History:

(Battle I#68/4) - Lewis was a young soldier who was sent out to an unidentified Pacific island during World War II to participate in fighting against the Japanese forces who had occupied it. As Lewis and his squad arrived they passed another squad who had been on the island for a while. The battle-hardened veteran soldiers jeered at Lewis and his comrades, remarking they looked like "babies" and suggested they'd finish the war before Lewis and his squad saw any action.

Later that day, Lewis' lieutenant placed him on the first watch for guard duty during the night. The lieutenant cautioned Lewis to "look sharp but don't get nervous" and to avoid awakening the camp for no reason. As he began his watch, Lewis found himself growing agitated by the sudden darkness of a tropical night, but he resisted becoming more anxious.

Around 10 PM, Lewis thought he heard a noise but, remembering his lieutenant's instructions, was loathe to raise a false alarm. Suddenly, two Japanese soldiers jumped out from the jungle treeline. Lewis fought them in hand-to-hand combat and clubbed them both with the butt of his rifle. Just then, the rest of the Japanese patrol emerged from the jungle and Lewis opened fire on them. The sound roused the camp and soon the lieutenant and other soldiers came to the scene of the fighting, which Lewis had under control. The lieutenant noted the Japanese were hoping to ambush him and don his uniform to infiltrate U.S. lines. He congratulated Lewis, telling him he handled his first combat engagement like a veteran.

As Lewis continued the last hour of his watch, a band of veteran soldiers returned to camp and made fun of Lewis, whom they assumed still hadn't seen combat. When they suggested Lewis would freeze up if he ever saw a Japanese soldier, Lewis smiled and retorted, "I wouldn't bet on that!"
