevented
them from healing.
(Gene Dogs#1 (fb)) - They were rushed back to STORM
HQ in Wales, where scientist Sam Merrick put them through a
dangerous experimental process using his Gene Match Device to
identify the most compatible animals for each agent and then
re-write and re-combine their DNA patterns with the chosen animal,
implanting their genetic abilities and heightened natural talents
into the host. To support this gene-chips, bio-wetware computer
chips, were implanted into the subject's cortex, further enhancing
them. Corrine was the first of Team Omega to undergo the still
experimental process, and was backed up with feline DNA, emerging
completely healed.
(Gene Dogs#3 - BTS) - Though
the team members were not informed, every Gene Dog required to
undergo regular stabilizing procedures in the GMD or their human
aspects would reject the bio-implants and animal DNA that gave them
their powers, which would cause their powers to fail, and might even
drive them mad. Only Merrick knew how to carry these out.
(Gene Dogs#1 (fb) - BTS) - Corrine took on the codename Panther, and Team Omega was renamed the Gene Dogs. For the next year they underwent training and testing, though even by the end of that time Merrick was concerned that Panther was not ready for a field test.
Though not used for combat
missions, they did carry out other work, with Panther being assigned
to track down the location of Codename: Genetix with the intent to
eventually capture them.
(Gene Dogs#1) - Panther for her part
secretly felt she was too old to continue undertaking dangerous
missions, wishing she had quit after Africa, left the service and never
let Merrick put her through his machine.
(Gene
Dogs#2 - BTS) - At some point (see comments) Panther began
passing information to the villainous Mys-Tech organization,
allowing them to evade STORM's efforts to stop them.
(Gene
Dogs#1) - Despite Merrick's qualms, Panther and the others
were deployed for their first field mission to stop Otomocorp's
mercenaries, the Q7 Strikeforce, who were raiding the Nakasoni
Corporation's bio-tech research facility in Liverpool in order to steal
a new Gene Scanner. The Gene Dogs confronted the Strikeforce outside the
building and engaged them in combat, with Panther squaring off against
Banzai. After slicing his chest with her claws he activated a
chameleon-mode that was supposed to render him invisible to his foes,
but he had failed to reckon with Panther's enhanced senses; still able
to tell exactly where he was, she delivered a flying kick to his head.
The other Gene Dogs likewise were fairing well against the Strikeforce,
so Strikeforce member Tanuta Umbotha activated a device that made them
vanish, apparently temporarily phased out of sync with their
surroundings. Moments later Banzai reappeared behind Panther and before
she could react he stabbed her in the back, his sword going all the way
through her midriff. As she collapsed the other Strikeforce members
surrounded her, seeking to force her teammates to battle them head on if
they wanted to come to her aid. Despite knowing this was a trap, the
Gene Dogs raced into battle, but Panther realized her wound was too
severe and their help would come too late.
With sensors (either in her suit, or sent via
the gene-chip) sending telemetry back to STORM HQ, Merrick saw that
Panther's blood pressure was dangerously low and respiration was weak,
and realized the rest of the team wouldn't get to her on time and
ordered in back-up in the form of of a STORM assault squad with new Gene
Dog Cat. This assistance allowed the team to reach Panther and prompted
the Strikeforce to retreat. With Panther barely hanging on to life, Tyr
cradled her in his arms. Her last words to him were to apologize for not
being able to stick around, and tell him "it was fun though, wasn't...."
(Gene Dogs#2 - BTS) - Having discovered that Panther was a
Mys-Tech spy (see comments), Eagle informed Cat of this and told
her to use her telepathic skills to discover if any of the other Gene
Dogs were also traitors. Meanwhile the Gene Dogs acted on the
intelligence Panther had left behind and tracked down Genetix.
(Gene Dogs#3 - BTS) - Through her telepathy Cat confirmed
that all of the Gene Dogs bar Tyr were definitely not working with
Panther to spy for Mys-Tech; Tyr remained uncertain as his strong
psychic defenses had prevented scanning thus far. In order to make these
defenses drop, Cat let slip to the team about Panther's betrayal. Though
Tyr refused to believe her, his anger made his guard drop, and Cat was
able to confirm he had not been working with Panther on this front.
(Gene Dogs#4 - BTS) - Mys-Tech Board members Ormond
Wychwood and Algernon Crowe bemoaned that they had lost Panther, their
agent within STORM's inner cadre.
Comments: Created by John Freeman, David Taylor and Stephen Baskerville.
Panther's surname was revealed in Marvel Atlas#1's UK entry.
The flashback in Gene Dogs#1 confirms that
Marc Devlin already went by the codename Tyr back in Team Omega, which
suggests the other members also had codenames,. However, his codename
doesn't tie to the animal whose DNA he subsequently got sliced with,
unlike Panther and Kestrel. If they already had those
codenames, either they inspired Merrick's choice of animals to save the
two women or else it's a heck of a coincidence. Or perhaps the women
changed their codenames after being gene-spliced to reflect their new
abilities.
The origins of the creature that attacked
Team Omega in the Congo isn't provided, but given they had just blown up
a secret research lab it was probably either something that lab was
examining (perhaps an alien, Deviant monster, mutant, etc.) or else a
creation of said lab, especially as it carried an artificial
virus.
There are no good image options to compare Panther's height against someone else, let alone against a character with an established height. There is one image of her standing near Tyr in their Team Omega days that suggests she was a little shorter than him then, and another in the present that suggests she's several inches shorter than the transformed Tyr, and in turn Tyr has a pretty poor image in Revolutionary War Omega that suggests he's about the same height as some of the Super Soldiers (but much shorter than Gog), and we know from Super Soldiers#4 that the Dalton is slightly shorter than USAgent, who is 6'4". So extrapolating backwards, that makes Dalton perhaps 6'1" or 6'2", and transformed Tyr around the same height, so at a VERY ROUGH estimate, Panther was probably around 5'8".
It's not revealed when Tyr and Panther began
dating - it could have been back as far as before they both joined Team
Omega, during their time in that team, or after they became Gene Dogs.
Likewise the same holds true for how far back she had been working for
Mys-Tech - was she already a spy when she was recruited, or did that
come after she was in Team Omega or after she became a Gene Dog? And
while Eagle presumably only learned of this later, did he find out only
after she died, or had he discovered this before her death and was
perhaps planning to have Cat monitor her so he could learn what
information she had leaked and maybe use her to feed back
disinformation, only for her untimely demise to derail that?
