night_nurse-icon-upper-profilePowers/Abilities: While she presumably had some experience and skills in some regard as a nurse, she did not demonstrate those skills in this story.

    She was a "bad girl," a woman of high passion and strong emotion, a user of some sort of "space gas" inhalant drug, and she was willing to steal from her place of employment even at a potential risk of global security for someone with whom she was in love.

History:

night_nurse-icon-masking(Casanova#1 (fb) - BTS) - Casanova Quinn was presumably employed by Fabula Berserko to recover the Seychelle Ruby robot, which was instead destroyed by Buck McShane (second-in-command to Casanova's father, Cornelius Quinn, director of E.M.P.I.R.E.), who brought Casanova to the funeral for his sister, Zephyr.

    However, Zephyr's body had been destroyed and replaced by Zephyr's "Timeline 919" counterpart, an agent of W.A.S.T.E. (they seem to give a different description of what this stands for several times), who sent herself into "statisleep" and implanted a dimension-traveling device into Casanova's breastpocket when he leaned down to kiss what he thought was his dead sister.

    Apparently seeking the means to leverage his own survival from Berserko, Casanova resolved to obtain a tooth from McShane, who would be going to the E.M.P.I.R.E. medical facility for a cracked tooth.

(Casanova#1) - The Night Nurse was working the shift at the medical facility behind some undergound Asian restaurant (presumably a front/cover for E.M.P.I.R.E., when Casanova Quinn entered. As Casanova had stolen the E.M.P.I.R.E. pass from his father, Cornelius Quinn, the director of E.M.P.I.R.E., scanners identified Casanova as Cornelius, who had authorization to be there.

night_nurse-icon-kissing    The Night Nurse addressed him as Director Quinn, but he corrected her that he was the son of the director, noting that bioreaders always got their genomes mixed up.

    Casanova subsequently told her that he had a bit of a toothache and just needed a little something to get him through the night, but she told him that she was only the night nurse and that no one could see him tonight if it wasn't an emergency. He then asked her what if he wanted the night nurse to look at it, and further asked what time she got off tonight, to which she responded, "Not soon enough."

(Casanova#1 (fb) - BTS) - When she met Casanova, she thought, "Surely this was the man who would burn the world." And she loved every second. 

(Casanova#1/2 (fb)) - She called her boyfriend, Gil, and told him she thought they should see other people. She felt better going into something new and exciting free of any entanglements. She was confidant that Gil would be fine, as he was a good boy with a lot to offer some nice girl in the world, but that she was a bad girl.

(Casanova#1/2 (fb) - BTS) - Almost immediately after the phone call, Gil apparently hanged himself.

(Casanova#1) - As she and Casanova ate at an Asian restaurant (presumably the one in front of the medical facility), Casanova showed her a device that he had found buzzing inside his breast pocket.

    She thought that it looked like a weird lighter for smoking drugs, and she also could not feel it buzzing.

    She then asked if he got high, and they subsequently went back to her place.

(Casanova#1/2 (fb)) - In between inhaling some space gas the Night Nurse kept in a tank, she and Casanova had wild sex.night_nurse-icon-cassreturn

(Casanova#1) - Casanova asked her if Buck McShane got his teeth done in her office and wondered if he could do her a favor.

(Casanova#1 (fb) - BTS) - High on drugs and passion, the Night Nurse agreed to get McShane's tooth for him.

(Casanova#1/2 (fb)) - After McShane's tooth was pulled, the Night Nurse acquired it and gave it Casanova, and they continued their heated romance, and she fell in love with him.

(Casanova#1 - BTS) - During a subsequent confrontation with Berserko in a Helicasino, Casanova showed him the tooth and telling him that it had enough DNA to make hundreds of X.S.M.ILIES (presumably something akin to a clone or life model decoy) that could pass undetected into the heart of E.M.P.I.R.E.

