History:
(Journey into Mystery I#33/2) - Paul Haines lived in a rundown mansion which had been in his family since before the Revolutionary War. Never having made a good living for himself, Paul bitterly resented his great-great grandfather Cedric, who had spent all of his money, leaving nothing but the family mansion for Paul's great-grandfather Albert to inherit. Paul thought if Cedric had been wiser about saving his money, he would have all the advantages of wealth in his own life.
When his wife Lenore implored him to forget about his grudge against Cedric and concentrate on his work as an inventor, Paul was struck by a sudden inspiration. Taking what money he had left, Paul spent a month working on a time machine. When he was finally ready to show it to Lenore, he demonstrated how he could see and hear events from the past. Lenore thought it would be a tremendous aid to historical research but Paul told her he had another use for the device - he could use it to eliminate someone in the past. He intended to kill his great-great grandfather Cedric at some point prior to 1780 when the family still had money.
Paul used the time machine to observe Cedric, who did indeed appear to be a spendthrift who spent his money lavishly. When Paul saw Cedric had placed $1 million into a strongbox he used the time machine to transport the strongbox into the present so he could spend the money himself. However, when he opened the strongbox he discovered all of the money was in Continental currecy, which became worthless shortly after 1780. Paul realized he was wrong to have held a grudge against his ancestor and Lenore helped him realize he hadn't been cheated out of an inheritance. Paul resolved that going forward he wouldn't look for something that wasn't his and instead would make good on his own.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Paul Haines should not be confused with:

Cedric Haines was Paul's great-great grandfather who lived in the 18th century. Cedric's son was Albert. Cedric was a spendthrift who wasted his money on frivolous pursuits. When Cedric died in 1780, he had nothing to leave Albert except his home. Paul always resented Cedric, thinking he'd cheated him out of the family fortune. Paul schemed to use his time machine to kill Cedric but instead stole a strongbox of $1 million from him; however, the money was all Continental currency which became worthless shortly after Cedric's death.
--Journey into Mystery I#33/2

Lenore Haines was Paul's wife. Lenore was faithful to Paul and believed in his genius but grew alarmed when he talked about using his time machine to kill his great-great grandfather Cedric. Ultimately Paul realized he was wrong to blame Cedric and Lenore helped him realize he could still make good on his own.
--Journey into Mystery I#33/2

The time machine Paul invented had a television screen which allowed him to see and hear events from the past. He claimed he could also use the machine to "eliminate" a person in the past, killing them. The device could also be used to bring objects from the past into the present. Paul used the time machine to observe his great-great grandfather Cedric and transported a strongbox of money from the past into the present.
