History:

(Killmonger#1 (fb) - BTS) - Patricia Jackson was born in St. Louis, USA. At some point, she apparently clashed with Spider-Man and escaped (although how much direct interaction there was is at her word). She joined the employ of Kingpin as one of his enforcers in a small crew alongside Rook and King.

(Killmonger#1) -Vengeful Erik Killmonger sought to kill Klaw, but it would have interrupted a deal with Kingpin. Knight stopped Killmonger, knocked him out and he was taken before Kingpin, who dismissed him with a threat and warning. King dumped him by a river and covertly tracked Killmonger back to his hideout. Knight stayed outside while King offered Killmonger a place on his crew; he accepted. At their Long Island hideaway, Knight was cautious about letting Killmonger join, given his anger issues.

(Killmonger#2) - The four mercenaries went to a nightclub where Killmonger rejected what he thought were Knight's sultry advances. Later, they donned masks and massacred Kingpin's assigned targets. After, Knight looked after Rook as he healed. Kingpin set up a challenge between King's crew and Bullseye so that he would have only one assassin. There was an argument among the crew where Knight pushed to leave New York to retire, but Bullseye struck, killing Rook first.

(Killmonger#3) - King, Knight and Killmonger fled. They burned down their Long Island hideout.

(Killmonger#3 (fb) - BTS) - Knight secretly reached out to covert organization S.H.I.E.L.D. to offer information on Kingpin in return for safety. Black Widow was the S.H.I.E.L.D. contact and agreed.

(Killmonger#3) - Knight and Killmonger had sex. Afterward, Killmonger told her of Wakanda and she revealed she had a younger sister who wished she was from Wakanda. Knight left, pretending to get fake passports, after which.S.H.I.E.L.D. captured Killmonger.

(Killmonger#3 (fb) - BTS) - Black Widow had changed the terms and demanded King. Knight gained Killmonger's freedom for the capture of King.

(Killmonger#4 (fb)) - Knight negotiated with Black Widow for a fresh start with new names.

(Killmonger#3) - On a container ship at sea, Knight was there when Killmonger woke from sleeping gas and explained the situation to him. He pushed to save King, and promised to make her his queen when they escaped and he took control of Wakanda.

(Killmonger#4) - Knight and Killmonger went to King's remote hideout in Bulgaria and warned him of S.H.I.E.L.D. Killmonger offered haven in Wakanda but King refused, wishing to stay with his wife. Knight secretly signaled S.H.I.E.L.D., betraying them all. While Killmonger spoke with King, Knight took King's wife hostage to demand King's surrender, and armed freelancers soon arrived. A bloody fight followed in which only Killmonger and Knight survived. Knight declared she showed Killmonger mercy by not killing him and left to forge a new path, but Killmonger sought vengeance and raided King's gun stash.

(Killmonger#5) - One year passed and Patricia Jackson (no longer Knight) had set herself up in London with the Black Widow's help, but Killmonger found her. He had taken Jackson's sister hostage and blackmailed her into uploading a file onto S.H.I.E.L.D. computer servers that implicated her in crimes, although he had lied it was to find information on the Wakanda's ruler the Black Panther. Later, having already secretly killed her sister, Killmonger met Jackson and told her the truth. S.H.I.E.L.D. troops arrived to arrest them but Killmonger easily slaughtered them all before stabbing Jackson. To ensure his own escape, Killmonger also blew up the building.

And now, important comments from Snood...

OK, deep breath. The Killmonger series...in or out of Earth-616 continuity?

    I initially figured it was out and that it was totally a prequel to the movie. That art on some of the covers is completely consistent with that. However, tight analysis of the series doesn't generate any information I could see that would 100% refute it.
Let's start with the discussion from the experts at the Marvel Chronology Project:

First Issue:

• The mini takes place before Killmonger's first appearance in JA2 6 (September 1973).
• Wilson Fisk is Kingpin of New York. He's already Kingpin in his first appearance, ASM 50 (July 1967), so that's fine.
• Black Widow is in her classic look and is with SHIELD. Nick Fury recruited her in A 3 (March 1967), and she got her classic look in ASM 86 (July 1970), so that's fine.
• Bullseye is working for the Kingpin. Bullseye was hired to kill the Kingpin in DD 171, but Kingpin made him a better offer in DD 172 (June-July 1981), so that's... uh oh.
  
• Hell, Killmonger DIES in JA2 17 (September 1975), which is six years publication-wise before Bullseye starts working for Kingpin.
  

