Powers/Abilities/Functions: The city of Makesh built from marble and pure stones, and featured beautiful gardens. Its greatest treasure was the fountain that stood in the city's center.
History: (Giant-Size Chillers II#1/5) - Makesh was founded "in the mists of pre-history," and its fountain granted them knowledge. Each resident would drink a little of the water each day, and obtain greater wisdom. Because the people of Makesh were so wise, there was no war or worry.
One citizen named Petere attempted to drink a large quantity of water at once, but the sudden rush of knowledge aged him into an old man and possibly killed him.

The Fountain of Makesh should not be confused with:
Petere was a young man who lived in Makesh, and scorned his fellows for drinking the waters at a slow and steady rate. Believing that he could have the wisdom of a god, Petere plunged himself into the waters and drank all that he could. Suddenly, he achieved so much wisdom that he was aged into an old man, and collapsed on the ground (possibly dying).

The Fountain stood in the center of Makesh, and its waters could impart wisdom to those who drank of it. Each citizen of Makesh would drink a little of its water each day, and slowly became the wisest people on Earth. When Petere attempted to fill himself with the fountain's waters, the increased knowledge aged him into an old man (possibly killing him in the process), because he could not handle so much wisdom at once.
