Luna DePaula was the manager of the Grind Stone, a cafe in Salem Center
which was frequently visited by the many mutant students and faculty
members of the Xavier Institute.
(New Mutants II#7 (fb) - BTS) - For an unrevealed amount of time Luna dated a girl who'd spend most of her time in the Grind Stone. The two eventually broke up for unrevealed reasons.
(New Mutants II#7) - Luna was seen working in the Grind Stone when the cafe was visited by Xavier Institute teacher Danielle Moonstar and her student David Alleyne. The duo discussed David's relationship to his roommate Josh Foley who'd previously worked alongside Donald Pierce. When Luna had prepared Moonstar's Oreo Crunch iced latte she proceeded to flirt with her much to Moonstar's surprise.
(New Mutants lI#8 - BTS) - The following weeks, Moonstar would regularly visit the Grind Stone.
(New Mutants lI#8) - Believing Luna would be the
perfect match for her friend Karma, she planned to bring her to the
Grind Stone, all while Karma wondered why they wouldn't just visit Harry's
as per usual. Moonstar then proceeded to introduce Karma to Luna, who
was working the front counter. Karma, however, felt offended her friend
would just randomly match her to the first lesbian she'd come across.
Trying to make her point, Karma just asked for a coffee. Luna, however,
seemed amused by the ordeal.
The following
morning, Luna arrived to open the Grind Stone when she noticed the
lights had been blown out, falsely believing the fuses to have burned
out. Luna continued to take the trash out when she was approached by a
homeless girl. The homeless girl was the Japanese Noriko Ashida, a
mutant looking for money to buy prescription drugs to help her control
her electrical abilities. Realizing the homeless girl could use help,
Luna approached Noriko when she accidentally discharged her electric
burst, seriously injuring Luna and rendering her unconscious.
(New Mutants lI#9 - BTS) - Although shocked by what had happened, Noriko proceeded to steal money from the Grind Stone to buy more narcotics.
(New Mutants lI#10 - BTS) - Luna was found and brought into Salem Center's General Hospital.
(New Mutants lI#9 - BTS) - Learning of the accident, David Alleyne quickly informed Moonstar, Karma and Wolfsbane that Luna had been hurt. Another student, Josh Foley then revealed he believed he knew who'd hurt Luna. Although forbidden to interfere, the students set out that night to go and find the homeless mutant.
(New Mutants lI#10) - While recovering in the hospital, Luna was visited by David Alleyne, Sofia Mantega and Laurie Collins. Surprised by their visit, Luna joked that she thought they were either very sweet of bucking for free coffee. However, when moments later the students' chaperone Karma entered the room, Luna immediately recalled her as the girl who just wanted coffee. The students then relayed how they went after Noriko.
(New Mutants lI#12 - BTS) - Discharged from the hospital, Luna returned to work at the Grind Stone.
(New Mutants lI#12) - When Luna made her way to the Grind Stone for her shift she was shocked to find the girl who'd hurt her sitting in front of the cafe, accompanied by Danielle Moonstar. Noriko had since gotten help from the Beast (Henry McCoy) who devised a pair of gauntlets for her that regulated her electrical intake and discharge. Noriko immediately apologized to Luna, explaining she'd been unable to control her mutant abilities. But when Luna replied that she didn't have to apologize, Noriko continued and admitting her theft and hoped she could work at the Grind Stone to repay her debt, Luna accepted after which she was put straight to work.
(New Mutants lI#13) - While at work, Luna was visited by a group of Xavier's teachers (the former New Mutants). Seeing the beautiful Luna, Sunspot quickly proclaimed his love only to be scolded by Karma. The smooth Sunspot continued to try to charm Luna, who, unaffected by his advances noted they should stick to coffee, referencing her initial encounter with Karma. Moments later, FBI agent Justin Pierce entered the Grind Stone to inform the mutants that Donald Pierce had escaped incarceration.
(New X-Men lI#1) - Wondering why Noriko continued to work after her shift had already ended, Luna checked up on the girl. However, when Luna asked if she shouldn't be in school for the orientation for the new semester, Noriko expressed she didn't want to go, asking if Luna couldn't tell her teachers she needed to work. Luna then leveled with the young mutant that she wasn't planning on getting into trouble with Noriko's faculty advisor and demanded she leave for school.
(New X-Men lI#12) - Luna was seen working in the Grind Stone when Xavier Institute teachers Moonstar and Wolfsbane met up with student David Alleyne.
(New X-Men lI#33) - While working a late shift at the Grind Stone, Luna was seen serving Mercury and X-23 who were getting to know each other better. However, tragedy struck moments later when the Grind Stone was destroyed by an explosion, courtesy of the Facility who sought to capture the young Mercury.
(New X-Men lI#35 - BTS) - Local police, paramedics and firefighters arrived at the Grind Stone. However, it appeared that no one could have survived the total annihilation of the building.

When Luna appeared in New X-Men lI#33 she looked much older and was dressed more like a fifty's diner waitress but was called Luna nonetheless. It's a shame she was killed in the explosion, Craig Kyle sure had it out for all of Nunzio and Christina's characters. New X-Men, however, is a fantastic read.