• Bullseye and Kingpin clearly know, or know of, one another in DD 171/172, so is there any reason why they couldn't have worked together earlier? Specialists like Bullseye would join and leave Kingpin's payroll all the time, especially when we add in Kingpin having given up control of the mobs prior to DD 171.
• Six years before the first time we saw him working for Kingpin, but like I said, any reason he couldn't have worked for him previously?
• I suppose it's possible. That would mean Bullseye was working for the Kingpin before his first published appearance.
• Looking at Bullseye's chronology, I just now noticed that the MCP is missing Bullseye's flashback in DD 131, where he's a soldier in Vietnam then a mercenary in Africa.
• Anyway, this mini would have to happen somewhere between comics from 1970 (ASM 86) and 1973 (JA2 6).
  
• That would mean one of Bullseye's first jobs after returning from Africa would be working for Kingpin, right?
• Seems workable to me--Snood.
  

• This mini also references Rise of the Black Panther #1-6, which itself can't fit with established continuity). That's not a huge problem, though. We could always squint and say this mini references something that Rise was already referencing (or whatever).
  

• Perhaps mostly similar events occurred in 616, minus the continuity-busting ones? Frankly, the referencing doesn't surprise me - writers frequently fail to realize what is and isn't canon, and thus unwittingly start dragging stuff previously considered non-canonical into the mainstream timeline (as opposed to those who do realize something isn't intended to be canon, but then choose to consciously change this).

• Killmonger allegedly didn't know how to get back to Wakanda until seeing the Black Panther with the Avengers (starting around Captain America I#100/Avengers I#51/52).
• The MCP lists the flashback in Jungle Action II#16 wherein N'Jadaka introduces himself to the Panther and is brought back to Wakanda as occurring between Captain America I#114 (which takes place after Avengers I#65) and Avengers I#68 (September, 1969). That makes good sense to me.
• The initial reference is: (Jungle Action II#7 (fb) - BTS) - The Panther brought N'Jadaka back to Wakanda "during that time we had trouble on Panther Island," after which N'Jadaka vanished into the wilderness.
• The only "Panther Island" encounter of which I'm aware is the one Fantastic Four Annual#5 (November, 1967)
  
• N'Jadaka was not in Fantastic Four Annual#5
• So, either he escaped before this or he was hanging out in the Panther's aircraft the whole time and escaped after they subsequently arrived in Wakanda.
• OR, there was another Panther Island adventure we've not yet seen
  
• The timing of Killmonger seeking out T'Challa would make it before the Widow assumed her classic costume (ASM 86 (July, 1970), as you note). It could have been an art error, or perhaps the Widow had clandestinely donned that costume before appearing publicly in it.
• That would also mean, to me, that the Kingpin was appearing somewhere around ASM50-68, prior to his going into hiding.
• On covers and dreams, at least, Killmonger is shown in his movie form, with all those scars representing kills.
• Minor bit of contradictory information:
• (Black Panther III#17 (fb) - BTS) - N'Jadaka became a teacher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
• In the Killmonger series, he was a fresh graduate and declined a job at MIT.
• However, as everyone "Between MIT and Silicon Valley" wanted him, maybe he got his graduate degree at MIT?
• He has the night school experiences with Venomm...maybe he went to night school for undergrad and then to MIT for his graduate degree?
• So...Klaw didn't assume his mutated form until the end of Fantastic Four I#52-53 (July-August, 1967).
• Yet, in Killmonger#1, we've got the mutated form of Klaw, complete with his sonic prosthetic device, targeted for assassination by Killmonger.
• It's not impossible, but since we've got N'Jadaka seeking out T'Challa in a story taking place before September, 1969, we've got 2 years real world time, which is maybe 4 months Marvel Time between Killmonger trying to take out Klaw (and being stopped by Knight/King/Rook) and Killmonger seeking out T'Challa.
• Between the end of #4 and the start of #5, a year goes by, during which time Killmonger grows to his full stature. Knowing that writers say a "year" all the time and we just rule it topical, that doesn't have to be the case, but some significant time lapses anyway.
• Additionally, while Killmonger (and Venomm) were reported to have vanished into the wilderness after arriving in Wakanda, Killmonger #5 shows Killmonger talking to T'Challa in central Wakanda by the palace. I guess he could have escaped into the palace afterwards?
• We also have Klaue giving N'Jadaka the name Erik. If he hated Klaue, it really seems unlikely Killmonger would keep a name Klaue gave him. Doesn't rule anything out, just not consistent with the character at all.
• Maybe this story is yet another case of "similar events happened in Reality-616" while this version is indeed the movie reality?
  
• Even that doesn't fit, because of the interaction between T'Challa and Killmonger at the end of #5...
• I liked the story...but is it Killmonger-616?
