giant space
worm
(Negative Zone)
Real Name: Unrevealed (if any)
Identity/Class: Extradimensional
(Negative
Zone)
alien race (unidentified race, although it may also have been a
unique creature)
Occupation: Predator
Group Membership: None known
Affiliations: None known
Enemies: Doctor Doom
(Victor von Doom)
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: "Worm" (from Gornkai); "mindless vermin"
and "vile thing" (from Doom)
Base of Operations: An unspecified portion of the
Negative Zone
First Appearance: Doom: The
Emperor Returns#3 (March, 2002)
Powers/Abilities: The immense creature hid within
space debris, ambushing and consuming ships and their passengers that
passed nearby.
Its immense tentacles could surround
and restrain ships despite their thruster power.
The creature's caudal portion had a
length of body that terminated in numerous tentacles presumably used for
navigation (the Negative Zone's space was not always a frigid vacuum
like space in Earth's universe).
Like many creatures, its exterior was
significantly more durable than its internal organs; while Doom's blasts
did little damage to its maw, he could blast his way out through its
intestines and from the inside of its body much more easily.
Height: Approximately 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) in
length; its body diameter at its face appeared to be perhaps 25-30' in
diameter, with lengthy tentacles extending radially from around its maw
Weight: Unrevealed (incalculable given its unknown composition
Eyes: Unrevealed (if any)
Hair: None known
Distinguishing Features: Its cranial portion has approximately a dozen large tentacles
surrounding a maw with multiple concentric rows of teeth with numerous
smaller tentacles at the maw's center to pull prey into its mouth.
The creature's caudal portion had a
length of body that terminated in numerous tentacles.
History: (Doom:
The
Emperor Returns#2 - BTS) - Seeking to return to Earth from Franklin
Richards' Counter-Earth with power usurped from that latter world's
Franklin Richards' manifestation (and with the
Counter-Earth replicated form of Cynthia
von Doom), Doom traveled though a portal to
the Negative Zone. Doom's arrival was apparently detected by Gornkai and Hellscout.
(Doom: The Emperor Returns#3 (fb) -
BTS) - Having concealed itself with a ring of detritus, the giant worm
ambushed Doom's ship as it passed nearby, enwrapping the ship with its
tentacles. Doom exited the ship in space armor in an effort to fight off
the creature.
(Doom: The Emperor Returns#3) -
Ignoring Doom's warning to delay his journey at its
own peril, the creature wrapped Doom in its tentacles and pulled him
toward its maw. Resolving that even if he was ensnared, his mother would
be free, Doom
jettisoned
a pod containing her Counter-Earth replica. Blasting the creature
futilely, Doom warned the "vile thing" that it would find Doom a most
unpleasant repast, but it consumed him nonetheless.
Hellscout noted, "whatever
his motives for entering this cursed plane, they be as dust. He is food
for the worm and no more."
After Gornkai noted that Doom had jettisoned a pod
containing a humanoid lifeform in some kind of life-suspension, which was
traveling away at sub-light speed, Hellscout considered that the
stranger's machinations may not end with his death, and he and Gornkai
pursued the pod to be certain the intruder could not threaten the colony.

Soon after Gornkai and Hellscout's
departure, Doom blasted his way out of the giant worm creature, noting
that Doom meant death to those who thwart his will, for no matter how
brief a time.
It is unrevealed
whether the creature indeed perished or was able to heal itself, but it
was not seen nor referenced again, to the best of my knowledge.
Comments: Created
by Chuck Dixon and Leonardo Manco.
The creature attacking Doom wasn't
identified in story (beyond Hellscout calling it "the worm"), but I
think Abnuciavore is a good name, personally...
