Earth's moon was colonized.

patriotic fervor swept Earth.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#20: Greenberg the Vampire: "The Second Book of Genesis: A Novel: Prologue" (fb)) - At some point, Earth united under one banner, and all nations subsequently became nation-states loyal to one man: The First World President, Icharus Pusselweitz.
However, the uniting of the planet had
not erased international hatred, as "Soviets now hated the
American the way Texans hated New Yorkers, the way New Yorkers hated New
Jerseyites, and the way New Jerseyites hated themselves: It was a style
of hate more suited to siblings than strangers. In short: A hate more
intense and vicious than ever." In fact, the only thing standing the way
of a ghastly world holocaust was the fact all the nation states hated
the First World President more than they could ever hate each other --
and this focused contempt kept the teapot from boiling over. And that's
just the way Icharus Pusselweitz, who was a political genius, wanted it.

most popular soft drink and surpassed marijuana, cocaine, and heroin as
the world's most popular escape from daily drudgery and despair.
(Marvel Graphic Novel#20: Greenberg the Vampire: "The Second Book of Genesis: A Novel: Prologue") - On September
1, the 7' tall robot named Fassbinder appeared on the White House lawn.
Fassbinder brought a message of grave importance from the Erac-Ondog, a
mysterious race of beings from beyond the galaxy's edge: The Erac-Ondog
were preparing for a grisly, bloody war with inhabitants of Earth (which
they knew as Koop). As the Erac-Ondog would arrive within seven Earth
months, he advised that the "Koopians" prepare for the coming slaughter.
Fassbinder then did a modified soft shoe, kicked up his metalloid heels,
and vanished in a blaze of rainbow light.
During the following weeks, Fassbinder
made appearances at the Kremlin, the Great Wall of China, the Eifel
Tower, Big Ben, and the Taj Mahal.
The public generally considered Fassbinder's threat to be a hoax until Fassbinder returned and reduced the White House, the Kremlin, the Great Wall of China, the Eifel Tower, Big Ben, and the Taj Mahal to steaming slag with a foul-smelling gas released from his metalloid anal egress; he explained that this was just to prove he was not kidding. Panic ensued: "The entire population of Planet Earth went bananas."

Thelonius Thussman was trapped in an out of control spaceship with a
buxom alien woman named Elvis Omus who possessed the Key to the Riddle
of the Universe. They were pursued by a fleet of Erac-Ondog starships
whose mission it was to kill Thussman and Omus.

This reality mirrors that of the novel
that was at least started by Oscar
Greenberg "The Second Book of Genesis: A Novel." Greenberg had
been unable to write a good story for some time, and both he and his
lover thought this novel was terrible, so I doubt that he finished it.
At some point and on some level, it was supposed to be a story about
God.
Oscar asked his lover, Denise, what she thought about
it, and she told him, "...It's got its
moments, hon, but overall -- it's a load of badly-written crap."
I for one would love to see the full
adventures of Thelonius Thussman...well, the circumstances that led to
his being on the spaceship with Elvis Omus and the Key to the Riddle of
the Universe.

I
think my thought at the time was to evoke a kind of Vonnegut-like space
adventure, with a little Woody Allen sprinkled in for good measure...but
it's been a long time, so the memory is hazy and I have no profound
insights to share. That little piece may have even been around
pre-GREENBERG. (It reads like something I might have written in my
early 20s.)
One
thing
I do remember: Erac-Ondog was the original name for the
(apparently) uncaring, god-like aliens in MOONSHADOW (the name
eventually became The G'l-Doses). Read it in reverse and you'll
see "God No Care"!

Obviously this story was written before the break up of the USSR, and it probably did not break up in this reality.

The first of presumably two or more wars between humanity and
the Martians, it resulted in a twisted
zeal (a patriotic fervor?) sweeping the planet. Humanity defeated the Martians in this and/or one or more of any subsequent wars. --Marvel Graphic Novel#20: Greenberg the Vampire Note: We don't know if this is the war in which Thelonius Rigornorti "whomped" the Martians, but that sounds like it would have been the final war...which could have been the second or higher war. The name "First Earth-Mars War" implies there was at least one subsequent war, but that is not necessarily the case. They could have anticipated more wars and just called it that, and then no other wars happened... Regardless, it would seem that defeating the Martians was not much a real challenge. |
