History:

(World of Suspense I#2/6 (fb)) - Jaime Cabo was a 26-year-old Spanish-American man who worked as a sponge fisherman, the same career as his father. One day Jaime went diving to collect sponges off the coast of Tampa when he saw a tiger shark swimming nearby. Realizing he could be in danger of death, Jaime moved into a cavern he found among the coral. Jaime was surprised to find that within the cave, he didn't feel the ocean's pressure and could swim more easily. Soon he found himself in a chamber with breathable air, so removed his helmet and suit.

As Jaime explored the cave further, it soon opened up into an entire underground city, centered around a large fountain. He discovered the people there wore costumes such those worn in Spain 400 years before and spoke Spanish. When he stepped forward to introduce himself the citizens became alarmed and fled. Stepping forward, Jaime took a drink from the town's fountain. The citizens who fled summoned guards who placed Jaime under confinement.

The guards brought Jaime to their leader, who proved to be the legendary Ponce de Leon. Ponce de Leon confirmed that he had found the legendary Fountain of Youth, which was what Jaime had drunk from. Jaime was pleased to hear this, believing he'd remain 26 years old forever and wanted to share the secret of the hidden town with others but Ponce de Leon refused to share his find, thinking the waters of the Fountain of Youth would soon be diminished if they were shared with the outside world. When Jaime suggested he could bottle the water and sell it outside of the city, Ponce de Leon accused him of being greedy and refused to let him leave the city.

Ponce de Leon's guards placed Jaime in a cell but while the townspeople were asleep, Jaime tunneled through the floor of his cell and escaped, determined to tell others what he'd found.

(World of Suspense I#2/6) - Returning to the surface in his diving suit, Jaime excitedly told the story of what had happened to him to his father and other sponge fishermen. He intended to guide them all to the location of Ponce de Leon's hidden city and claim eternal youth for them all; however, when the fishermen finally removed Jaime's diving helmet they saw he had aged rapidly into an old man; the eternal youth given by the Fountain of Youth evidently required its users to remain within its environment in order to maintain its effects.

Comments: Created by Carl Wessler and Steve Ditko.

The Fountain of Youth figures in a few other places, most notably Tyrannus' origin, La Hacienda, Kala's people, the one found by Jonathan Storm and the one found in Makesh.
