GAMMA GRENADE BOMB

Classification: Terrestrial technology

Creator: Bruce Banner

User/Possessors: Chameleon (Dmitri Kravinoff)

First Appearance: Tales to Astonish I#62/2 (December, 1964)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Gamma Grenade Bomb is an extremely powerful explosive that emits a destructive blast of gamma rays. The gamma radiation contained in the bomb proved sufficient to transform the Hulk back into his alter ego of Bruce Banner. The bomb apparently did not have an activation switch but detonated on impact.

History:

(Tales to Astonish I#62/2) - When the Chameleon invaded Gamma Base on behalf of the Leader and disguised himself as Dr. Bruce Banner, he discovered Banner's notes for the Gamma Grenade Bomb along with a working prototype model. The Chameleon stole the notes and the grenade but was discovered by Betty Ross, who quickly surmised he was not the real Dr. Banner. Soon, the Hulk burst into the laboratory and threatened the Chameleon but the Chameleon held the Hulk at bay with the grenade; the Hulk dimly recalled the grenade's destructive power, so refrained from attacking him.

The Chameleon fled Gamma Base and abandoned Betty Ross in a Rocket Speed Velocity Test-Sled in the hopes of stalling the Hulk, but the Hulk soon caught up to him. As the Chameleon prepared to use the grenade in order to cover his escape, the Hulk overturned a concrete tank bed to provide shelter for nearby soldiers then threw himself upon the Gamma Grenade Bomb to smother its effects; there was an enormous blast of gamma radiation which caused the Hulk to transform back into Dr. Banner, but in the smoke and confusion caused by the explosion he was still able to maintain his secret identity. The Chameleon shielded himself from the blast beneath a large rock formation.
