contraxian-colonists-jh3CONTRAXIAN COLONISTS

Classification: Semi-humanoid extraterrestrial race

Location/Base of Operations: Last seen on Contraxia, third planet from the sun in the Elidra star system, Milky Way Galaxy

Known Members: None identified;
    there appeared to be at least two-three different races/sub-species of colonists shown, although a "myriad" of races is described;
    the 2-3 races demonstrated (beyond the baseline Contraxians): broad-faced & green-skinned atmospheric helmet-wearers; tall, lean & green
atmospheric helmet-wearers; orange-skinned short colonists;

Affiliations: Baseline Contraxians, Jack of Hearts (Jonathan Hart)

Enemies: None, although their population threatened to overwhelm Contraxia

First Appearance: Jack of Hearts#2 (February, 1984)

Powers/Abilities: They did not demonstrate superhuman abilities in their limited appearances.

    Some wore atmospheric helmets, presumably indicating that they had difficulty or could not breathe Contraxia's air.

    Their specific breathing requirements are unrevealed; at least some appeared that they may be of an aquatic nature.

    Apparently none of the colonists were unable to tolerate extreme colds.contraxian-colonists-jh3-frozenworld

Traits: Little is known about their behavior, but they were willing and able to evacuate their colony worlds when the climate became to harsh/cold to survive.

    They were willing to live peacefully with the residents/natives of Contraxia and races from other colony worlds.

Type: Bilaterally symmetric bipeds, at least
Eyes
: Two (on head; colors not clearly seen, but likely vary amongst races/sub-species)
Fingers
: Unrevealed (may
vary amongst races/sub-species)
Toes: Unrevealed (may vary amongst races/sub-species)
Skin color: Green
Average height: Variable

History:
(
Jack of Hearts#2 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, the Contraxians colonized multiple worlds in their star system, at least.

(Jack of Hearts#2 (fb) - BTS) - Elidra, the star/sun of Contraxia and its colonies began cooling.

(Jack of Hearts#2 (fb)) - As the sun cooled, Contraxia's outermost colonies were abandoned.

(Jack of Hearts#2 (fb) - BTS / Jack of Hearts#3 (fb) - BTS) - Their innermost worlds became overpopulated by the myriad (see comments) of refugee races from the frozen outer worlds, and there were shortages of food and shelter.

    The colony worlds became frozen worlds.

(Jack of Hearts#4) - Jack of Hearts restored the cooling sun.

Comments: Created by Bill Mantlo and George Freeman.

    We don't know how many worlds have been colonized in the Contraxian system. There are enough different races/sub-species to exaggerate them as "myriad," apparently.

   Myriad means a countless or extremely great number (in the past, it specifically referred to a unit of 10,000). Obviously, using the term myriad in reference to the races from the Contraxian system that system that occupied Contraxia as their sun cooled is a bit of hyperbole.

    One might argue that "system" might refer to an empire rather than a solar system, but the fact that they were all affected by a single sun pretty much rules that out.

    I think it most likely that the colonists were genetically-engineered to survive on the alien worlds. While no real time scale was given, natural adaptation/evolution typically takes millions of years, although perhaps Contraxians could evolve/adapt more quickly.

    Jack of Heart's restoration of the sun may have allowed the colony races to return their previous planets.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Contraxian Colonists should be distinguished from:

broad-faced green colonists

contraxian-colonists-jh2-widegreen

contraxian-colonists-jh2-widegreen-prof

     Green-skinned and broad-faced, with vertical slit pupils (like a cat and some types of reptiles), the one representative appeared to wear an entire atmospheric suit on Contraxia.

     The one representative seen appeared to be roughly 5'10" tall.

--Jack of Hearts#2

Note: It is certainly possible that this guy was from the same sub-species as the tall & lean green colonist in the sub-profile below, but they were significantly different in appearance.

     This guy looked more reptilian to me.

tall & lean green colonists

Pale green-skinned, tall and lean, with a dark, fish-like eye,
the one representative to wore an entire atmospheric helmet (although perhaps the entire suit was used for atmospheric protection) on Contraxia.

     The one representative seen appeared to be roughly 6'6" tall.

Note: It is certainly possible that this guy was from the same sub-species as the broad-faced green colonist in the sub-profile above, but they were significantly different in appearance.

     This guy looked more piscine to me.

orange colonists

contraxian-colonists-jh3-orange     Orange-skinned and short (perhaps 3' tall), they could breathe without any sort of atmospheric suit, although only his face was exposed (Contraxia was still cold at this point).
