History:
(Weirdworld II#3 (fb) - BTS)
- Eta was appointed to be the Watcher of Weirdworld (see comments),
originally a planet in another dimension abundant in magic and fantastic
beings, but which in the wake of the destruction and restoration of the
multiverse had become a patchwork realm composed of fragmented remains
of the original
Weirdworld mixed with remnants of other fantasy worlds such as
Polemachus and Crystalium.
When the Earth teen Becca Rodriguez became
stranded on Weirdworld after her plane flew through the Bermuda Triangle
and crashlanded there, Eta began tracking her activities, especially
after an artifact dubbed the Wuxian Seed (in actuality one of the
reality controlling Infinity Stones) fell into her possession, which
also drew the attention of Weirdworld's would-be tyrant, the witch
Morgan Le Fay. Unaware of Eta's spying, Becca teamed up with Goleta the
Wizardslayer and began a quest to reach the Fang Mountains as part of a
plan to get her home. Eta watched Becca ignoring
a warning not to go there as this would lead Morgan to wage war.
Goleta's vehicle, the Gloriana, offered the best chance to reach the
Mountains, so when it broke down and needed an Emerald Fuel Injector to
repair it Becca and Goleta visited Nakia the Grand Mechanic, but Nakia
refused to help them. However, an attack by one of Morgan's minions, the
Mammoth Inferno, provided Becca with a distraction, and while others
battled the beast, Becca slipped into Nakia's workshop to look for an
Injector.
(Weirdworld II#3)
- Witnessing Becca spotting a stash of Injectors, Eta appeared before
the girl just as Becca was about to take one, unsurprisingly startling
the teen. Recovering, Becca assumed Eta was going to sound the alarm and
tried to bluff her way out, insisting she wasn't doing anything wrong,
but Eta thwarted her with logic, querying why Becca was concerned about
being reported if she truly wasn't misbehaving? Sheepishly, Becca
admitted she was planning to steal one of the Injectors, and asked Eta
if she was a friend of Nakia's, but Eta identified herself as
Weirdworld's Watcher and made it clear she had no friends and was not
there to interfere, only to observe and record moments of great
importance. When Becca then asked if this moment was of such importance
Eta confirmed it was, since Becca was wearing the Wuxian Seed on a chain
around her neck. Eta then reiterated the warning that Becca going to the
Fang Mountains would prompt Morgan to go to war and change the course of
Weirdworld, Becca insisted she didn't know anything about that, and Eta
noted that she had now been warned twice about this outcome. Annoyed,
Becca turned back to take the Injector while asking Eta if giving
someone a guilt trip counted as interfering, but Eta vanished without
replying while Becca's back was turned.
(Star-Lord I#7 - BTS) - Eta and others tied to Weirdworld
appeared as holopieces in a board game played between Rocket Raccoon and
Groot.

Eta is probably named for the seventh letter
of the Greek alphabet, but I guess she might just be named after
Estimated Time of Arrival. Her name sounds like, but is spelled
differently from the Latin word for ages, aetas. I mention this one only
because of her fellow Watcher Ecce,
since ecce is the Latin for "Behold" - or more colloquially, "Look,"
which of course describes the Watchers' job.
How long has Eta been Weirdworld's Watcher?
The original version of Weirdworld was in a separate dimension, though
as far as we know still within the overall Reality-616, and had been
around for eons. We haven't seen any Watchers who keep an eye on other
dimensions within 616, just different planets and sectors in space
within the "regular" one, so we don't know either way if Watchers
normally monitor those - is there a Watcher assigned to Dormammu's Dark
Dimension? The point is, Eta might have been keeping an eye on
Weirdworld for countless millennia, but she might also be a recent
appointee, with Weirdworld only becoming of interest to her people when
it was brought into Earth's dimension and merged with other such fantasy
realms.
Most other Watchers are bald, including other females such as Ulana, Egma and Acitua. So why does Eta have a luscious swathe of hair? Is Watcher glabrousness an aesthetic, an overly enthusiastic tonsure, and Eta is a wannabe rebel rejecting depilation? Or is phalacrosis an indicator of age within the Watchers' species, and Eta is as I speculate above a recently appointed Watcher, a youth on her first assignment who has yet to suffer from her inevitable alopecia? As far as I can recall the only other Watcher we've seen with hair is Zoma, who has receding hair and a beard - to human eyes he looks old because his hair is white and retreating but since Eta also has white hair that might just be the norm for Watchers, so maybe Zoma is also just a callow youth by Watcher standards, only just starting to lose his locks and growing a beard in a desperate attempt to deny his inescapable chrome dome fate?
Though it was her job to watch Weirdworld
there's no reason to assume that's where she was normally based; after
all, Uatu monitors Earth, but he's not based there but rather on the
Moon.