    Casanova apparently gave the tooth to Berserko in exchange for his own survival, after which he jumped out of the Helicasino and then pushed the device, which transported him from his native "Timeline 909" into Timeline 919 (see comments).night_nurse-icon-prisoner

(Casanova#1/2 (fb)) - She was distraught when Casanova disappeared for six days.

(Casanova#1) - Casanova subsequently returned to his own timeline, appearing through a portal above and then landing in the Night Nurse's bed.

    She asked him what had happened, and he told her that he could not get out without giving up the tooth "and then things got weird." She queried whether they were going to make all those clones of McShane, but Casanova told her that that was what their tax dollars paid Cornelius Quinn and E.M.P.I.R.E. to worry about.

    He then told her to fire up "that space gas of yours -- I want to get seriously abstract," after which she told him that he had been gone for six days (although it had seemed like an instant to him).

(Casanova#1/2 (fb)) - Although Casanova was different, with colder skin, smelling like a different man and his whole body throbbing and buzzing as she touched, she was nonetheless happy as he was back, and she was in love. She felt time slow down and curl between them, and she blacked out.

    She woke up in Rio de Janeiro (presumably as a result of the extradimensional energies with which Casanova had been impregnated), which was in flames as a result of rampaging from McShane X.S.M.ILIES. Apparently aware of her involvement in the creation of the X.S.M.ILIES, agents of E.M.P.I.R.E. then kicked down her door, took her into custody and then put her in a cell, where she was identified as Prisoner 26084.

night_nurse-icon-uncuffed(Casanova#1/2) - Wearing a bag over her head, the Night Nurse was taken into a room with armed guards, given a cigarette and asked if she had any last words, at which point she detailed her involvement with Casanova Quinn.

    When she was done, it was Casanova who removed her mask, clarifying that there had been a terrible misunderstanding and that she was free to go with the apologies of E.M.P.I.R.E. (of which he was now a part). He told her it was nice to see her again as he departed, and as the guard unlocked her handcuffs, she felt feelings of love for Casanova again...

Comments: Created by Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba for Image Comics;
    the story was subsequently reprinted with a new story by Marvel under the creator-owned Icon imprint.

    I'm not sure that she was called the Night Nurse as opposed to that just being her job title, but she didn't get any other name...and it would have been so easy to give her a name, especially in that second story that showed everything from her perspective.

    The Icon character is a modern day spy/adventurer called Casanova Quinn. It also involves SF and multiversal stuff, and has got an annoyingly fragmented publication history. It started at Image for 14 issues, then Icon reprinted some of those in their first Casanova title (it looks like Icon's #1-4 reprinted Image's #1-7) but also with some new secondary stories, and then reprinted the rest of the original series in their Casanova: Gula miniseries, again with at least one new secondary story, and then brand new stories in Casanova: Avaritia. And then Image got the series back and reprinted all (I think) of the stories in three trades. And then they published a new 8 part series, Casanova: Acedia. Oh, and the Icon series recolored the original Image stories, which seem to have been originally three colored - black, white and usually either blue or green tones.

    Like I said, it's multiversal. Casanova Quinn is from "Timeline 909" but ends up in Timeline 919, and sees the suspended animation (or pickled) bodies of his counterparts from 910, 911, 912, 913, 917 and 918 (there are apparently 11 in total, presumably including 909, but we don't see all of them). His father runs an agency called E.M.P.I.R.E., and looks generically Nick Fury-ish (no eye patch but with added handlebar mustache, but otherwise), including having a second in command who wears a bowler hat (but no handlebar mustache - presumably he lent that to his boss).

    Earth-909, - 912, -913, -917 and -919 have designations already with the Marvel Megaverse, so E.M.P.I.R.E., etc. presumably "Timeline 909," etc. uses a different numbering system than the Core Continuum Designations, or they are in a different Multiverse and there is some different "area code" sort of number...which actually makes really good sense to describe such numeric duplicates in creator-owned series, or for movies, etc.

   This profile was completed 01/17/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
