(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#2 (fb)) - During World War II, Sgt. Byrd was chosen to lead the "Crazy SUES" (Specialized Unit, Enhanced Soldiers), a specialized ranger unit attached to the 101st Air Assault Division--these "super-soldiers" were minor heroes under the command of Sgt. Byrd and Captain America, and they would be sent on combat operations deep behind enemy lines. Many of the SUES wore a standard-issue infantry uniform, but some continued to wear a mask, and they were armed with a standard military rifle.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#2 (fb)) - Sgt. Byrd greeted his new troops, telling them that they may each think that they are somebody but that they were now officially property of the US Army and that their "soft little hide(s) belonged to him. He continued, advising them that he himself was the only special person on this army base, and that he had the power to change their realities. He then introduced Captain America, who reviewed their mission statement.

    Later that night, Sgt. Byrd arrived to break up a fight starting between "Slow-Motion" Jones and Captain Strong.

(All-Winner Squad: Band of Heroes#2 (fb)) - On August 7, 1942, Sgt. Byrd, Captain America and the Crazy SUES were aboard a transport plane flying over the South Pacific. When the plane reached the jump-zone, Sgt. Byrd instructed the Crazy SUES to follow Captain America and Bucky as they parachuted down to Guadalcanal to take on the forces of the Imperial Japanese Army.

    As they landed amidst a hail of gunfire, Byrd told Captain America that he didn't know from where they had gotten their intel, but this mission had gone FUBAR in a hurry. At Captain America and Bucky's recommendation, Byrd told Jones to get up that hill and take out the machine gun next or he would kick Jones up there himself. Byrd then told the others to support Jones and then fired on Japanese troops. When Cortez failed to fire on the Japanese, Sgt. Byrd hurled a grenade at him, and Cortez absorbed the explosion and incinerated a group of Japanese.

    Later, when Captain America noted he wanted to put a more concerted effort into aerial reconnaissance and asked if they had any pilots, Byrd replied that the Brits had sent them over a couple of good ones and that they were looking into getting American Ace, who had been working with the Royal Air Force. At Captain America's query, Byrd told him that there had only been one casualty, Secret Stamp, who had broken his leg.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#3 (fb)) - On August 13th, 1942, Young Avenger and the Crazy SUES were still fighting the Japanese at Guadalcanal. Byrd told Merzah to get the men across the rise and smoke the enemy out out of the trenches on the other side. Byrd explained that he wanted them in support of Cortez, Drew and Johnson.byrd-sgt-cs-modern

    Johnson apparently perished when Cortez was unable to stop himself from unleashing a massive fireball.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#4 (fb)) - As the Crazy Sues continued to battle the Japanese, Vagabond was killed in action.

    The Crazy SUES were soon after aboard a transport plane headed to Europe. After reaching the jump-zone, Byrd prepared them to parachute down near the Normandy village of Sainte Mere Eglise where they would try to get rid of the Germans who had infested the town. While Captain America would be leading a group onto the nearby beaches, the SUES objective was to distract the enemy and make a push to secure the village.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#4 (fb)) - The SUES met with the Invaders.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#5 (fb)) - On July 7, 1944, Sgt. Byrd outlined the plans for battle tactics to the Crazy SUES in a barn on a farm near Bretteville-sur-Laise, France. Byrd subsequently sent the Bryon (the Young Avenger) to take the Victory Boys ahead and get the lay of the land. He further instructed Bryon to make sure the Victory Boys did not fire on the Germans until he gave the word.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#5 (fb) - BTS) - The Crazy SUES participated in the liberation of France. On August 29th, 1944 they celebrated.

   Shortly afterward in a small town in Belgium, Captain America, Bucky, Sgt. Byrd, and the Crazy SUES were clearing the town of Nazis. Moon-Man was shot by a sniper, and the Nazis suddenly attacked in force; Young Avenger and the other Crazy SUES were pinned down by enemy fire until Captain Flame eventually repelled the attack after "Slow Motion" Jones forced him into action.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#1 (fb)) <December 6, 1944> - Sgt. Byrd was in Saarlautern, Germany with the Crazy SUES, Captain America, Bucky, and the Victory Boys. As a panzer and other Nazi forces approached, Captain America advised Sgt. Byrd that the explosion they just heard could not have come from a panzer and sounded more like "twenty-mil fire." Byrd instructed ("Flash") Foster to check out the street "for Slo-Mo's detail" (presumably meaning to ensure that it was safe for "Slow-Motion" Jones to do reconnaissance); however, Foster told Byrd that he could not do that due to "angry krauts shooting at my head." Byrd subsequently appreciated that Cortez was walking aimlessly in the street by the panzer, and he told the "dumb ape" that he needed to get under cover. When Cortez failed to respond, Byrd referred to him by his codename, "Captain Flame," but it wasn't until the panzer directly threatened Cortez that he used his powers to destroy the panzer.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#1 (fb) - BTS) - One of the Victory Boys--Piotr--was gravely wounded; and the Young Avenger fatally shot him in the head to end his suffering.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes#3) - Pushed in his wheelchair by Captain America, Sgt. Byrd attended the funeral of Bill Bryon, aka the Young Avenger. Another elderly attendee commented to Byrd, "Another day above ground, eh , Sar'nt Byrd?"

    And unfortunately, that's all there was to it--All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes was supposed to be an 8-issue mini-series, but it was canceled with the fifth issue due to low sales, and the story was never completed, so we never learned the final fate of the Crazy SUES.

    Sgt. Byrd was named in honor of the Appendix's own Ronald Byrd, who identified numerous characters for Paul Jenkins to use in this series.

    If Sgt. Byrd were thirty-years-old in 1945, he would have been 96 at the time this series was published, but the sliding timescale advances his age forward every year, so he would have been 111 at the time of publication of this profile...and a year old every year. As a normal man, it would seem exceedingly unlikely that he would still be alive in the modern/heroic age, although he certainly may have been exposed to the blood of a number of superhumans, which could have slowed his aging somewhat.

    This profile was completed 05/12/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event to represent the Crazy SUES
